Tram 14 was a small green and cream single truck tram operated by one person. Entry was by the narrow door at the driver's end of the tram. People would pay their fare to the driver. There was no conductor. Pink advertisement for the Bendigo Bank was on the side. The tram is photographed outside the Shed at the Ballarat Tramway Museum. Tram body was built in 1915 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. Sold to the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. Ltd. in 1927 and ran in Geelong. Transferred by the State Electricity Commission to Ballarat in 1936. It was the last tram to be overhauled by the SEC. This tram was built by Meadowbank Manufacturing Company of Sydney in 1915. First used by Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust, then went to Geelong. It came to Ballarat in 1936. When the trams stopped running in Ballarat it went to Dalyesford and District Historical Society. In 1977 it was acquired by the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society (Ballarat Tramway Museum from 1995). The tram body was built in 1916 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. It ran as Tram 75. In 1927 it was sold to the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. Ltd and ran as Geelong Tram 29.The State Electricity Commission tranferred the tram to Ballarat in 1936 and it became Tram 14. The tram is the property of the Ballarat City Council and on loan to the Museum. This photograph was taken in December 1971. Tram 13 is a single truck with drop ends and an open California combination. It was built in 1915 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. When the Ballarat tramways closed it was donated to the Lake Goldsmith Steam Preservation Society and returned to Ballarat on loan in 1983. The Senior Technical Schools Athletics Association ‘Herald Shield’ is one of many timber and metal repoussé commissions undertaken by students and staff at the Ballarat Technical Art School. The School was known for the quality of its art metal work which was applied to product, interior and commemorative designs. Between 1915 and 1936 Wilfred Kenneth (c1883-1957) taught boys and girls at preparatory and senior levels, including the ‘Art Metal Work and Repoussé’ industrial design specialisation. During World War I, Kenneth oversaw the training of repatriated soldiers which catalysed into a new, a successful art metal business, the Decorative Metal Craft Company in Chancery Lane, Ballarat. Albert E. WILLIAMS (1899-1986) Born Victoria, Australia Albert Edward Williams was among the first to undertake the five-year, Technical Art Teacher’s Certificate (TATC) at the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1915, with work placement at the Ballarat Lithographic company. Williams taught for several years before he was selected to undertake further teacher training at the Working Men’s College, Melbourne, in 1926. He returned to teach at Ballarat in 1928, facilitating many student activities, while pursuing the arduous Art Teacher’s Certificate. From its inception in 1914, it was 30 years before the first candidate achieved the certificate’s exhaustive requirements. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Albino PAGANETTI (1915-1974) Born Victoria. This work won Albino Elvezio (Albert) Paganetti won third place in the Department of Agriculture’s poster competition for their official journal in 1937. The previous year, he took home several prizes at the Wiltshire Poster Contest, including first for ‘Bryant and May’; first for ‘Healing’s Batteries’, and second for the Royal Melbourne Show. A MacRobertson prize-winner, when Paganetti, completed his commercial art course at the Ballarat Technical Art School, he accepted a design position at Morshead and Co., Ballarat. Albert’s farming family lived at Italian Hill, near Daylesford, where his father was a vigneron. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Donald REFSHAUGE (1912-1952) A Senior Technical Scholarship recipient, Donald Hamilton Refshauge studied Commercial Art between 1929 and 1935. He was a highly successful student, winning multiple prizes at competition. His father, John Henry (Johann Heinrich) Refshauge, was headmaster at the Ballarat Agricultural High School. Donald Refshauge worked as a commercial artist near Ballarat, until he moved to Hamilton with his aging mother, Donella, in 1949. Sadly, within three years he died, aged 40. His probate notice labelled him a ‘retired farmer’. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
