It was to be constructed in two stages. Stage 1 was completed in 1973. Stage 2 as designed by Taglietti did not proceed. Instead, alterations were designed in 1992-93 by Ashton Raggatt McDougall Architects (ARM). ... ...Carlisle Street...The Balaclava Road/Carlisle Street line opened in 1913 and was very busy in summer months and on weekends enabling residents in Melbourne's eastern and southern suburbs to travel directly to St Kilda Beach without having to change to cable trams. ...The Balaclava Road/Carlisle Street line opened in 1913 and was very busy in summer months and on weekends enabling residents in Melbourne's eastern and southern suburbs to travel directly to St Kilda Beach without having to change to cable trams. ...Photograph shows two maximum traction bogie cars with one drop end, numbered 22 and 23 on Balaclava Road at St Kilda Town Hall. Both cars are full and travelling in different directions and both carry an additional destination board reading "Esplanade". Along side one tram are a dozen men, women and children riding bicyles or in a passing motor car. Three uniformed tramwaymen are also shown. The Balaclava Road/Carlisle Street line opened in 1913 and was very busy in summer months and on weekends enabling residents in Melbourne's eastern and southern suburbs to travel directly to St Kilda Beach without having to change to cable trams. Trams 22 and 23 were part of a four car set, built for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust in 1912 in Adelaide and based on a designed used there. They were sold to the Hawthorn Tramways Trust in 1916, eventually classified as O class then sold back to Adelaide in 1927. Their bulky design earned them the names 'Zepplin' and 'Dreadnought'. His first store in Balaclava was at 145 Carlisle Street. Following a fire on 25 February 1907, the store was moved to 159 Carlisle Street. The store was later run by his son Francis Joseph Fogarty who moved it across the road in about 1950, though the registered office remained 159 Carlisle Street. Edmund Parkes was one of the best educated banks in Victoria. ...Edmund Samuel Parkes (1834-1887) married Nancy Penrose Lawry (1831-1886) in 1855 in London. They travelled to Australia aboard the Damascus in November 1867 with their six children and other relatives to enable Edmund to take up an appointment as inspector of the Bank of Australasia. Following his appointment as superintendent of the Bank of Australasia in 1876, he purchased a Remington typewriter for the bank and employed Australia's first woman bank employee, Mary Swifte, to operate it. Nancy died in 1886. Edmund died in a train accident in 1887.
