Pamphlet - Australian Survey Corps - Freehand Lettering Pamphlet 1947, Australian Survey Corps, Balcombe, 1947
All members of the Australian Survey Corps, that was later renamed the Royal Australian Survey Corps were expected to be proficient at freehand lettering and figuring. Initially all text on military maps was hand lettered in ink and an extremely high level of proficiency was required. Later technology changes meant that there was less reliance on hand lettering. This 17 x foolscap sized page booklet with light buff coloured cardboard covers held together with an ARNOS fastener was used to teach members of the Australian Survey Corps how to Hand Letter in 1947. Example practice lettering style work sheets are included at the rear of the document.17 x foolscap sized pages with light buff coloured cardboard covers held together with an ARNOS fastener. Administrative record - Royal Australian Survey Corps - 1st, 2nd and 3rd Order Triangulation Precis, School of Military Survey, Balcombe, Circa 1948 - 1960
A School of Military Survey Precis, 8 x foolscap sized pages of typed text, stapled and two hole punched. The precis No 3 covers the Observation procedure to be used for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Order Triangulation using the Royal Australian Survey Corps standard Cooke, Troughton and Simms Tavistock or Wild T2. The geodetic model Tavistock with a 5.25" horizontal circle should be used for 1st Order Triangulation and maybe used for 2nd Order Triangulation if specially directed. The standard Tavistock with 3.5" horizontal circle or the Wild T2 should be used for 2nd and 3rd Order observations. The Precis discusses the types of errors, the source of errors and the best ways of managing them. In surveying, triangulation is the process of determining the location of a point by measuring only angles to it from known points at either end of a fixed baseline by using trigonometry, rather than measuring distances to the point directly as in trilateration.A School of Military Survey Precis, 8 x foolscap sized pages of typed text, stapled and two hole punched.royal australian survey corps, rasvy, fortuna, army survey regiment, army svy regt, asr, school of military survey, sms, balcombe -

Cheltenham and Heatherton are suburbs in the City of Kingston that were originally established as a rural market gardening community. The market gardens, farms and paddocks have gradually been sub-divided into housing and industrial estates and associated infrastructure such as schools and shopping facilities. This aerial image covers a diverse section of the City of Kingston, taking in the suburbs of Cheltenham, Heatherton, Mentone and Parkdale. By 1984, the market gardens of the district have been replaced by housing and factories. The Nylex factory is visible and now closed. Mentone Bowl on the corner of Warrigal Road and Nepean Highway has now been replaced by high rise apartments, another feature of the changing landscape in the City of Kingston. The vacant land now occupied by the Moorabbin Airport Direct factory Outlet (DFO) is also depicted.Aerial photograph of Cheltenham, Heatherton, Mentone and Parkdale within the City of Kingston. Photograph - Black and white, c. 1958
This photograph depicts flooding of Ozone Avenue in Beaumaris, located off Balcombe Road. Roads in the Beaumaris area lacked sufficient drains to clear surface water. In many cases streets were unsealed and without footpaths and some were dirt tracks. Gutters and road surfaces were made of clay and in the wetter months of winter, unsealed roads and tracks became impossible quagmires that were unnavigable for vehicles and pedestrians. In the first decade after World War II there was rapid expansion in construction of new houses in the suburb of Beaumaris. Utilities and infrastructure to support the growth of housing was inadequate and not provided for prior to the development of the area. Without rudimentary drainage, flooding was frequent. Storm water runoff, domestic sullage and septic tank overflow would form large pools and families were sometimes marooned within their homes. The frequent flooding caused isolation and hardship and residents endured difficulties with accessibility to facilities. These disadvantages had the potential to cause social issues for the new residents.Black and white photograph of flooding in Ozone Avenue, Beaumaris. Melbourne Legacy
Document, Origin and Record of Blamey House December 1939 - January 1947, 1987
Copies of correspondence with Mr K Crouch asking for the history of Blamey House. Plus a photocopy of the history pages from the Blamey House roll that is kept in glass display cabinets at Legacy House. Blamey House was one of the residences used by Legacy as a home for Junior Legatees. The first few pages of the book (item 02298) explains the history and significance of the name Blamey House - which was photocopied and sent to Mr Crouch. Blamey House was originally the name of a hostel set up in World War 2 for servicemen that needed short term accommodation and food. It was originally situated in Melbourne CBD on the corner of King and Collins Streets in the Robbs Building (since demolished). When the hostel was no longer required after the war, the trustees of Blamey House donated money - almost 20,000 pounds, to Legacy for a children and toddlers' home which was established in Balcombe Road Beaumaris. The condition of donation was that the name Blamey House be used and when the Balcombe Road property was sold in 1956 the name was transferred to Holmbush, another Legacy residence. When it was sold in 1977 the name transferred to Harelands until Legacy sold it in 1980.A record of the history known about the donation made to Legacy to establish Blamey House in 1947.Black and white A4 photocopy x 12 pages on history of Blamey House, part of it copied from the Blamey House roll and some of correspondence between K Crouch and Legacy.blamey house, blamey, residences, hostel -

Work on paper - ink and watercolour, Annette Meikle, St Vincent de Paul's Children's Home, 1977
In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003.
