This set of 20 black & white photographs of the refurbishment of Air Survey Squadron’s production areas, was taken in circa 1982. These refurbishments were most likely in preparation of the AUTOMAP 2 production system and to accommodate the expansion of the Army Survey Regiment’s work force. This photo set also includes the exterior and interior of a new building - 16A, a modular building of several sections transported in and joined together as part of the expansion. Another modular building - 16B was added later in the 1980s to accommodate Technical Services. This collection of five photos was most likely taken in 1980. Wild PUG4 point transfer devices were used by technicians in Air Survey Squadron to stereoscopically view the photography containing the survey control points and the mapping aerial photography. The Control points were transferred from the control photography to the mapping diapositives of aerial photography by drilling their locations into the photographic emulsion. The Zeiss (Jena) Stecometer analytic stereocomparator for air photography was introduced at Air Survey Squadron in 1963. Aerotriangulation production was expedited using computers for analytical photogrammetric processes. Topographic features were extracted with the B8 in 3D and feature coded with attributes, using keyboard, menu, keypad and voice inputs to the computer. The features were stored in the AUTOMAP 2 digital database for subsequent cartographic production and printing. CPL Mick Ellis in photo .3P is operating the Optronix 4040 Scanner/Film Writer in Lithographic Squadron c1990s. In scanning mode, compilation sheets were mounted on the drum and scanned. The resultant raster file was vectorized, feature coded with attributes and stored by cartographic technicians in the AUTOMAP 2 database. These four photographs of SPR Santina (Argetto) Straube capturing topographic features – plotting with a Wild B8 stereo plotter were most likely taken in c1980. Introduced in 1966, the Wild B8 stereo plotter was used for plotting topographic detail and contours. These analogue machines were manually controlled by adjusting the control knobs for the orientation of the 3D image. The B8s used a nine-inch square photo image on a film or glass diapositive which allowed highly accurate extraction of map features. At first, plotting by B8 and B9 equipment was undertaken at the aerial photography scale of 1:80,000 in pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. Sheets were then inked up and reduced photographically to the 1: 100,000 publication scale for scribe impression production. In these photos SPR Santina (Argetto) Straube was plotting with a pencil or ink pen mounted at the far end of the pantograph arm. The plotting procedure was upgraded to direct plotting in ink with photographic reduction to publication scale. In 1975 four B8s were upgraded with tri-axis locaters as part of the Input Sub-system to enable digital extraction to AUTOMAP 1’s topographic database. When AUTOMAP 2 was introduced in 1982 these B8s were upgraded, and additional machines added to expand the Army Survey Regiment’s digital capture capability. These five photographs of map production and the car park area were taken at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980s. The first three photographs were taken in Air Survey Squadron, where aerotriangulation and digital photogrammetric extraction of topographic features from aerial photography were undertaken. Photo .4P was taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. The technicians were probably involved in a rapid response map production, as they all were wearing field uniforms. The Army Survey Regiment’s Duty Room, RAP and Carpark appear in Photo .5P. It was probably taken from the top steps near the SGT’s accommodation block in 1986. This is a set of six staff photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s Officers, Warrant Officers and Sergeants, and each of its four Squadrons at Fortuna, Bendigo in December 1982. Note - Air Survey Squadron’s photo was probably taken in July 1982 as they appear in winter dress. Air Survey Squadron was responsible for aerotriangulation, photogrammetric feature extraction and the AUTOMAP 1 system. Typical tasks were flight planning the acquisition of aerial photography, pugging, mensuration and block adjustments, photogrammetric extraction of topographic features from aerial photography, digital feature editing, map compilation, operating the scanner/plotter, operating the AUTOMAP 1 system and computer programming by civilians. Cartographic Squadron was responsible for the production of the following military products: Joint Operation Graphics, small-scale RAAF Air Charts, large-scale topographic line maps and orthophotomaps. Cartographic technician tasks were scribing, compiling, retouching, masking, type setting, type stickup, terrain embossing, correcting and proving quality control. Headquarters Squadron was responsible for the planning and coordination of map production and contracts. It also performed administrative and support functions such as personnel administration, pay, finance, transportation, records, map Library, kitchens, messes and facility maintenance. It was staffed by Army personnel from RASvy, RACT, AACC, RAAOC and RAEME corps. Other supporting staff at this time included the RAAF Liaison Officer, RAN Liaison Officer and