... Baulch Family, Western Victoria.... Sections of his lands were acquired by the Baulch family.... Sections of his lands were acquired by the Baulch family ...These two maps of the Kapong/ Hawkesdale area in Victoria show the original lands that belonged to the pioneer settler, Charles Hamilton MacKnight and the handwritten annotations that show the subsequent owners of these lands. Charles Hamilton Macknight (1819-1873) came to Australia from Scotland in 1841 and in 1842, with partners, James Irvine and William Campbell, established the property of Dunmore in Broadwater (24 kilometres from Hawkesdale). He was a prominent breeder of sheep, cattle and horses. Sections of his lands were acquired by the Baulch family and these maps were acquired from a member of the Baulch family, with Stanley Baulch being the possible annotator of the Kapong map. These maps are of interest as they show the properties that belonged to the pioneer settler, Charles Hamilton MacKnight and the subsequent division of these lands, some of these passing into the hands of the Baulch family. As the Kapong map also shows other original landowners, it will be a useful tool for researchers..1 This is a map of Kapong in the County of Villiers. It is on a rectangular-shaped piece of linen-backed paper with black printing and some handwritten annotations in red ink. It is crumpled at the edges. .2 This is a rectangular-shaped piece of paper showing a map of the Hawkesdale area. The printed material is in grid form in black, green and red. These items concern the history of the Baulch family ownership ...These items concern the history of the Baulch family ownership of Cowabee, a large grazing property in the Riverina in N.S.W. In the 1870s Samuel Baulch, the son of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch, established a property in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale area called Rose Park. In 1893 he acquired Dunmore, a nearby property, and Rose Park became part of that estate. In 1910 Samuel Baulch purchased Cowabee in N.S.W. and Stan Baulch, the son of Samuel and Eliza, later managed Cowabee for some years. After Samuel’s death Stan Baulch and his two brothers split up Dunmore and Stan acquired the eastern third which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. This booklet and associated material is of some historical interest as a summary of the history of Cowabee, one of the properties owned by the Baulch family of the Western District in the early 20th century. It will be of some use to researchers, with the photographs an added bonus. .1 This is a booklet of 41 pages with a buff-coloured paper cover with a black tape binding. Correspondence (Rose Park), 1940s
... Baulch Family, Western District, Victoria... of their land. These items will be useful for research. Baulch Family ...These are four letters and a document regarding the proposal in the 1940s by the Victorian Department of Lands and Survey to acquire sections of the property, Rose Park, to establish several Soldier Settlement farms. Rose Park, near Willatook, was owned by Stan Baulch (1897-1980), the son of Samuel and Eliza Baulch. Samuel Baulch had acquired the property of Dunmore, between Macarthur and Hawkesdale, in 1893 and Stan had inherited portion of this property after his father’s death. He named his portion Rose Park. The Soldier Settlement Commission wanted to acquire 1500 acres of Rose Park but Stan Baulch argued successfully that the management of his farm could not withstand the loss of so much land and eventually 300 acres of Rose Park land was sold for closer settlement. Stan Baulch was a prominent member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years and contributed many articles and booklets on local historical matters. This correspondence is of interest as an example of the establishment of Soldier Settlement farms in Victoria post World War Two and the difficulties faced by some property owners opposed to the acquisition of their land. These items will be useful for research. .1 A six-page letter written in pencil .2 A two page letter in black typing ( contents as in .1 above) .3 A one page letter, typed, with a handwritten signature .4 A sheet of paper containing a statement re purchase of land with some inserted handwritten material .5 A two page letter with handwritten material baulch family, western district, victoria, history of warrnambool -

