Newspaper article titled 'Volcano' gives the Mines Department Problem. Bendigo Advertiser dated Friday, May 12, 1967. Mine was still burning and the ground had subsided four feet more. It would be a matter of waiting until the smoke diminished and how far the ground was going to subside. Until then it would be useless to do anything. Sawdust had been dumped in the shaft, on top of the concrete slab. Bendigo Advertiser Thursday, May 11, 1967 article of an old mine shaft burning on the corner of Pitt and Old Violet Street. It was filled to a depth of about 20 feet with sawdust and rubbish and caught alight on Anzac night when a bonfire got out of control and was still burning on May 10. Some attempts has been made to put it out but had failed. There was concern for children playing in the area. Newspaper article titled 'Violet St. Mine 'Boils' Again. A child walking near the shaft saw the ground collapse and shortly afterwards smoke drifting up. He told his parents who called the Bendigo Police. The area around the mouth of the saft was covered in cracks and seemed likely to collapse. Earlier a nearby resident had placed old iron and metal sheets over the area so that children would not walk on it. Once again children were attracted to it. Handwritten copy of a newspaper report on an explosion at the New Chum Consolidated Mine. The explosion occurred about 7.30 am on Friday 21/1/1881 when a fire broke out in the engine house. Some dynamite and caps had been placed in the engine house for convenience sake. Seven men were injured. They were T.
