The game was played across paddocks from Trafalgar Street, Mont Albert to Whitehorse Road and down Victoria Crescent to where Box Hill TAFE is now located in Elgar Road. There were problems with cows eating the tee flags! This is a book giving information on the streets of Colac and the origins of the names. Colac is a city 150 kilometres south west of Melbourne and is a commercial centre for a major agricultural area. It is situated near the 3rd largest volcanic plain in the world and European settlement began in 1837. The book was commenced by Ian McIntosh in the 1970s and in 2005 the Colac and District Historical Society took on the project again with the major editors being Ida and Andrew McIntosh. This book is of interest, particularly those in the Western District of Victoria, as it contains information on Colac streets, many of which were named after pioneers of the district. The book will be useful for research. This is a soft cover book of 60 pages. The cover has a blue background and features a colour photograph (mainly in green, blue and white tonings) of a panorama of the Colac district. The photograph extends over the front and back covers. The book contains the names and name origins of Colac streets in alphabetical order and many black and white photographs. The pages have a glued binding. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh nearby districts between September and November 1883. The Royal Hotel was built in 1861 and is located on the corner of Main and Young Streets in Bacchus Marsh. The first owner was James Murray and the hotel was first known as the Murray Family Hotel. James Murray died in an accident in 1863 and sometime after this the ownership passed to Richard Manning. From around 1869 it became known as the Royal Hotel. Richard Manning's son Frederick Manning inherited the hotel in 1896. The Manning family owned the hotel until sometime after 1945. In more recent decades it has been owned and operated by a number of different people. The hotel continues to operate as of 2024. This image shows the building in its original structure. In 1888, five years after this image was taken, a second storey was added to the section on Young Street. In this image this section is the single storey section of wall without windows to the right of the picture. The image shows the Royal Hotel seen from the intersection of Main and Young Streets. The diagonal view shows both the Main Street and Young Street sides of the building. It is a two storey brick building with a single storey brick extension on the Young Street frontage. Standing at the corner of the building is a woman and five girls. A deep gutter runs along the Main Street, with a pedestrian crossing ramp. Over this crossing point, there is a large metal frame bearing an ornate lantern. Next to it is a water trough for horses. 17 Fellows Street Kew was originally owned and occupied by the architect Henry Kemp. Kemp had arrived in Australia in 1886 and this was therefore one of the first of the many buildings he was to design in Melbourne. While late Victorian in date, the house is an interesting precursor of the Edwardian architecture produced by Kemp. Somewhat awkwardly composed with steep gables, a rectangular castellated tower and slated single storeyed verandahs projecting from the overall box-like form, the house contains features common to the 1880s such as the use of polychromy in the brickwork and slates cladding the roof. (Sanderson 1988). The historian Dorothy Rogers established that at one stage it was the home of Dr John Dale - Chief Medical Officer of the City of Melbourne. This photograph predates later renovations to the rear of the property.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. This is a book providing information on the streets of Hamilton, Victoria and the origin of the names. Hamilton is a city in Western Victoria at the intersection of the Glenelg Highway and the Henty Highway. European settlement began with the arrival of pastoralists following the 1836 explorations of Major Thomas Mitchell. The Wedge family in 1839 had the property ‘The Grange’ which covered the site of Hamilton today. The town was gazetted in 1851 and named after a place in Scotland. Hamilton Victoria is the centre of a sheep-grazing and agricultural district. The book won an award in the 2008 Victorian Community History Awards. This book is of interest as it gives information on the Hamilton streets and the origin of their names. The history of Hamilton is of particular interest to those also living in the Western District. The book will be a useful research tool. This is a soft cover book of 174 pages. The back cover has a white background with black and white photographs of five local Hamilton people. The front cover has a yellow and brown background with black and white photographs of five local Hamilton people, an outline of a map of Victoria and a photograph of a map of the Hamilton area with some artefacts placed on the map. The book contains an Introduction, a Preface, a Foreword, an Early Days Overview, a list of Contents, a list of the streets in alphabetical order with information on the origin of the names, two Appendices and an Index. The book has many black and white photographs and sketches. The Melbourne suburb of Kew gained independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860, being declared a Municipality in that year. Kew became a Borough in 1863, a Town in 1910, and a City in 1921. The former City of Kew became part of a newly declared City of Boroondara in 1994. This very fragile document records the following information about streets in Kew - Name, Total Width, Width of Carriageway, Description, Government Gazetted - Year & Page.While the name of a street was formally acknowledged and published in the Victorian Government Gazettes, this document, compiled by a public officer, probably in the Town Clerk's Department, is the earliest known local record listing street names in the Borough, later Town, then City of Kew. The front page indicates that in 1865, the responsibility for an initial 36 streets in Kew was taken over by Council. The final annotation in the document was made in 1937. The document is an important record for researchers seeking to understand the dating of streets in the district.27-page document compiled by officers of the Borough, Town and City of Kew, listing the names of streets taken over by Council, and providing details of their proportions and gazettiing. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999.
