A framed photo of the first president of Melbourne Legacy, Legatee Harold Cohen. Harold Edward Cohen (1881-1946), soldier, lawyer, politician and businessman, was born on 25 November 1881. In 1901 Cohen was commissioned in the Field Artillery Brigade, Australian Military Forces, and was promoted captain in 1905 and major in 1909. In 1915 he was appointed commanding officer of the 6th Army Brigade, Australian Field Artillery Regiment, Australian Imperial Force, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, serving in the Middle East, England and France until June 1919. Twice wounded and twice mentioned in dispatches, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1917 and created C.M.G. in 1918. He was awarded the Volunteer Decoration in 1921 and the CBE in 1934. In 1929 Brigadier Cohen entered Parliament as the member for Melbourne South in the Legislative Council, and in 1935 transferred to the Assembly as member for Caulfield, which seat he held until 1943. During the Second World War Brigadier Cohen served in the Middle East as honorary Red Cross Commissioner overseas. This is a collection of 20 photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps phases of map production at the School of Military Survey, Bonegilla, the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo, and the Army Map Depot, Bandiana circa 1990. Photo .1P was probably taken on a survey station overlooking Lake Hume near Albury-Wodonga. The field party occupying the survey station was likely from a Map Control Survey course conducted by the School of Military Survey, Bonegilla. This survey station was part of a geodetic network used in field survey training and RASvy’s Lake Hume Test Range. This is a set of 10 photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties in the Northern Territory and North Queensland in 1959 – 1960. The surveyors were employed in the establishment of mapping and geodetic control. In this era surveyors used theodolites to observe horizontal and vertical angles and tellurometers to measure base line distances between survey stations. Laplace survey observations seen in Photo .1P was a series of precise observations carried out at geodetic survey stations to determine astronomic latitudes, longitudes and azimuths to achieve maximum precision in the survey network. Laplace observations were necessary in a geodetic network at every 6th survey station, however the National Mapping Council specified at this time the spacing would be ideally between 4-6 survey stations. The cairn shown in photo .4P was built by RASvy as a landmark over a trigonometric survey station. It was dismantled in 1960 to enable re-occupation and survey observations. This is a set of 27 black & white photographs of Army Survey Regiment’s Australian Rules football team – the Fortuna Lions aka “Fortuna Fumblers”, taken at Seymour Victoria in 1983. The Fortuna Lions competed in the Puckapunyal Area Football Association for several years from 1978 to 1984 and in 1983, fielded a great team it managed to reach the Grand Final. Held at the neutral ground at Kings Park, Seymour, the match was an incredibly exciting and bruising contest played in damp conditions and ended in a draw. Dave Lawler’s spectacular mark was a highlight. Due to heavy rain during the following week, the Grand Final replay was held the following week in even heavier conditions. The Fortuna Lions prevailed in the replay with an emphatic victory. The team’s leaders were Eddie Jacobs (coach), Rhys De Laine (captain), Greg Else (vice-captain), and Ken Slater (manager). This is a collection of seven photographs of Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) personnel posted to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1957 to 1964. After the disbandment of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) in 1947 there was only one or two of civilian women in administrative positions at Fortuna. In February 1957 female positions from the disbanded Southern Command Field Survey Section in Melbourne were transferred to newly established positions at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo. They were accommodated at the newly acquired ‘Turriff’ mansion in Carpenter Street, Bendigo. Their first Officer Commanding (OC) was CAPT Beryl Perry from 1957 to September 1960. Her replacement as OC was CAPT Carol Castor who served in several positions up to June 1967. The main areas of employment in these early days were in administrative positions, draughting in and retouching in Lithographic Squadron. WO2 MA McLaren was the female to reach the rank of WO2 as a Cartographic Squadron section commander in June 1961. WO1 Marj Knight served at Fortuna from 1959 to 1978 was the first female to reach the rank of WO1. WO1 Knight served in the senior Squadron Sergeant-Major and Technical Warrant Officer positions of Cartographic Squadron. She was also the first female PMC of the Army Survey Regiment SGT’s Mess. The WRAAC uniform seen in this collection was replaced in 1979. These three photographs were most likely taken from the 1950s to the 1970s. The RASvy surveyor in each photograph was taking angular measurements with the observer recording their readings on a booking form. They were probably employed in establishing mapping and geodetic control operations or the surveyors may have been in training. Photo .1P was possibly taken at Mount Alexander in Central Victoria, a location close to Bendigo, as the stone cairn in the background of the photo appears to be identical to the cairn presently located on top of the mountain. Initially all text on military maps was hand lettered in ink and an extremely high level of proficiency was required. Later technology changes meant that there was less reliance on hand lettering. This Journal "The bad bit across the River" was written by - LtCol HPG Clews in 1934 and is about his experiences around the Colo River approximately 60 miles NW of Sydney, NSW. LtCol Clews was a remarkable man and his achievements were just as remarkable. He is affectionately known as "The Major." He served in the British Army 1909 - 1911 with the Sherwood Foresters. He then served in the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1912 - 1949 and then served as the Senior Surveyor with the Snowy Mountains Authority from 1950-1958. A Survey Cairn is errected in Khancoban to record his life 1890 - 1980. This Journal records the field trip to establish Survey Control in very rugged country by a handful of party members on foot. This is a unique example of a hand drawn plane table sheet produced in the first year of the Australian Survey Corps by original members of the Corps. Roseblade and Lynch 5 Dec 1915. Of interest is the documented times that it took to create the original field sheet. Also of interest is the fact that this field sheet that was used to create the actual SYDNEY map sheet was contoured, many map sheets produced up until now were purely planimetric and lacked contouring that was needed for military use.