several civilians employed in administration, the Q-Store and grounds maintenance. A component of the Army Svy Regt’s cartographic map production was carried out by the Detachment, a sub-unit located at Bonegilla next to the School of Military Survey. Lithographic Squadron was responsible for the reproduction of map materials and printing of military map products. The main tasks undertaken by photographic technicians were photographic enlargements, reductions and duplication of map reproduction material and processing of aerial photography. This collection of 10 photos was most likely taken in 1984. It’s evident in these photos the visitors were taken on a tour through the production areas of Air Survey Squadron, with Wild B8 photogrammetic plotting workstations featured in the first three photos and demonstrations of the AUTOMAP 2 production system in the following photos. The AUTOMAP 2 system was an upgrade to the AUTOMAP 1 system comprising Intergraph graphic edit workstation terminals networked to VAX 750/785 main frame computers. Unlike AUTOMAP 1, operators could display digital topographic features on monitors for editing. Successful adaptation of this system meant RASvy was at the forefront of digital mapping/cartographic systems in Australia and overseas. The system comprised Input (B8 feature extraction) Raster Scanning (digitising from compilation sheets, Graphic Edit (cartographic completion) and Plot Verification Sub Systems. CAPT Rob John was the project officer responsible for the acceptance trials and implementation of AUTOMAP 2. The system was operational from 1984 to its ‘Newheart’ upgrade in 1993. This collection of 20 photos was most likely taken in 1980. The AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was introduced in 1975. The components of AUTOMAP 1 were the Input Sub-System of four Wild B8s stereoplotters and three Gradicon digitising tables, the Optical Line Following Sub-System – Gerber OLF, the Verification Sub-System – Gerber 1442 drum plotter, the General Purpose Sub-system – HP21MX computer and the Output Sub-System – Gerber 1232 flatbed plotter). The first map was published in 1978 (Strickland 3665-3, 1:50,000). AUTOMAP 1 was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and was the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. This is a set of nine photographs of technicians from the Royal Australian Survey Corps operating aerial surveys equipment c1980s. In photo .1P, CPL Steve Gloster was operating a RC10 air survey camera mounted in an Australian Army Pilatus Porter aircraft. The Wild RC10 super wide-angle air survey cameras were first introduced in 1971, were equipped with virtual distortion free lenses for supplementary, spot and special photography. In photo .2P, Roger Rees was operating Air Profile Recorder (APR) equipment. it was possibly taken during OP NERVOSE 84, sometime between June – August 1984 when based in Ngukurr, Northern Territory. The APR was operated at this time in unison with an RC10 camera. In 1963 the Royal Australian Survey Corps introduced the radar airborne profile recorder (Canadian Applied Research Ltd, Mark V, Airborne Profiler Recorder) was introduced for 1:100,000 mapping to replace terrain heighting by aneroid barometry. Later in 1974-1975, the Australian developed WREMAPS II airborne laser terrain profile recorder was introduced. In photo .3P, Neil Jones appears at the door of Airsearch Beechcraft Queen Air aircraft, Registration / Serial VH-MWX. This aircraft was typically used by RA Svy on air survey operations flying mission with Aerodist, APR and RC10 camera equipment. The Australian Army’s Pilatus Porter (short take-off and landing turbo propeller) was also equipped with a Wild RC10 aerial mapping camera for identification photography. The Pilatus Porter was also used on RA Svy’s map field checking operations. Photo .9P was taken at a survey station at an unknown location. In this photo an Australian Army Kiowa Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) is supporting a field survey party undertaking Magnavox AN/PRR-14 portable Doppler satellite observations. The satellite receiver’s antenna is plumbed over the survey ground mark surrounded by white plastic panels. The panels were used to identify the survey station on aerial photography. Introduced in 1974–1975, the Magnavox AN/PRR-14 portable Doppler satellite (US Navy Navigation Satellite System – TRANSIT) receivers and computing system provided independent three-dimensional point positions anywhere in the world, anytime, in any weather accurate to about 1.5metres with precise satellite ephemerides. The Bell OH-58 Kiowa LOH was a family of military helicopters used for observation, utility, and direct fire support. It was identified by RA Svy in the mid-1970s that considerable time was lost in replacing unserviceable remote equipment by road. Therefore Aerodist operations (pre-dating satellite receiver operations) were fully supported by Army’s Kiowa LOH aircraft. This collection of eight photos was most likely taken in circa 1982-1983, featuring the removal of AUTOMAP 1’s Gerber Optical Line Following (OLF) scanner Sub-System from Air Survey Squadron’s Building 16, in preparation for the installation of the replacement AUTOMAP 2 system. Introduced in 1975, the AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. The Gerber OLF scanner was mainly used to