Emmanuel College is the result of the amalgamation of St Ann's girls' college and Christian Brothers' College boys' school in 1991. Mother Philomene Maguire arrived in Warrnambool and commenced a Convent of Mercy and school with the consent of the then Bishop of Victoria, Bishop Goold. The school opened in Wyton House in Botanic Road. Brother Egan arrived in 1902 and set up a Brothers' group and school and 104 boys enrolled. Since its inception in 1991 Emmanuel College provides a broad education for students to Year 12 level. A number of students have achieved a high profile in the community, including footballer Jonathan Brown, television personality Dave Hughes, educatior Professor Colin Ferguson, musician Shane Howard, Olympic cyclist Michelle Ferris.This booklet briefly documents the history of Emmanuel College and its predecessors St Ann's and CBC and includes a list of their more prominent and well-known 'inspiring alumni'. This medal is one of only a few medals donated by a group of generous gentlemen as tokens of their appreciation of the talent and industry of high achieving students in the years 1869 - 1870. The medal was awarded to Charles J Henderson when he completed his Matriculation Examination at the very young age of 13 years. The 1869 College annual report states that this examination, which granted entry into Melbourne University, was held in Ballarat for the first time in 1869. Candidates had to pass in at least six of the nine possible subjects in order to pass. Charles Henderson (born 3/02/1856) was the eldest son of the Rev. William Henderson of St Anderw's Kirk, Ballarat, distinguished founder of Ballarat College. Charles was only the third student enrolled at Ballarat College in July 1864. The Ballarat College annual report 1869 states the medal was awarded in appreciation of his 'success in passing so creditably the Matriculation examination at the age of thirteen years'. This medal has historic significance because it dates from the first decade of the history of the College. It has social significance because the recipient was the third student enrolled at Ballarat College, the eldest son of the founder of the College. The medal is unique and is one of only a few privately donated between 1869-1870 by a group of gentlemen affiliated with the college.This gold-plated round-shaped medal has front embossed with Minerva head, name of school and school motto. The rear of the medal is inscribed with names of medal donors. There is a straight metal pin hinged to the right side of the rear of the medal. There is a small catch attached to left side of the rear of the medal. The side edge of the medal is inscribed with name of the recipient and title of the award. The medal is housed in a rectangular cardboard box and nestled in cotton wool.The box has a blue lid and white base.Embossed around inner edge of medal front "Studiis Claritudo Venit. This book was awarded to Ewen Wanliss in 1891 for first prize for Greek in the VI form. Ewen enrolled at Ballarat College in 1888 at the age of 15 along with his brothers David, Cecil, Newton, Sydney and Neville. Ewen's father was Hon. T. D. Wanliss and his previous school was Toorak College IV class. The Wanliss family grew up in Wanliss House Sturt St, which was bought by the school in 1910. The house remained on the property until 1996. "Ewen Wanliss was born on 24th September 1873 and died in 1966. He was educated at Ballarat College, enrolled in1888, and was Captain of the College 1st XI and 1st XVIII in 1892. He served as 327 Pte E Wanliss, 4th (Imperial) Contingent, and as a Lieutenant (20th August 1900) with the 4th Imperial Bushmen in the South African War." (In the Footsteps of Pompey p. 14).Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown calf with gilt bordering on front and back cover and the college crest embossed on front cover.
