Around 1998 to 1999, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) developed an Arthritis Self Management Course. Course leaders were trained to deliver the program, which utilised Kate Lorig and James F Fries' landmark self-help book, "The Arthritis Helpbook".
