Sandakan- Panali, North Borneo were the places of the infamous Sandakan death march. Thousands of allied POWS died. Aust lost 1787 men. Refer to the Australian War Memorial for details. Robert Oswald HENDERSON had previous service in the Militia dating from 1899 with the 67th Battalion. (Born Bendigo) He enlisted in the AIF with the rank of Major as 2IC in the 38th Bn on 1.5.1916 at the age of 41 years. Embarked for England 20.6.1916, embark for France 22.11.1916, promoted to Lt Col to command the 39th Bn 15.2.1917, hospital 17.9.1917 with Defective vision, appears to a have rejoined his unit same day, WIA 29.3.1918 GSW to left thumb, rejoin unit 13.6.1918, KIA 29.9.1918 near Bony on the Hindenburg Line. Buried by the Rev W.A.Moore on 1.10.1918. He was awarded the DSO 18.1.1918 and Mentioned in Despatches 25.5.1918. The Beehive Store was a major Department Store in Pall Mall Bendigo.Photo of the Australian War Grave in France of Lt Col. R O HENDERSON DSO 39Bn. KIA. Newspaper - 'The forgotten heroine' Visitors to New Cheltenham Cemetery in Melbourne would not know that a highly decorated and dedicated nurse was buried there. Her grave is unmarked, there is no reference to her achievements or selfless dedication. Estelle Lee Archer died in 1960, at the Repatriation General Hospital, Heidelberg, age 78 from a perforated ulcer. Margaret Leyden wants the Office of Australian War Graves to recognise that her great-aunt died from war-related injuries and to restore and maintain her grave. Margaret, who never met her aunt, has pieced together her history, including that Estelle's medals, including the prestigious Royal Red Cross 2nd Class for services in support of our ANZACs have ended up in the MAryborough Military & Colonial Museum after they were bought at a second hand shop. Estelle served in seven army units and was in the Middle East, England and France for the duration of World War 1. After the war she continued to dedicate her life to the care of soldiers. The Warrnambool Family History Group was established in 1980. It has been running Warrnambool cemetery tours for a great number of years with the late Marie Boyce being a prominent organizer of these tours. The tours are usually held in January and on Anzac Day and over recent years have concentrated on a theme to provide information on a certain group of people (eg Mayors, war heroes). These sheets are a good example of the graves visited during the Warrnambool Cemetery tours and the information given on these people. These are two yellow A4 sheets typed back and front with information on people buries in the Warrnambool Cemetery and a sketch map of the Warrnambool Cemetery.
