The Sunbury Football Club, known as 'The Swifts' was formed in 1897 and the early matches were probably played on Munro's which was a stretch of land bounded by Evans, Barkly, O'Shanassy and Shields Streets. Later land adjacent to the railway line, now Sunbury Shopping Centre was where football was played until Clark Oval was opened in 1953. Since then it has been the town's main sporting venue and the site for the annual show and other events. Th members of the Sunbury Football team were photographed in the former sports ground that was on railway land bounded by Evans and Macedon Streets and the railway land. The photograph was taken at one of the early Sunbury Shows. In April 1900 saw the establishment of the Sunbury Horticultural Society but it was in September 1915 that the first Sunbury Show was held at the Corporation Sale Yards in the form of a horse parade and sale. In 1917 the Show was held at the Old Reserve which was adjacent to the railway precinct. Today the Sunbury Show is held in October at the Clarke Oval. The first recorded football match played injured Sunbury was in 1881 when Sunbury played Keilor on Munro's Ground which was located on land bordered by Barkly, Shields, Harker and Evans Streets.By 1892 Sunbury Club officially became known as 'The Swifts". A later game was recorded in 1895 but it wasn't until 1897 that it became a recognised football team at a meeting convened by W.A. Eadie in the Royal Hotel. Later football matches were played on railway land in Evans and Macedon Streets. In 1949 the Shire of Bulla Council passed over 26 hectares of Crown land for a new recreation ground, now the Clarke Oval. Since that time that site has been Sunbury's home ground. The school badge was hand-painted on a wooden Art drawing board by an unknown student after the Higher Elementary School had been upgraded to a High School in 1948. The latin inscription, "Acti labores lucundi", can be freely translated as "Finished work is pleasant." The school badge, with its stalk of maize was designed by Clarke Cowell who was in the first Senior Class at Orbost Higher Elementary School in 1912. Clarke Cowell followed teaching as a career and was the first head teacher of the Corringle School, No. 4909, which opened on Feb 7 1921 and operated as a half-time school with the Marlo School No. 3433.Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district . It is the sole senior educational institution. This uniform is representative of its history.A wooden rectangular plaque with a hanging wire attached to the back. It has an oval-shaped painted school emblem on a stained wood background. Around the circumference are the words ORBOST HIGH SCHOOL painted in yellow with the motto ACTI LABORES LUCUNDI. T. & C. Clark & Company Limited was based at Shakespeare Foundry in Wolverhampton England and was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark. The company grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton and were pioneering in the manufacture of enamelled cast iron cookware and sanitary wares. The company's product range included thousands of items, both domestic and industrial. T. & C. Clark were pioneers in the use of enamelled cast ironware, after taking out a patent in 1839 guaranteeing their products to be free of lead or arsenic. The company became the largest employer in Wolverhampton employing between 600 to 700 people.The item is significant as it was used as a domestic kitchen or camp fire item used to cook food safely without the concern that the metal may contain lead or arsenic as earlier cooking utensils had. "BALLARAT, Fri: Two days before Christmas Mr F. C. Clarke, of Victoria st, received from his son, Sapper F. Clarke, a message conveying Christmas and New Year greetings, and the assurance "all well." Mr Clarke has now been officially advised that his son died of wounds in New Guinea on December 24." Mountain Grange was the property owned by Thomas Hand. It stood where the Kalorama Oval now is. The land around Mountain Grange was used for community gatherings for cricket and picnics etc.The adults and children in this photograph are not named but would have been local residents. Kalorama Memorial Reserve was once the location of 'Mountain Grange', the property of Thomas and Eliza Hand. The pine tree pictured was reputedly planted by Mrs Eliza Hand in the 1880s. Thomas Hand died in 1888 when he was thrown from his horse on Inverness Road. The photograph was taken in 1974 and the pavilion pictured is no longer there. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph showing a large pine tree behind a pavilion. James Young migrated to Australia in 1887 with his daughter Lily, living first at Yarrawonga and then moving to Linton. For reasons that are not known, he changed his surname to Clarke. He ran a small tobacconist and barber's shop in Sussex Street near the Shire offices. (An advertisement for "J Y Clarke, hairdresser & tobacconist" appeared in the first edition of the "Grenville Standard", 12 April 1895.) He died in 1917 and is buried at Linton. His daughter Lily married William Murrell (son of Ambrose and Mary Murrell). This large 10 gallon boiler would have been used over an open fire or placed on top of coals to boil clothes clean. They were first made in England during the 1700's and onwards.They were shipped to Australia and other British Empire countries to be purchased by early settlers. A large antique black oval cast iron Boiler Pot with small curved lifting handles for holding it on both sides. There is a large cast moveable carrying iron handle with a bend at the top for hooking onto an 'S' shaped hook or rod to hang over an open fire. This handle is attached on each side to thick iron loops.
