This is a photograph of Councillor William Godfrey Robinson who represented East Riding in the Orbost Shire Council 1938 - 1947. William Godfrey Robinson was a Charter member of the Orbost Rotary Club and was the secretary of Orbost agricultural society in 1931.This item is associated with the Orbost Shire Council. Came into donor's possession some time ago. When the band was due to sale for the UK , the treasurer absconded with all the monies and the tour was cancelled. Hence the unused letter. Subsequently, William Partington conducted bands Australia- wide. He played the euphonium excellently. Donor is the niece of William Partington Letter from Dame Nellie Melba whilst in Sydney to Sir Daniel Godfrey, Bandmaster in England. This was to introduce the donor's uncle , William Partington, who was conductor of the Australian Imperial Band. Letter handwritten in black ink on cream peper. Address and telephone numbers printed at the top of the letter. Armitstead's woodyard was on the site later occupied by the Chandler Room of the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. Stephen Godfrey Armitstead started the woodyard in 1921, taking over from Long's woodyard. Taken over by Stephen's son, Leo Godfrey, it closed in the 1970s. After Leo's death it was managed by Hec Whitworth. The Armitstead family lived at 79 Croydon Road. 1931 electoral roll: Catherine Isobella, Ellen Florence, Leo Godfrey (woodworker), Stephen Godfrey (wood merchant) and William Ginchrist (joiner) at this address. Leo later lived at 75 Croydon Road. Geoffrey Armitstead, grandson of Stephen, visited the site in 2002 whilst in Melbourne from Brisbane. He recalled that during his summer school holidays that he delivered ice to household icechests. His cousin Marcia Davis, daughter of Ellen Armitstead, accompanied him and provided the family photos for copying and related her knowledge of the family history. The weighbridge and scales were moved in 2023 from their original position when the forecourt of the Neighbourhood Centre was upgraded by Council. William Scott Purves Godfrey (1872-1953) designed the chairs and Miss Gladys Hawkey (1886-1974) carved them. W.S.P Godfrey was born in Toorak on 6 April 1872. He was was the cousin of Ethel Godfrey. Educated in Brussels and at Melbourne Grammar, he studied Architecture at the University of Melbourne. He and Henry Howard Spowers established the architectural firm Godfrey & Spowers, known for the design of the Argus building, around 1901. W S P Godfrey retired from practice in 1944. He died in August 1953, aged 81. He's buired in the St Kilda Cemetery with the Godfrey family. Gladys Hawkey was a member of the Guild. (photographed during the Norla Fete). She was born in Sandhurst, Bendigo and is buired in the Bendigo Cemetery. Little is known about Gladys Hawkey. She may have been a student of Robert Prenzel. Another mention of her work is made in an article in 1915 where her escritoire is offered in a raffle to raise funds for the Australian sick and Wounded. The chairs were donated in 1919 when the Flinders Street mission was open. In a style of Robert Prenzel with Australian Flora, the chairs are in the typical Arts and Crafts style. The original artwork painted by William Yates Holt Titcomb (1858-1930), an English artist specialist in religious subjects, is located in Clifton College Chapel, Bristol, England (visible in their virtual tour online). A Union Jack flag is being used as an improvised altar cloth. A priest or chaplain in a surplice, also a soldier , administers the sacrament to the reverent congregation. For Trafalgar Day, 20 October 1914, the Archbishop of Canterbury in England had "drawn up a new form of private prayer to be offered up specially for the sailors of the Fleets in the present crisis. He suggested its use particularly at noon as a silent prayer, when those at work may be reminded by the ringing of the " Angelus" bell to lift up their hearts to the Lord. The prayer was as follow: "O Thou that slumberest not nor sleepest, protect, we pray Thee, our sailors from the hidden perils of the sea, from the snares and assaults of the enemy. In the anxious hours of waiting, steady and support those on whom the burdens of responsibility lies heavily, and grant that in dangers often, watching often, in weariness often, they may serve Thee with a quiet mind, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” The prayer illustrated by English artist G.M. Langley became popular. Prints were sold as gift for 7/9 each with an oak frame. As mentioned in the ' Quarterly Jottings from our log" no 47 midwinter 1917: the etching was gifted to the Mission for display in the new Chapel by the Godfrey sisters. The frame was gifted by their cousin's wife, Mrs William Scott Purves Godfrey ( ' Quarterly Jottings from our log" no 48 Michaelmas 1917).The print was gifted by the Misses Godfrey, influential and long term members and supporters of the Ladies Harbour Light Guild. At the time of the completion of the St Peter's Chapel in September 1917, it was dedicated to the memory of all merchant seamen serving in the long war. The print subject, of the sailor guarded by Jesus was no doubt intended to inspire faith and hope but also acknowledges and reflects the anxious days of waiting not only of the sailors and seafarers negotiating the dangerous waters and oceans but also the challenge for families, experiencing the widespread anxieties of a world at war. Spring bound photographic record of the former Lyric Theatre, 19 High Street (Charing Cross), Bendigo, by Bruce Trethowan, B.arch, FRAIA, dated June, 2005. A letter in the front of the document mentions as part of the Bendigo Bank Development, it was necessary to demolish the former Lyric Theatre. Before doing so, the Bank commissioned a heritage architect to produce a photographic record of the building. It is addressed to Mr Jim Evans, President, Bendigo Historical Society and dated 10 August 2005. The beginning has the Historical Background, Building Description and three pages of Plans and Elevations.