digitise contours on a map sheet separation with individual lines at least 0.125 mm wide and no closer than 0.25 mm to the next line. The operator initiated the OLF by placing its light sensitive digitizing head on a contour line. The OLF could digitise up to 50 mm per second on straight lines and complete an average density contour sheet in approximately 8 hours. The operator occasionally intervened to restart the OLF to allow it to continue if it failed to correctly discriminate the contours. This is a collection of eight photographs of Air Survey Squadron personnel operating aerotriangulation equipment at the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1993. PUG4 devices were used by technicians to stereoscopically view the photography containing the survey control points and the mapping aerial photography. The Control points were transferred from the control photography to the mapping diapositives of aerial photography by drilling their locations into the photographic emulsion. The Zeiss (Jena) Stecometer analytic stereocomparator for air photography shown in photo .1P was introduced at Air Survey Squadron in 1963. These photographs were most likely taken in 1963 and c1965 on two separate occasions of an Australian Army General’s visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. As there are no annotations on the photos, the exact date and the names of the Generals are unknown. Some RASvy personnel are positively identified. The technical tour included the photogrammetric and printing areas of the Regiment. The newly introduced Wild B8 stereo plotter featured in photo .2P and the M.A.N. Although it’s unknown when these two photos were taken, the South African Pattern Mk IV Slotted Template Machine was in service from 1936 to 1952. The machine was used to cut slots and holes in an acetate film medium. This template was then used to fit several runs of aerial photography to ground control points at a desired scale with a substitution of the templates in the assembly. Radial slots on the templates from central holes representing the photograph’s principal point (centre) were placed over hollow metal studs mounted over control points on the scaled base sheet. The studs represented the intersection of radial lines through common points of detail of overlapping photos. A pricker was used to transfer from the photo-points to the templates. The slotted template methodology was later used as an essential aero-triangulation exercise in advance courses conducted at the School of Military Survey.These three photographs are of a slotted template machine used in aero-triangulation. This is a set of six photographs of stereoscopic equipment and personnel at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1950s to c1960s. The stereoscopes shown in photos .1P and .2P were used to stereoscopically view and interpret features in overlapping aerial photographs. The stereoscopic plotters shown in photos .3P and .4P were used to stereoscopically plot topographic detail from overlapping aerial photographs using a pantograph arm with pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. The Ryker Model PL-3 Wernstedt-Mahan type stereoscopic plotter shown in photos .5P and .6P was used for precision contouring, planimetry and profiling. It was a comparatively simple stereoscopic mapping instrument designed to use ordinary contact prints of aerial photographs. It provides for plotting on a constant scale and approximate tilt correction but does not provide refinements such as correction for lens distortion. The plotter in Photo .6P does not have its pantograph arm attached. This is a set of seven photographs of map grid production using co-ordinatorgraphs at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo. c1960s to 1970s. The Aristo Co-ordinatorgraph introduced in 1962 was a large heavy steel framed light table with a scribing head that moved in a XY direction using a vernier calibrated measuring scale to 0.001 of an inch. Whilst hand operated it was much quicker and accurate than manual grid and graticule calculation, plotting and scribing. Mapping PNG presented the Regiment with many challenges. WO1 Farrington and CPL John Dean developed computer software for the digitally controlled co-ordinatorgraph, the Calcomp 718 Flatbed Plotter. Much time was saved by automatically plotted cartographic grids and graticules, and automatically draw base compilation sheets complete with aerial triangulated stereo model control. This could be used for a number of maps and was the first step towards map automation. SGT Bill Boyd appearing in photo .1P reach the rank of WO1 and for 11 years was the technical warrant officer at the Detachment Army Survey Regiment located at Bonegilla, Victoria. He was awarded the OAM, the Order of Australia Medal for the development of the Flexiflow quality control system. This system comprised a series of job plans and charts linked to a task allocation to resource magnetic planning board. Using critical path analysis and task prioritisation, complex job planning was efficiently scheduled, and re-prioritisations readily made. Reproduction requirements were effectively coordinated by way of weekly courier to the Army Survey Regiment. Supervisors and technicians fully embraced the system as they could understand their role, others around them and the positive production achievements. Bendigo.
