A double deck horse drawn tram with single saloon. drop ends, stairs, longitudinal seats, sliding doors, wheels of cast iron, hand brakes - see notes. Originally built by Duncan & Fraser in 1887. Rebuilt by BTPS 1991. From the BTM Fleet page on the website: Built in 1887 by Duncan and Fraser for the Ballaarat Tramway Company Ltd. as a double-decked horse tramcar. One of eight cars which ran as trailers behind electric trams at times of heavy patronage, after takeover and conversion of the horse lines by the Electric Supply Company of Victoria Ltd. in 1905. Withdrawn in the late 1920's when the body shell became a residential outbuilding locally, until retrieved in 1985. Green and cream tram with the SEC Logo on the side and the number 13. It is outside the shed of the Ballarat Tram Museum located near Wendouree Lake and the Gardens. Tram 13 is a single truck with drop ends and an open California combination. It was built in 1915 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. In 1928 it was used in Geelong and then transferred to Ballarat in 1936. When the Ballarat tramways closed it was donated to the Lake Goldsmith Steam Preservation Society and returned to Ballarat on loan in 1983. Tram 14 was a small green and cream single truck tram operated by one person. Entry was by the narrow door at the driver's end of the tram. People would pay their fare to the driver. There was no conductor. Pink advertisement for the Bendigo Bank was on the side. The tram is photographed outside the Shed at the Ballarat Tramway Museum. Tram body was built in 1915 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. Sold to the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. Ltd. in 1927 and ran in Geelong. Transferred by the State Electricity Commission to Ballarat in 1936. It was the last tram to be overhauled by the SEC. Tram was built in 1916 and delivered to the Hawthorn Tramways Trust. it was taken over by the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board in 1920. In 1930 it was sold to the Electric Supply Company Co. of Victoria for use on the Ballarat tramway system and given the number 28. It was converted to an early form of one-man operation using barrier rails and aisles. The State Electricity Commission took over the tramway in Ballarat in 1934. In May 1934 the tram was decorated for three days to celebrate the Coronation of King George VI. In 1938 more changes were made to the appearance and it was painted dark cream and green. This eight wheel tramcar was built 1914 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. It was sold to the State Electricity Commission in 1951 for use on the Ballarat tramway system. The tram was altered to its present form in 1953 to permit one-man operation. It was modified to operate as a one man tram but limited use due to industrial bans. A conductor was used in Ballarat. In 1954 the tram was decorated for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Ballarat Tramway Museum purchased the tram in 1971. It was the last tram to run when it ran from Sebastopol to the depot on 19 September 1971. Tram 39 was built in 1914 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. In 1951 it was sold to the State Electricity Commission, Ballarat, and renumbered 39. When the Ballarat Tramways closed in 1971, it was sold to Lismore Lions Club and displayed in a recreational reserve. Ballarat Tramway Museum purchased the tram in 1976 and converted it into a museum display and souvenir centre. This was used until the new Museum building was opened in 2022. These photos show the process of loading the tram onto a truck in Lismore and bringing it back to Ballarat. The date of this was 9 May 1976. All photographs were taken by the donor, Campbell Duncan. The tram body was built in 1916 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. It ran as Tram 75. In 1927 it was sold to the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. Ltd and ran as Geelong Tram 29.The State Electricity Commission tranferred the tram to Ballarat in 1936 and it became Tram 14. Ballarat Tram 26 travelling around Lake Wendouree. This tram was built in 1916 for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust and numbered 5. It was renumbered 111 by MMTB in 1920. In 1930 it was sold to the Electric Supply Company and again renumbered to 23. Passed to the SEC in 1934. Built in 1916 for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust, it ran as Tram No.10. Renumbered 116 by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board in 1920. It was sold to the State Electric Company of Victoria in 1931. The number became its present number 27. The tram continued in service until 1971 when the SEC operated system closed. Digital image of Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT) bogie tram No. 35 at the Burke Road terminus c1914. The tram has the destination of St Kilda Road. Three crewman are standing by the front of the tram - motorman or driver and two conductors. Two conductors were used as the seating arrangements had two full width cross bench seats as shown in the floor plan - see second image. This prevented the conductor collecting fares from all passengers unless they swung to the outside of the tram. Not known whether this was a full time arrangement or for peak periods only.