The history is of interest to researchers and the information contained in it has been updated and extended by historians in recent times. William Earle, a printer with a business in Port Fairy came to Australia with his parents, William and Mary, in 1854. He was a Councillor and Mayor and was heavily involved in local community affairs. He died in 1902 at the age of 51. The information regarding bullock teams mainly ...These two booklets were personal copies of a piece of writing by Stan Baulch. They tell of the use of bullocks as transport carriers in the early years of the 20th century and of those colourful characters, the bullock drivers or bullockies. Stanley Samuel Baulch (1897-1979) was the grandson of pioneer settlers in the Kirkstall area, Francis and Ann Baulch. In the early 1840s the property of Dunmore, situated between Macarthur and Port Fairy was acquired by Charles Macknight and partners and in the late 19th century a portion of this run was acquired by the Baulch family. The information regarding bullock teams mainly comes from the years spent at the properties of Rose Park near Orford and Dunmore by Stan Baulch and was originally given as a talk to members of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at a meeting in 1976. In a Society newsletter at the time Stan Baulch was described as ‘a good and faithful member’, being a foundation member from the time of the Society’s establishment in 1966.These booklets are of great interest, firstly as a personal account of the use of bullocks as carriers in the Western District of Victoria in the early 20th century and secondly as personal copies of a piece of writing from a prominent member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in the mid 1970s. .1 This is a soft cover booklet of 16 pages. National Wool Museum
Textile - Quilt, Rosemary A.O. Cameron, Celebration Quilt, 1990
From Rosemary Cameron - This quilt has been made in 100% wool to celebrate the diversity, durability and beauty of pure wool, especially the lightweight cool wools. The woollen patches were kindly donated by Mr. David Jones, managing Director of Fletcher Jones and Staff which were pre-cut samples of European Fabrics in various weights, textures and colours. I had the task of creating a design around the fabrics available, some of which I only had to sample. I chose to surround my design with dark shades to encompass at the top of the quilt, the lightness of the sky and the trees, in the middle the warmth of summer, the dryness of central Australia and at the bottom the rick tones of Opals, our mineral wealth and the internal heart of earth. To add excitement and texture to this design I chose 31 Australian Wildflowers including all the Australian Floral Emblems, some unusual wildflowers and favourite small wildflowers. Twice life size, these flowers have been made of silk wool and cotton, embroidered, painted and beaded by our creative and talented Hamilton Quilters, their results are fantastic! The brilliance and timeless quality of these Australian Wildflowers intensify and complement the colours of the Wool Quilt. The Quilt was hand pieced and hand quilted at quilting bees. It has a woollen batting, binding and backing which was a delight to work with and very easy to quilt. The flowers were assembled and attached in small working bees. To the fifty-two Hamilton Quilters who have worked on this quilt for six months thank you for you hard work and creativity especially Joan H. Lyons for her time, enthusiasm and knowledge when difficulties arose. Joan M. Lyons has worked with me on various stages of this Quilt, her help and support has been tremendous. To my family who have tolerated scraps of wool and silk, photographs, wildflower books and specimens and drawings which have at times almost taken over our house, a year from ideas to completion, thank you for your support and help in many ways.Multi coloured patchwork quilt with native flowers protruding from centre in a diamond shape.Embroidered on back - "The Celebration Quilt" Made in 1990 by The Hamilton Quilters, Designed by Rosemary A.O. Journal, Baulch, Early 20th century
This ledger’s first owner was Rolf Crawley, an architect and the official engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle also worked for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the family members recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. Stan Baulch later acquired the ledger, tore out the pages that had been used and recorded some aspects of his life from 1916 to 1923. Stanley Baulch (1897-1980) was the grandson of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch and the son of Samuel and Eliza Baulch. In 1893 Samuel Baulch acquired the historic property of Dunmore, between Macarthur and Hawkesdale and in 1910 he purchased the property of Cowabee in the Riverina district in N.S.W. Stan Baulch managed Cowabee for some years before inheriting part of Dunmore which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. Although only a few pages in length, this diary contains much interesting information on the early years of Stan Baulch at the homesteads of Cowabee and Dunmore. It will be useful for research purposes. This is a hard cover ledger with a dark grey cover and dark red binding. It contains pages printed with the name and address of the Shire of Warrnambool Engineer, Rolf Crawley. These pages contain two sections to a page ruled with blue lines to be used for short letters or invoices (originally 500 sections). The ledger also has blank pink pages used for duplicate copies. The first 42 sections have been torn out. Twenty of the pages have handwritten material in blue ink and these are biographical notes about the years 1916 to 1923 written in the ledger at a later date by Stan Baulch.Cowabee-Dunmore S.S.B. diaries 1916-23stanley baulch, cowabee & dunmore properties, rolf crawley, history of warrnambool
