Emerald Museum & Nobelius Heritage ParkDomestic object - Serving Spoon ("Grosvenor"), G. & E. Rodd, c. 1920-50s
... 37 Greeves Street, St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ...George Rodd and his brother Ernest established G. & E. Rodd as a manufacturer of silver goods in the 1920s. Initially, they produced popular small accessories such as collar pins and bangles before expanding in the mid-1920s to create more complex items such as rings, broaches, and cufflinks. In the 1930s, they began to produce ornate silverware, predominantly flatware which capitalised on the High Tea elegance of the time, and children's silverware. Much of their silverware was EPNS—or electroplated nickel silver—and identified with various embossed markings. They steadily expanded over the next decades, with a slight dip in production during WWII, and merged with Platers Pty Ltd. in 1949, gaining them access to the 'Hecworth' name. This plain serving spoon is larger than most everyday utensils as it was likely used to serve smaller portions of a communal meal. The spoon's bowl is worn away at the top-left edge, indicating that it may have been used as leverage to frequently to open sealed jars or tins. It is also missing several of the markers which would easily identify it as Rodd silverware, such as the APEX mark, or an A1 label. This item is significant as it is an example of a well-loved and regularly-used utensil from an everyday home. Its wear is indicative of the way it was used on a regular basis, and how similar utensils may have been used in other homes around the area. This silver spoon has a deep, slightly misshapen bowl that is tarnished by a great deal of scratches and marks. The bowl's edges are also slightly bent and warped. The handle extends slightly over the bottom of the bowl, narrowing at the neck before widening at the base of the handle. There is a small engraving on its underside.Rear, base of handle: "GROSVENOR PLATE EPNS" Rear, base of handle, sideways: "A"20th century, domestic life -

Like all working people these immigrants experienced sickness, accidents, unemployment, death and burial. They needed help of like fellows to tide their families over these times. So they formed a branch of one of the Friendly Societies back in the mother country. The idea was to make fixed contributions to a fund and when they were off work they would receive a payment. When they died funeral benefits would be paid and the widow and children would be cared for. It was a form of local insurance for hard times. Designed by Benjamin Backhouse of Geelong, the foundation stone was laid on 27 March 1860 by Mrs Celia Scott of Mount Boninyong, the oldest resident in the district. The cost of the building was £900 and when fitted out the cost was £1,265. The first service in the new church was held on 26 August 1860, and a bell founded by Greeves of London in 1849 was hung in the steeple. (Possibly this bell came from the old church on the hill.) The local builder Richard Rennie built the church of brick and slate. In the 1950s the brick was covered with roughcast and plaster. The church boasts some fine stained glass windows. At the north end is a window placed in 1891 by James Richmond in memory of Mr and Mrs Thomas Scott. Manufactured in Edinburgh by Ballantine and Sons, the window represents the friendship of Jonathon and David, and includes portraits of the Scotts. Side windows in memory of Rev. Thomas Hastie, and Mr and Mrs Robert Scott were unveiled on Good Friday, 13 April 1900, representing the sower and the reaper, again with portraits of those commemorated. These windows were made by the Melbourne firm of Yencken & Co., designed by a Mr. Harness; the Hastie window was presented by the congregation, the Scott windows by the Scott family. In 1982 a window was placed in memory of pastor Stuart Davies, a Lay Preacher at the church for over 50 years. It depicts 'Christ, the Light of the World'. In 1977, the majority of the congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Australia chose to join the Uniting Church in Australia. Some congregations, however, did not.
