Lightstations Flying Doctor first aid kit. Medical first aid box kept at Lightstation. According to a Lighthouse keeper each item was numbered to ensure correct administration of medications by Lightstation staff via radio contact with The Flying Doctor Service. The lightstation’s first aid case is a red painted metal box. The hinged lid is stencilled with white words of caution such as ‘handle with care and ‘this side up’. Inside are four tray inserts of different sizes. Until recent years the contents of the kit, including medications and an instruction book, were intact but have since been lost and cannot be located. Of the six lightstations investigated by this assessment project, it would seem that the case, which possibly dates to the early 1900s, is unique in its survival at Gabo Island. The cabinet has first level contributory significance for its historic value and provenance to the lightstation. The cabinet has first level contributory significance for its historic value and provenance to the lightstation.Red painted metal box with hinged lid. This box of pastels was donated to the Wodonga & District Historical Society by Betty L. Barberis (nee Barton), a prominent artist. They were given to her by Mr Colin Findlay, the teacher at Upper Gundowring Primary School from 1930 to 1939. His students at that school and many others used these pastels each day. Reeves’ “Greyhound” business was originally established by William Reeves who opened his first shop near St Paul’s Cathedral in London, England in 1766. The greyhound crest was later adopted as their emblem, taken from the coat-of-arms of the extinct Ryves family of Dorset. It consisted of a black-seated greyhound spotted with gold. After William’s death, the business was carried out by his brother, in partnership with various businessmen. They sold a wide range of art supplies in England and their trade extended to supplying drawing instruments and stationery products to the East India Company in the early 1800s. In the 1920s the Greyhound Colour Works at Enfield became known especially for its famous Greyhound pastels. Reeves Greyhound products were also being made in Melbourne, Australia. They were marketed widely through schools in all States from the 1920s onwards. Reeves continues to be a huge brand both in the United Kingdom and internationally, placed in over 70 countries worldwide including America, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Africa and Australia. These pastels are significant because they were widely used in Victorian Schools and were donated to our Collection by a prominent local artist.A cardboard box with a corrugated cardboard to store 12 pastels. Shaving soap scuttles are distinguished from shaving mugs by having a separate area for hot water. The hot water is for dipping a shaving brush into to make a lather with the soap which is then applied to the skin before using the razor. Vintage scuttles are often elaborately decorated. Between 1880 and 1920 is the original time period for the occupational shaving mug. Most men owned a shaving mug, either at home or at a barber shop. Mugs purchased for home use typically were purchased through local stores, had more variety in style but usually went without a name. Barber shops sold mugs with the owners’ names on them partly because they thought that shaving rash came from sharing the same soap. In reality, the rash was not a result of soap but of unsterilized razors. Transfer ; The Duryea Motor Wagon was among the first standardized automobiles and among the first powered by gasoline. The muffineer set was presented in a custom made box bearing the manufacturer's mark 'Nanking Store', active in Shanghai, China from the late 19th century until early 20th century. Each item in the set is stamped with the makers mark and character of a rooster. It is unknown as to the symbolism of the rooster, however, it may have represented the Chinese year of the rooster. It is possible this is a Chinese export silver piece, as a result of increased export trade to the West in the early 20th century. Chinese export silver were made in foreign taste for export, in particular common items such as tea and coffee sets. This is an ash tray sold to tourists as a souvenir of a visit to Warrnambool. It would have been relatively cheap to buy. Souvenirs such as this were mass-produced for the tourist market and a relevant photograph inserted on the base to suit the town or settlement where they were sold. As cigarette-smoking is no longer so socially acceptable, items such as this one are no longer sold as tourist souvenirs. This item is of interest as an example of the type of souvenir sold to tourists in Australia in the first half of the 20th century, probably in the 1940s or 1950s. It is of particular local interest because it contains a photograph of Warrnambool during that time. This is a souvenir tin ash tray circular in shape. It has a colour photograph of Warrnambool inserted into the base of the dish (Flagstaff Hill showing part of the fortifications, the Lower Lighthouse, a camping ground and Warrnambool Bay). The ash tray has three lips on the side of the dish for resting a cigarette. The base is gold-coloured and is slightly tarnished. ‘Warrnambool Victoria’ tourism in warrnambool

This tray was commissioned as a perpetual trophy for the Apex District 2 (south west Victoria) public speaking competition. The names of 27 winners from 1977 to 2003 are inscribed on the tray. Apex Clubs are service clubs that provide people with the opportunity to volunteer within their community. Members are aged between 18 and 45. The first Apex Club was formed in Geelong in 1931 and Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club established in 1931. It went into recess in 1941 and was re-established in 1952. The club closed in 2011. This tray is of interest as an example of the awards given by local Apex Clubs and is retained because the Warrnambool Apex Club closed in 2011. This is a rectangular-shaped silver-plated tray with an etched decorative pattern, two handles attached to the base by metal screws and two side railings also attached to the tray by metal screws. The base has a brown board (mock leather?) inserted through the metal screws. The tray has the names of the winners of the trophy inscribed around the edge of the tray. The tray’s silver is slightly rusted. ‘Apex District 2 Perpetual Public Speaking Trophy Donated by Murray Kelson’ warrnambool apex club, history of warrnambool

Published by Dept. of Agriculture Division of Horticulture Victoria. Harcourt district exported immense quantities of apples and pears, each box containing fruit that had been sized (by diameter) so as to have uniform-sized fruit in the box, wrapped in tissue paper, all packed base- or stem-end against the cheek of its neigbouring piece, to restrict movement/bruising of the apples in transit. A colourful label on the end of the box had a space to insert the size and count, i.e. the number of pieces of fruit in the box. If the packer followed the chart the count was determined from the chart by reference to the diameter of the fruit as it came off the grader. Harcourt’s reputation for quality fruit was enhanced by the ability to deliver uniform-sized blemish-free and unbruised fruit which then attained premium prices in the market, contributing to the prosperity of the district.
