2Lt Ian George Mathers, (2794496) served with the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery and was in Vietnam with 4th Field Regiment from December 1970 to March 1971 and 12th Field Regiment from March 1971 and June 1971 and was killed in action on June 7, 1971, during the Battle of Long Khahn in Long Khanh Province, Vietnam. He died instantly from a gunshot to the chest while serving as a Forward Observer for B Company, 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. Our banner, with its distinctive rat armed with a pistol and torch portrayed in the traditional 1 Field Squadron colours of red and blue. This was donated by Mrs Elma Desnoy who was the mother of Pte John Walter Desnoy (3791033) who did National Service with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He served in Vietnam with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment from December 1967 to May 1968 Pte Desnow was killed in action whilst on duty on the 26th May 1968.Contains copies of two typed letters written to Roger ? (surname unknown) Mary Nagle dated 3/6/68 and one dated 13/6/68 signed God Bless and the signature is unreadable. There is also a copy of a hand written letter dated 1 July to Roger by Elma Desnoy.
