AT a Public Meeting convened by the Wodonga Shire President on 22nd February 1955 a committee was formed by the very large gathering present "to build a Swimming and Wading Pool in Wodonga to 165' x 60' size to Public Works Specifications." This committee was named the Wodonga Swimming Pool Construction Committee. After four years of hard work and voluntary labour members of this Committee officially handed over the project on behalf of the public of Wodonga to the Construction Authority, the Wodonga Shire Council. The concrete pool structures were built by Contractor Mr. R. Baring, but a great deal of the work in excavating and generally preparing the area was carried out by voluntary labour. All 30,000 foam cement bricks used in the buildings were made by working bees, a large portion of the materials required were donated and most of the cartage of these materials was voluntary as well as £6,000 being raised in appeals. The Stanley Street Pool in Wodonga officially closed on 7th April 2012 and was demolished the following year.This item is significant because it records the Official Opening of the first swimming pool in Stanley Street Wodonga which was built by volunteers for the community.A programme produced for the Official Opening of the Wodonga Swimming Pool on 12th December 1959. Mt Beauty's Swimming Pool was built by Alpine Shire and included a Squash Court. October 1986. Previously the community swam in the West and East Kiewa Rivers. Mrs Barbara Emery, born in Beechworth in 1914 was one of the original members of the Wodonga community who formed a Committee and lobbied for the building of a swimming pool in Wodonga. This was prompted after many near misses and a drowning at the popular swimming spot in Wodonga Creek. She and her husband Bob, along with other Committee members lobbied the Wodonga Council and were finally able to negotiate land which fronted onto Stanley Street, Wodonga. Members of the Committee worked tirelessly to fund raise and also to build the pool itself. Countless working bees were organised to complete the construction and surrounds. The pool opened on 12th December 1959. Mr Bob Emery became the manager and Grace ran the kiosk for many years. Later reflecting on her life in the Wodonga community Mrs Emery stated, “To get the pool was a highlight in my life, the satisfaction that we could save lives.” After years of heated discussion about the future of the Stanley Street pool and the construction of a new pool, it finally closed on 31 March 2012. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. Sassella Park itself was established in 1929 as a major sports ground for the district In 1972, the pool was ordered to close due to major leaks in the structure. The closure sparked significant community protest, with strong support from local residents and several councillors who wanted a new pool built on the same site. Despite the campaign, the government instead built a new pool at Taylors Road, Keilor Downs, not Deer Park. Eltham swimming pool was opened in December 1936. It was located adjacent to Central Park. The small children's pool in the foreground was opened in November 1938. This glass plate negative was used to manufacture postcards (1:1 printing) for commercial sale by the Rose Sterograph Company and its subsidiaries. George Rose founded the Rose Stereograph Company in 1880 and was joined by Herbert (Bert) Cutts in the early 20th Century. The pair formed a lifetime working partnership and strong personal friendship. Assisted by George’s two sons, Herbert George and Walter, and later by Neil Cutts, the Rose Stereograph Company continued its operations for more than 140 years. The company was initially built on stereographs, but as cinema took over and stereographs fell out of fashion, the Rose Stereograph Company developed Australia’s first commercially viable photographic postcard business. Specialising in postcards of iconic historical moments and significant landmarks, The Rose Stereograph Company became a staple of the Australian travel industry.This remarkable collection of glass plate negatives, transparencies, and postcards – arguably Australia’s most significant photography collection outside of public hands – has been passed down through the generations, surviving war, relocation, and the harsh Victorian climate. The Mt Beauty swimming pool was first constructed in the early 1960s and opened on 7th January 1964. Currently the main pool is 'partially' heated and the area has a splash area for the children. Details of the time line and people involved are given on the typed sheets. See. "Below Bogong - A History of Mount Beauty" compiled by Di Edmondson. Chapter 9, Pages 295-296. The detail on the typed sheets gives in details the steps taken by the community to achieve the completion of the swimming pool. An example of the effort the community put in to achieve the construction of the town's swimming pool. This activity is of historic and social significance and can be compared with activities of today especially as Mt Beauty was built as a construction town for the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and is now a small town with the added influence of tourism. McGuire's Baths and Swimming Pool were constructed by Mr. P. McGuire 'opposite View Point and Royal Hotels' in Sandhurst. Mr. McGuire had permission to erect a building which contained twelve baths, together with ladies' and gentlemen's dressing rooms. The baths opened for business from 25th December, 1855. The establishment had a good supply of water. The water, 'after being used once', was 'passed into the Creek (Bendigo Creek)'. (Bendigo Advertiser, 25th December, '1855 'Baths, Baths, Baths' ) In November 1855 during the construction of the Baths a fire broke out, possibly started by a lighted cigar being left on wood shavings. The fire was extinguished by 'manual exertions'. There was a 'plenteous supply of water adjacent which contributed to the speedy extinguishing of the flames' In December 1863, a meeting was advertised to be held at McGuire's Baths for the purpose of establishing a swimming club (Bendigo Advertiser, 9th. December, 1863) By 1866, Mr. Matthew Moran now proprietor of the Baths since 1864, writes in a letter to the Bendigo Advertiser that 'we can now boast of the largest freshwater swimming baths in these colonies' and that 'any man can have a swim, a shower-bath and towel every day for the low charge of twopence three farthings'. Further 'we can boast of every king of baths except vapour or Turkish are very little wanted on Sandhurst, as the inhabitants are generally a very steady well conducted people'.
