These three formal photos of LTCOL Lionel ‘Bill’ Sprenger MBE, MID were taken at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 30th of September 1969. ...These three formal photos of LTCOL Lionel ‘Bill’ Sprenger MBE, MID were taken at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 30th of September 1969. LTCOL Bill Sprenger MBE, MID joined the Australian Army on the 10th of June 1940 and after rising through the ranks, his career culminated in his appointment as CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1969 to 1970. Despite suffering debilitating poor health during his appointment, LTCOL Sprenger MBE, MID led the Regiment on the unit’s first Freedom of Entry Parade held in Bendigo on the 14th of June 1970. For more information on this occasion, refer to item 6020.8P. Unfortunately, LTCOL Bill Sprenger MBE, MID passed away on the 5th of December 1970 and was farewelled with a full military funeral. He is remembered as a model of good leadership. More information on LTCOL Sprenger’s tenure as CO of the unit is provided in pages 98 to 99, 102 and 134 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4.These three formal photos of LTCOL Lionel ‘Bill’ Sprenger MBE, MID were taken at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 30th of September 1969. His parents purchased the family home which was at 216 Rattray Road Montmorency in the mid-1950s where he lived until the early 1980’s. David attended St Francis Xavier Primary School, Montmorency from 1962-1967. He then attended the newly opened Parade College Bundoora from 1968 to 1971 and completed his secondary education at Eltham High School in 1972-3. David was a career public servant and worked for both the federal and state governments in a variety of roles from 1977 to 2024. His last role was as Assistant Director, Public Record Office Victoria (2016 - 2024) where he was responsible for overseeing the management of, and access to, the State’s archival collection. He lives in a mud brick residence built by local Eltham artist, Janet Boddy, in the early 1970’s. In September 2022. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia. frank wright henry wood promenade concerts albert hall programme Three booklets of Programmes of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts - 30 July 1960 (66th Season), 5 September 1964 (70th Season) and 9 September 1966 (72nd Season) held at the Royal Albert Hall. ...Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born in 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. He was the youngest of eleven children. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was appointed in 1934 as the Musical Director of the London County Council (the GLC or Greater London Council), where he organized many amazing concerts in most of the 150 parks, in and around the London district. He was also responsible for some of London’s major concerts at Kenwood, the Crystal Palace and Holland Park. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and Conducting and was a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. Frank was awarded an M.B.E. in 1967 and he died in November 1970. According to Sharp’s serial numbering scheme, which encodes the month and year of manufacture of their electronic calculators at least through the mid-1970’s, this calculator was manufactured in September 1969. The technology used in the Memorizer 30/Memorizer 60 was very typical of that of the late 1960s, with small-scale integrated circuits containing a few gates or flip-flops, and a magnetic core memory array for storing the program steps that the user keyed in using the calculator attached to the device. ...According to Sharp’s serial numbering scheme, which encodes the month and year of manufacture of their electronic calculators at least through the mid-1970’s, this calculator was manufactured in September 1969. The technology used in the Memorizer 30/Memorizer 60 was very typical of that of the late 1960s, with small-scale integrated circuits containing a few gates or flip-flops, and a magnetic core memory array for storing the program steps that the user keyed in using the calculator attached to the device. ...The core memory of this calculator was a #D metal box. The pin must have been attached to a card reader or keyboard to enter the programme. According to Sharp’s serial numbering scheme, which encodes the month and year of manufacture of their electronic calculators at least through the mid-1970’s, this calculator was manufactured in September 1969. The technology used in the Memorizer 30/Memorizer 60 was very typical of that of the late 1960s, with small-scale integrated circuits containing a few gates or flip-flops, and a magnetic core memory array for storing the program steps that the user keyed in using the calculator attached to the device. The Model CSA-12, called the "Memorizer 60", was an accessory that could be connected to a Sharp Compet 22 or Compet 32 electronic calculator to allow these machines to be "learn mode" programmed. Programs were "learned" from the keyboard of the calculator, and stored within a core memory array in the Memorizer 60. Programs of up to 60 steps could be stored. The Memorizer 60 could them "play back" the stored steps at high speed, to allow relatively complex math operations to be performed. Information includes a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend monthly meetings, card afternoons, indoor bowls competitions, outings and tours, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The Widows Club Chairman was L/- R.P.F. Goddard and later L/- B Harding and the editor was Mrs B.E. Shepard, Social Worker. The October 1972 edition mentions it was the 75th edition, and mentions it was started in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine 'which had a limited distribution' and they wished to increase circulation to the increasing number of widows. The October 1973 edition has a supplement that includes text of a Legacy week television message given by the HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh The November 1973 edition mentions a Message of Loyalty that was sent to the Queen. Also a Dafydd Lewis Scholarship that was available for a boy to attend tertiary level of education (though it specified NOT available for Arts, Education, Music or Theology courses). The page from October 1973 shows some of the day trips and tours available (such as to New Zealand for $499). Also the new pension rates in the 1973/74 budget. The first edition of the newsletter was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The newsletter was priced at 2c a copy. The price of theatre tickets was $3. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items.
