Originally named James Young, James Clarke was born in 1848 in England, and migrated to Australia with his young daughter Lily in 1887. It is not known when he changed his name, but after he moved to Linton he ran a tobacconist's shop (in Sussex Street, near Barr's Drapery) under the name "J. Y. Clarke". James Young was a prominent businessman, land owner and public figure in the early colonial period of Bacchus Marsh. In February 1868 he offered for sale through the agent W. Anderson 38 blocks of land which ran from the Lerderderg RIver westwards beyond Gisborne Road in the vicinity of the present day Masons Land. The land for sale was described as, 'unsurpassed Agricultural Land, in the immediate vicinity of Bacchus Marsh, varying in size from 2 to 12 acres each'. The sale notice in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 1st February 1868 page 2, also noted that, ' Plans can be seen at Mr. Young's Border Mills Store, and at the Border Inn'. This print of Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870) was given to the College by Robyn Adams, the daughter of the late obstetrician Gordan Findlay. The portrait was gifted to Dr Findlay when he stated his obstetrical practice in Wellington in 1945. The portrait was then passed to Robyn’s late husband, dermatologist Dr John Adams FRACP FACD, and hung on the wall of his dermatology practice in Wellington until 2014. Sir James Young Simpson was a significant figure in the field of obstetrics. Admitted to the University of Edinburgh at the age of fourteen, he was responsible for introducing the use of chloroform for safe analgesia in childbirth, as well as for the development of an ‘air extractor’ (the forerunner to the modern vacuum extractor) and the creation of obstetric forceps with both long and short handles. Significantly, Simpson’s long handled forceps also became the prototype for many subsequent British designs.Charcoal print in an oval shaped wooden frame. The house depicted in this image was constructed in 1865 for James Young a prominent local businessman and participant in community affairs. James Young left Bacchus Marsh in 1869. In 1870 Stone Villa was purchased by local solicitor Francis Gell. In 1872 it was bought by William Collyer. For a time before 1883 it was used as a school operated by Mr Thomas Kissock and his wife. From 1883 until 1922 it was used as a parsonage by the Church of England. In 1922 it was sold to Frederick Slack as a private residence. Since Slack's ownership there have been other owners. As of April 2024 it remains as a private residence and is listed as a heritage property in the Moorabool Shire planning scheme. The identity of the two women and young girl in the foreground of the image has not been established. One of the women, and the child are possibly the wife and daughter of the Rev A.C. McCausland who was the Church of England Vicar in Bacchus Marsh from 1872 until 1885 and would have resided in this house in 1883 when this picture was produced.An early visual record of one of the most culturally and architecturally significant nineteenth century stone houses in Bacchus Marsh.Small sepia 'carte de visite' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Clothes wringer used in the James Young owned house known as the Stone Villa, Bennett Street, Bacchus Marsh. Wringers, also called mangles were used to squeeze water from washed clothes.James Young was a prominent early resident of Bacchus Marsh from the 1850s until the 1870s. This object which was recovered from his house in Bennett Street is indicative of laundry equipment that many moderately affluent households would have owned in the 1860s.Clothes wringer or clothes mangle. James Young migrated to Australia in 1887 with his daughter Lily, living first at Yarrawonga and then moving to Linton. For reasons that are not known, he changed his surname to Clarke. He ran a small tobacconist and barber's shop in Sussex Street near the Shire offices. (An advertisement for "J Y Clarke, hairdresser & tobacconist" appeared in the first edition of the "Grenville Standard", 12 April 1895.) He died in 1917 and is buried at Linton. His daughter Lily married William Murrell (son of Ambrose and Mary Murrell). The Hamilton service for the late King George V was held at Melville Oval on Tuesday 28 January 1936 at 3pm. King George V was born on 03 June 1865, and visited Hamilton in 1881. He ascended to the throne in May 1910, his coronation being held on 22 June 1911. The second visit of King George to Australia was in 1901, and his silver jubilee of reign was in 1935. he died on 21 January 1936. Hamilton Town Councillors in 1936 were James Young (Mayor), J.G. James Young was a prominent businessman, land owner and public figure in the early colonial period of Bacchus Marsh. After his death in 1871 land remaining from his estate in Bacchus Marsh was sold at auction in 1873. The sale of his estate included the substantial stone residence in Bennett Street which later became known as 'Stone Villa'. The sale of his land in 1873 was conducted by local auctioneer James Crook. 29 allotments were advertised for sale, although the plan for the sale indicated 30 allotments. The sale notice in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 11 October 1873 noted that the allotments were " in the very centre and heart of the most populous and business portion of the township, at the same time being the only remaining portion of the business block available for purchase by public sale, which fact intending purchasers should not lose sight of, as the opportunity cannot occur again". The designation of a new street, 'Bennett Street', shown on the plan, is also indicated in the advertising, "In reference to the main street frontages, opposite the Border Flour Mills. The Auctioneer would also direct attention to the plan, showing the formation of a new thorough fare (Bennett street) leading from Young street into Gell street, thus opening up the township on the high, more healthy, and commanding position so much to be desired for private dwellings".An important cartographic document which indicates an early major subdivision of land in the inner urban area of the Bacchus Marsh township. This subdivision lead to the continuing residential and commercial development of the township of Bacchus Marsh in the later part of the 19th century. This store in Main Street Bacchus Marsh was first opened by James Young in November 1866. In October 1869 it was purchased by William Anderson and was operated by members of the Anderson family until 1971. The site of the store was on the southern side of Main Street on the eastern side of Eddie Toole Park. On the opposite side of the street was the site of the former Post Office on the northern side of Main Street. The store was first named the Border Mills Store during James Young's ownership and was later known as the Border Store (Anderson & Co.).Small black and white photograph showing Anderson’s store. A meeting at the Koroit Town Hall on May 23, 1888, unanimously decided to form the Koroit and Tower Hill Butter Factory coy. Ltd. Mr W J Anderson started the movement to establish a butter factory to suit the convenience of the share farmers of the Tower Hill Park estate in the early 1890's. St Katherine’s Anglican Church was built in 1858, by Anthony Beale as a memorial to his late wife Katherine. The cemetery is a rare example in Victoria of a traditional English parish church with its private graveyard and is of State Significance. This was the first press photograph transmitted by radio from England to Australia. On 16 October 1934, South Australian aviator, C J Melrose, was pictured beside his plane at the Mildenhall aerodrome, England, preparing for the start of the Centenary Air Race. Within hours of capture, the image was transmitted from London to Melbourne and then sent via picturegram to Sydney’s press, the greatest distance a photograph had been transmitted over radio. Wirephotos, as they are commonly called, are produced through electrical pulses which travel along telephone or telegraph wires, or radio waves. Like the transmission of Morse dots and dashes, the technology communicates the light and dark portions of an image, to be recorded on a negative or photographic paper at the receiver’s end. Previously, photographs of an event appeared several days after the fact; wirephoto technology enabled visual communication with relative speed. Alexander Russell Simpson, the nephew of James Young Simpson, invented these forceps, which are also known as axis-traction forceps.Possibly collected by Dr Frank Forster. Examined and identified by Bryan Hibbard.Set of A.R.Simpson style forceps. Consists of two plated metal forcep blades with ebony handles. The inside of the handle of one blade is engraved with the text 'Left Lower first'. The inside of the handle of the second blade is engraved with the text 'J.GRAY & SON/SHEFFIELD'. Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan worked in the Victorian country town of Casterton as a general practitioner from 1919 until his death in 1977. He also practiced obstetrics. His son, Dr David More O'Sullivan donated his obstetric bag and its contents to the College in 1999.
