The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan (1996) by Andrew Ward and Associates - Vol 3 "Nithsdale", built for J.S. Crouchin 1858 and extended in 1885 with a tower and associated rooms, survives as testimony to the nineteenth century occupation of the vicinity of the Kambrook/Glen Eira Road intersection. Caulfield's Building Heritage by Dr Geulah Solomon, Vol 1 p49 records it as a small Victorian mansion home on bluestone foundations of Italianate style with a tower. Built for J S Chambers circa 1860, it was built in stages and then the land subdivided in the 1920s. Other owners include Adolph F Brockhoff (of Brockhoff Biscuits company). In 1881 Cyrus Bath Retallack purchased land now known as 1200 Mair Street Ballarat. Retallack was a successful Cornish miner and engineer. He built a two storey brick mansion between 1882 and 1883, naming the property ‘Carn Brae’ after the castle in Cornwall. Substantial grounds were established with with range of exotic trees planted, a tennis court was laid out and a stables building was erected. In 1918 the site become a campus of Queen’s GIrls’ Grammar School, then Aquinas College which was merged into the Australian Catholic University from 1973. Mount Pleasant Primary School 1435 was formerly known as Clayton's Hill, and evolved from a tent school, commenced in 1855 by William McIntosh. When changed from a Wesyleyan day school to a Common School it was given the number 424, received State funding and was conducted by William H. Nicholls. On 01 January 1873 the school became a non-vested school under control of the Education Department until 31 August 1873. The State then leased the school until 31 July 1874, with the current brick school, Mount Pleasant No.1436, opening on 01 August 1874. The Head Teacher of the new school was William H. Nicholls, remained at the school until 1887. His assistants were Thomas Gray, Jane Shaw, Jane Tratham, Catherine J. Berriman, John Blight, Herbert Berchaivaise and Annie Hicks, all who had worked at Mount Pleasant No. 424. William Nicholls and his assistant Gray established after school classes to enable students to gain Exhibitions and Scholarships to matriculate for the University of Melbourne, and courses enabling entry to teaching, pharmacy and civil service. Before the establishment of State Secondary and Technical Educaiton over 100 pupils from Mount Pleasant Primary School has matiriculated and entered the various professions. (Visions and Realisations, Vol. 2, pg 653 and 767) William Henry Williams became the first classifier of teachers for the Victorian Education Department. He died aged 51 while Head Teacher at Yarra Park Primary School on 01 April 1899. Some former students of this school include: J.G. Eagleston (County Court Judge); H.E. Starke (Judge of the High Court of Australia ); Bernard O'Dowd (parliamentary draughtsman and poet); Albert Coates (Surgeon and Medical Officer in Burmese Prisoner of War Camps). Original architects' drawings for the construction of Trades Hall, Ballarat. November 5th 1886 the building committee called for tenders for the erection of a Trades Hall on the following conditions. The amount to be expended to be no more than £3,000; bluestone foundations; the front of the building to be of Grampians freestone and walls of brick. Clutha was the home of John Carson, the second mayor of Kew. Leonard Terry designed the house for him in 1856. Terry was the architect of the Melbourne Club (1858), the former London Chartered Bank (1861), Lothian Terrace in Carlton (1865), and the ES&A Bank in Hawthorn (1873). The commission for Clutha was won three years after Terry’s arrival in Victoria.An extremely rare photograph of a major residential architectural commission of Leonard Terry. The photograph of the house has statewide significance as the home of the Victorian pioneer and businessman, John Carson. A rare, nineteenth century photograph of ‘Clutha’ in Studley Park Road, Kew. The sepia-toned photograph is of the front of the house, with its bluestone foundations and its second storey balcony. A real estate advertisement in 1875 described the house as: 'First-class family mansion, and about 8½ acres of pleasure grounds and fruit garden. The house, erected under the plans and supervision of Mr. Leonard Terry, is most substantially built of brick, stuccoed, on solid bluestone pediment, forming a noble basement story, large entrance hall, and lobby, with conservatory on the left. *** A wide verandah and balcony, erected on cast-iron columns, runs round the house, the views from which are perhaps unequalled in extent and beauty in the neighbourhood of the city, commanding the bay, shipping, Mount Macedon, and Dandenong Ranges. Glynn’s farm Originally Section 7, Parish of Nillumbik marked Aborigine Reserve in 1866 Crown Allotment 8, Section 7, Parish of Nillumbik, County of Evelyn, Certificate of Title Volume 4095, Folio 818.835, approx. 