The first official luncheon was held on 3rd June 1953 at the Sunshine Town Hall and was attended by representatives from Melbourne, Footscray and Essendon Clubs. After the membership reached 25 the Lions Club of Sunshine was Chartered on 21st July 1953, and became the 5th Club in Victoria and the 17th in Australia. Over the years the club raised funds through various activities to provide charitable donations to organisations, people, and disaster areas, as well as to purchase house and land for a Senior Citizens Club. It became necessary to sell the house and land years later. The Lions Club also contributed to the Sunshine Swimming Pool which was opened in December 1960, and was welcomed by the children of Sunshine. Some of the activities to raise funds included Guy Fawkes bonfire nights, rodeos, paper and bottle drives, jumble sales,Tivoli Gala Nights, car raffles, and sausage sizzles. Over the past 10 years the Sunshine Lions have put in thousands of hours of work, and have disbursed in excess of $200,000 for charitable purposes. As well as supporting overseas projects and natural disasters, the Lions have continued their community work. Funds have been donated to care providers such as the Mercy Hospice and Scope, and also used to provide Christmas hampers and dinners, and for underprivileged children to have holidays. Some of the organisations that have recently received funds were Helping Hands Across the Pacific, Gellibrand Services, Royal District Nursing Service, and the Sunshine Mission. During 1960/61 the club membership reached a record 58, however at the time of the 60th Anniversary dinner the membership was 17, three of which were in their seventies and 3 in their eighties. The above brief historical information was sourced from the 60th Anniversary Dinner booklet. This booklet is significant because it contains an 11 page summarised historical record of the 60 years of activities of the Lions Club of Sunshine. The original clubhouse located at 24 Talmage Street Albion, was a former private residence of David Buchan Ferguson, the Managing Director of the Sunshine Harvester Works / H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. The house was converted into a club room, bar, kitchen and billiard room with a lawn bowls green being established in the early 1960s. In 1975 the rear of the residence was demolished and replaced with new club rooms, bar, kitchen, toilets and change facilities. Club access was restricted to members and guests only. Then in April 1968 the club was registered as The Sunshine City Club, and in the 1980s members formed a Darts Club and a Social Golf Club. Also, in this period the club was given the opportunity to purchase Number 22 Talmage Street which enabled the club to extend its car parking area. The early 1980s saw the introduction of ladies as members and they formed a Ladies Bowls Club and entered into the VLBA Pennant Competition; this required some more upgrading of the clubrooms and the installation of proper ladies' facilities. Also, the kitchen was refitted out with new equipment, club flat was renovated into a dining / function room and bar, and the number 2 bowls green was constructed which required the club to place Number 22 and 24 Talmage Street Albion onto the one title. The mid 1980s saw the introduction of Legalised Gaming Machines into Victoria and the club made an application and was granted a Gaming Venue License in 1997.5649 - Talmage St Albion - Sunshine Business Man's Club House.jpgtalmage street, albion, sunshine businessmen's club, eugene thomas "kinder" smith, oscar mckay, clarence gibson carlton, albert edward bolt, william dinnell, david buchan ferguson -

Members enjoyed lawn tennis courts, a bowling green and a cricket green, as well as a large billiard room. ...In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. In the mid 1870s wealthy solicitor David Abbot bought a large block on the corner of Bamfield Street and Beach Road and built an imposing family home with a stately tower. It featured rare Hawthorn Blacks – hand-made bricks of brown-red with streaks of charcoal black. For many years the home was the most prominent in the district. In 1922 ‘Coggeshall’ was subdivided, and the house was sold to the Sandringham Club, a gentleman’s club that had formed in 1913 and required more space for its growing membership. (Pg 162 Historica, 2011) Alcock, Thomson & Taylor. 1. Full size billiard table made of dark wood with eight turned legs. Green ...The Billiard Room and South wing were completed in 1914, built by recommendation of the Lesee John Newton and the Government Tourist Officer and Supervising officer of the Government Chalet, James Boyce... "Boyce was present at the Chalet on 14 March to witness the completion of the new wing's foundations ...when he returned in June he found the wing approaching completion and that '... the billiard table was expected to reach the Chalet during the week'. The table possibly came second-hand from the Oriental Hotel, Bright. When visiting in March, Boyce had heard from a Mr Tewksbury 'that he is disposing of those at the Oriental Hotel so that if the Public Works Department is going to provide the table for the Chalet it might be possible to pick one up cheap from the Hotel'. It's reasonable that the Chalet did acquire one of the second-hand tables in 1914 and, and changed over to a new model in the 1930s. Three billiard tables remain in the Chalet Billiard Room today; one full sized table and two smaller tables, one perhaps a pool table. The full-sized table was made by the well-known billiard table manufacturers Alcock, Thomson & Taylor, who adopted this name when they merged their billiard businesses in January 1930. Henry Upton Alcock had initially established the business in Fitzroy in the mid-1850's and the table at the Chalet resembles the 'Squatter's Favourite' model that Alcock first produced in the nineteenth century from Australian timbers. this style of table was installed in Melbourne's Parliament buildings, several prestigious clubs as well as hotels and houses."(Pg 13-14. As he ran the eight miles through the streets of Sunshine, Tottenham and Footscray, he was cheered on and waved at by pedestrians and jeered at only twice! In 2019, the City of Melbourne Council installed this historic 1973 photo of Gordon in the “Yes” room in the Melbourne Town Hall for his historic role in campaigning for LGBTI acceptance. Gordon William Doak LGBTQIA+ Glengala Road Sunshine West St. Marks Amateur Athletic Club ...Gordon William Doak, was one of Sunshine's early known gay activist. He was a linesman, a builder and a Glengala Road Sunshine West resident. He built his two-story home himself including a gymnasium. Soon after his 1973 'coming out', he sold up and purchased a property in Moor St, Fitzroy, digging underground and setting up his own personal gym under the house for himself and his friends, Most people remember, even decades later, was the arrival of Gordon Doak at the Gay demonstration in the City Square, Melbourne. He decided, on hearing about the demonstration, that he wanted to be there. But not for him anything as mundane as catching a train. Rather he decided to run in to the city, and to carry a banner that he made for himself – 2 foot square, black letters on green canvas that read 'I am proud of my homosexuality. Please change the repression against homosexuals and let us live in peace'.
