St Kilda Park, now Albert Park Reserve, showing cows, eucalyptus trees, oval and a railway viaduct in background. The viaduct was part of the Windsor to St Kilda loop line which operated between 1857 and 1867. The loop line ran from the St Kilda railway station on a combination of wooden viaducts and earth embankments fifteen feet high, crossing over St Kilda and Punt Roads by way of bridges and then gradually decreasing to a level crossing at Union Street and then on to Windsor station. Thornton in 1941.A very small photograph which has been made into a plain, beige-coloured card with cut decorative edge and printed borders around edge of card and edge of photograph. The photograph shows Linton Post Office and Bank of New South Wales. A car (1940s or 1950s Holden?) is parked in Sussex Street outside the bank building. The words "A View at Linton" are printed on the front of the card underneath the photograph. A paper insert in the card has printed on one half: "May all the joys of an old-time Christmas be yours, and may the New Year be a happy one". A Kew Patriotic Carnival was held in Victoria Park in 1941. The event was promoted in the Argus newspaper as: "KEW CARNIVAL - A carnival, at which more than 25 local organisations will co-operate in raising funds for Kew Patriotic Society, will be opened at Victoria Park. Kew this afternoon. The carnival will begin at 2 p.m. to-day and will continue to-morrow. There will be afternoon and evening sessions each day. Arrangements have been made for open-air dances, bicycle races, athletic events, tennis tournaments, folk dancing, miniature golf, and a shooting gallery. Flowers, sweets, cakes, and re-freshments will be sold at stalls conducted by auxiliaries, and lucky envelopes, darts competitions, spinning-wheels, and games will be among the attractions." Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames.This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of mayors and town clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series.Framed portrait of Cr. G.F. A massive tree stump at the end of the Crowes yard served as a buffer stop for trains. In 1941 it was put to use when locomotive G41 spectacularly collided with it. On a particularly foggy night the driver became disoriented, passing unawares through Crowes station and smashing into the stump. The Garrett came to an ungainly halt, and it was three days before the work gang had the stranded locomotive re-railed. It became known locally as 'Over the Black Stump'.B/W. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1980s, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. Legatee Savige was deployed in Greece and this letter recounts the withdrawal of his company and those of Walker and Wrigley. He mentions Thermopylae, Kalamai, and evacuation via the ship Costa Rica, which was bombed by German planes and sunk. HGC Championship Cup 1941, won by E. O. (Eric) McCutchan. Eric was an administrator with the VFL commencing in 1932, he gave 44 years' service to the league. From 1945 to 1955 he was Assistant Secretary of the VFL, and from 1956 to 1965 he was Secretary. He was Administrative Director from 1966 to 1976.