93 acres purchased by Joseph Panton in 1881 for £1/acre and known as Panton’s Point. By 1924 owned by S.S. Sergeant and called Riverswood. Sergeant commissioned Edna Walling to design the garden. In September 1929 the property was sold at auction by Mortgagee’s sale. Described as well built, brick, tile roof, Attic Villa containing downstairs 7 good rooms, bath, scullery, inside lavatory, etc. Upstairs 2 bedrooms and sleep out. Outbuildings compromising of brick and weatherboard wash house, stables, workshop, feed room, cow bails, large G.I. Hay shed, etc In January 1931 Riverswood property was proclaimed a sanctuary for native game for the entire year. A private swing bridge crossed the river at Pound Bend was known as Pearson’s bridge after C.W.K. Pearson who bought Riverswood in the early 1930s. The bridge was swept away in the December 1934 floods. Riverswood was sold by C.W.K. Pearson at auction on 25 November 1936. Described as a beautiful farm home of 93 acres and over one mile of River Yarra frontage, modern brick residence, lovely garden, rich river flat pastures, model poultry farm. The fine brick home was destroyed on Black Friday (13 Jan.) 1939. It was still a ruin when the Evelyn Evans purchased Waikowhane above Riverswood in 1940. The Glynn family purchased the Riverswood property in 1941 from Robert and Emily Hannon. Their son Kenneth Patrick Glynn inherited the property and he set about clearing the land during WW2 selling wood. Prior to marriage, Kenneth was living alone on the farm in a house he had built from whatever was available. He used the bluestone foundations from the original fine brick home. He met and married Honora Elizabeth Drew in early 1945 and their daughter Anna grew up on the farm. It was compulsorily acquired by the Board of Works in 1976 who then rented the house out in the 1980s. The property was transferred to Melbourne Parks and Waterways in 1996. Waikowhane was a pretty timber house built on top of the hill on 50 acres above Riverswood by retired nurse Jessie MacBeth. (This would be at the intersection of Glynns Road and Overbank Road where the big water tank is now situated on what was once James Orford’s property.) It was also destroyed Black Friday and she rebuilt it from the plans living in a caravan on site supervising the build. It was almost complete when she died May 1939. The property was bought by Evelyn Evans (a city girl) and her estranged husband in 1940. She had two sons, one only 9 months old at the time. It was a timber house with no power or water connected. The Ewen Cameron family bought Waikowhane in 1957. They had to evacuate when the 1961 bushfires swept through. The house was saved by Matcham Skipper. The Pipe Bridge at Greensborough is a significant and highly visible part of the system. It was constructed to carry the wrought iron aqueduct pipes over the Plenty River. The use of wrought iron meant the pipes were 75% lighter than cast iron, with the bridge construction reflecting this innovation. Photograph of the Maroondah Aqueduct pipe bridge at Greensborough. The Pipe Bridge is 210 feet long, divided into 4 spans. The main girders are light lattice 11 feet deep and 11 ft 4 inches apart. The bridge carried two wrought iron tubular mains, 53 inches in diameter, supported at intervals by cross girders and chairs, placed between the main girders. The bridge is carried on braced cast-iron columns, 18 inches in diameter, set on concrete foundations, with a clear headway of 20 feet above the Plenty River. From Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward: In 1888, John Leek, a trainer, owned Lot 15, measuring one and three quarter acres, in Booran Road, north side between Glen Eira and Neerim Roads. The land backed onto the Caulfield Racecourse Reserve. NAV was £45. In 1890 Leek built for his residence, a ten roomed brick house on the site. NAV was £200. Leek was the owner/trainer of "Ingliston" who won the Caulfield Cup in 1900. Upon the horse's death in 1901, Leek is understood to have defied tradition by spending £20 on boots for the "ragged urchins in Bourke Street" instead of "shouting" at the bar. By 1899, the property was owned and occupied by Alfred Merrill, a dentist and was known as "Andover". NA V had decreased to £ll0. By 1910, Leslie Macdonald, a gentleman had purchased the property and renamed it "Moidart". In 1910-11 Macdonald sold it to John Robertson. The property had extensive wood stables on its north-east boundary and several other outbuildings. The house continued to be described as "Brick, ten rooms" as it was in 1926 when it was owned and occupied by John Arthur, a managing director. The land measured la.2r.31p. and had a NAV of £235. Nine people lived there. In 1926, Arthur also owned the adjoining Lot 16. Other racehorses of note, known to have been stabled here include Sobar, Havelock, Proud, Future and Lord.Victorian Heritage Register https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/13532 