This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. Ernest Forras came first to Falls Creek but settled at Mt Buller and established Kooroora Chalet. It was built on the site of Cow Camp Hut in 1954. The Chalet was destroyed by fire in 1961 and rebuilt in 1965. After the rebuild, they installed a large generator and sold electricity to their neighbours. Kooroora gained a reputation as the party place of Mt Buller. It was purchased by Richard Paine in 1994. Ernest Forras died at Mt Buller on Sunday 31st October 2010. At the end of the 2018 winter season, the Kooroora Chalet underwent a major refurbishment. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. He had remained actively involved in Falls Creek and was generous with his time and knowledge, always an amazing supporter of The Falls Creek Museum and Falls Creek Village.This photo is significant because it features Ernest Forras who originally came to Falls Creek but settled at Mt Buller and established Kooroora Chalet. Robert JENYNS (1944 - 16/11/2015) Born Melbourne, Victoria Bob Jenyns' career spanned over four decades. Producing sculptures, prints, drawings, and paintings hee has participated in many of Australia's most significant art exhibitions including the first Biennale of Sydney (1973), the 1973, 1975 and 1978 Mildura Sculpture Triennials, the 1981 Australian Perspecta, the 2nd Australian Sculpture Biennale, and the 1990 Sculpture Triennial. Jenyns was a finalist in the 2006 Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, and in 2007 won the award with his work Pont de l'archeveche. At the age of 16 Jenyns studyied advertising art at the Caulfield Institute of Technology. He then studied fine art with artist/teachers including Ken Scarlett, Kenneth Jack and Fred Cress, and night life drawing classes at the National Gallery schools under John Brack. After graduating the 20 year old Jenyns taught sculpture and carving at Aspendale Technical School (Melbourne). Two years later he moved to Daylesford and where he taught art until 1978, having received teaching qualifications from Hawthorn Teachers College in 1972. From 1979 Jenyns was based in Tasmania, initially lecturing in sculpture at the Tasmanian School of Art and later serving as head of the sculpture department until 2005. Vincent Michael Gervasoni was the son of John Gervasoni and Catherine Cugley of 'Pine View' Yandoit Creek. John Gervasoni's father, Luigi Gervasoni, was born at San Gallo, Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy. Date is approximate. Donor's connection with Armitstead's Woodyard was that Frank Foley was a long term employee. The Empire Day movement was instituted in England in 1904 and on 24 May 1906 a group of Surrey Hills residents pledged to make Empire Day a success. From 1932-1938 large Empire Day celebrations were held in Surrey Hills and business and commercial vehicles were decorated to take part in large processions held in May each year. These attracted large crowds from all over Melbourne. The truck is parked outside Nethercourt Hospital at 15 Barton Street. The Armitstead family had a business in Union Road which supplied wood in winter and ice in summer. Photos such as this one are evidence of the importance once attached to celebrating Empire Day, which was held on 24 May (Queen Victoria’s birthday). From 1905, a range of patriotic activities across Australia were performed on this day. There was a focus on schoolchildren, who were given a half-holiday, and the occasion was often highlighted with bonfires and fireworks in the evening - in this area at Beckett Park. The parade down Union Road was famous throughout Melbourne and attracted large crowds. Floats in the parade were often decked with British flags. The pro-Empire sentiment in the Surrey Hills area in part reflected the background and strong ties of many families.Black and white photo of a delivery truck with bunting and ferns over the cabin and back.
