This medallion was produced for the Ballarat College centenary celebrations held during 1964. The insciption on the back of the medallion is translated: 'as with our fathers, may God be with us'. As such is appropriately expresses the sentiment of the College council at this auspicious milestone in the College history and reflects the Christian heritge of the College.Gold-plated, oval-shaped medallion featuring Ballarat College crest and centenary inscription. The college crest is red and black enamel and the Minerva head, inscriptions and other marking are gold-plate. There is circular link attachment at the top. These were the first honour boards created by Ballarat College to honour the top academic student of each year. The first award was given in 1868 four years after the school opened. The boards were one display in the Assembly Hall (Sturt Street building north wing). Two of the boards are featured in 1918 photographs of the Assembly Hall. Mein's history of Ballarat College, published 1964, records the school's first enrolments this way. "The Ballarat College will be opened on Wednesday morning, 6th July, 1864, at 9 o'clock, in the Rev. Wm. Henderson's Church. Intending students will assemble at that hour" Advertisement in the Ballarat Star. 'Two seven year old boys 'assembled'. They were cousins, and their names were: Samuel Baird and James Brown. The hall accomodates approximately 670 people in theatre type seating and was intended for multiple purpose use by community groups as well as by the College. The Victoria Education Gazette and Teachers' Aid was published for Victoria's teachers and was sent to all school on the state.