What is significant? Lord Lodge is a thoroughbred racehorse training complex adjacent to Caulfield Racecourse, established in 1890. The area immediately around the racecourse has been associated with horse racing activities and businesses servicing the industry since the development of the racecourse in late the 19th century. Lord Lodge was named by the present occupants after the champion racehorse Lord who was stabled there in the 1950s. In the early 20th century the property was known as 'Andover' and subsequently 'Moidart'. The site consists of a single storey brick Italianate villa, jockeys' quarters, stables and open day yards with direct access to Caulfield racecourse from the rear of the property. The villa of 10 rooms on bluestone foundations was constructed in 1890 by John Leek, a horse trainer who purchased the newly subdivided land in 1888. The house has many Victorian Italianate or Boom Style features although it is more modest than many villas of its style. It has an asymmetrical facade with a faceted bay window and a prominent central tower with low pitch pyramidal roof that provides a clear view of the racecourse. Other characteristic features include stilted segmented arches, bracketed eaves, stucco wall finish and cast cement ornamentation. A room has been added on the north-facing verandah in sympathetic style and finish. Internally the rooms are substantially intact with original marble fireplaces and intricate ceiling roses and cornices. An entrance toward the rear of the southern side of the house is said to be where the stable hands, jockeys and other staff lined up for their meals. In the southeast corner of the property, backing directly on to Caulfield racecourse, is a substantial late Victorian timber stable, probably constructed in the 1890s but first appearing on the property title in 1910. The stable has 12 stalls, a loft and brick pavement and jerkin head roof form with varnished pine-lined ceiling carried on a chamfered timber frame. It has an original roof lantern. The doors of the stalls are not the original sliding doors but swing doors obtained from a barn at Epsom Racecourse in Mordialloc prior to demolition. Outside the gambrel roof has fretted barges but the building is otherwise utilitarian. Timber throughout the stalls has been worn by chewing and rubbing of horses over the century of its use. In the southern half of the property are open day yards where the racehorses are kept during the day. The red brick, single storey jockeys' quarters to the rear of the villa were probably built around 1950. A small brick, possibly late Victorian structure on the eastern boundary thought to have originally been a gardening shed, has been converted to a stable of two stalls. Modern concrete brick stables fill the northeast portion of the property. At the front of the property two Moreton Bay Figs (Ficus macrophylla), probably planted in the late 19th century, provide shade for horses in the day yards. In the 1890s John Leek sold the property, relocating his training facility to one of the newly established racecourses at Mentone or Mordialloc (Epsom). By 1899, the property was owned and occupied by Alfred Merrill, a dentist, who named the property 'Andover'. In 1910 it was purchased by Leslie McDonald, a gentleman, and renamed 'Moidart'; sold in 1910-1911 to John Robertson; and again in 1926 to John Arthur, a racehorse owner. The Victorian Amateur Turf Club purchased the property in the late 1930s and since this time has been leased to racehorse trainers. It is unclear whether the property operated as a training facility between 1899 - 1926. Several notable trainers and jockeys are associated with Lord Lodge. The best known is Arthur 'Scobie' Breasley, Australia's most successful jockey who was apprenticed to trainer Pat Quinlan at Lord Lodge (then 'Moidart') from 1928 - 1935. Breasley rode winners of the Caulfield Cup in four successive years 1942-45 and again in 1952. John Leek, the original owner of Lord Lodge trained Ingliston, the 1900 Caulfield Cup winner. The memorial stone of the UMFC in Church St. Richmond was laid in December 1868. The bluestone church, which seated 308 people, was designed by G.R. Cox and built by John Wright. It was opened in May 1869. By 1890 subsidence in the foundations of the building had caused the bluestone façade to bulge dangerously outwards and a new façade of red and white brick was constructed. The memorial stone of the new façade was laid on 7th June 1890. The Old Colonists' Hall is built on the site of the former Mining Registrar's Office, and the bluestone was reused in the foundations. This image was reproduced in the 1887 edition of W.B. Built in 1869 and opened in 1872 by Bishop Perry In 1988, it was dismantled and rebuilt in Wadonga. Efforts were made to save the building. The foundations needed significant work. Many of its adherents were deeply distressed by its loss.
