Lt-Col Ian Mawson, Deputy Comdt 1RTB, gave the opening address. ...At a historic gathering of past and present Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC) nurses were in attendance at the dedication and unveiling of the RAANC's badged door at the Solider's Chapel at Kapooka, the first dedication of a corps door there. Col Coralie Gerrard, DNS-A spoke of the history of nurses in the Army. The first nurses served with troops in 1898 with the Australian Nursing Service (ANS) being formed 1902. Nurses have continued to serve in all wars where Australians have served. Lt-Col Ian Mawson, Deputy Comdt 1RTB, gave the opening address. Guests included nurses who had served in Australia and overseas in WW2 as well as those who served in Japan, Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, Singapore and New Guinea between 1946 and 1980 and in recent UN deployments. It was a wonderful occasion for past and present nurses to meet and talk about their Army nursing experiences. The community newspaper provided an alternative view during an era when newspapers still dominated and played a significant role in the sharing of local information. L to R: unidentified technician, CPL Col ...The first photograph was probably taken at a media event announcing the introduction of the Heidelberg Speedmaster printing press in late 1990. LTCOL Rene van den Tol was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1989 to 1991. Partly obscured behind the CO was Mr Bruce Reid, who was the newly elected federal member for Bendigo. The media event was held in Wayzgoose Hall, Lithographic Squadron’s new purpose-built building constructed to house the Speedmaster 102 printing press. The remaining 29 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. Refer to Item 6291.6P for more photos of the Open Day.The first photograph was probably taken at a media event announcing the introduction of the Speedmaster printing press at Army Survey Regiment Fortuna Villa, Bendigo in late 1990. Soldiers without borders: Beyond the SAS, a global network of brothers in arms Book Ian McPhedran Harper Collins Australia ..."What happens to the elite, close-knit soldiers of the SAS after they leave the tight world of the military? For some, there are highly paid jobs as trigger men with security companies in the worlds war zones and trouble spots. But for many, unexpected adventures unfold. Some go on to establish and lead major corporations or to advise multinational companies about risk where the commercial stakes are high. Some join foreign defence forces, training new elite special forces in unusual places. For others, life takes a different twist. They become top government advisers and even hardened criminals. Most sinister of all is the shadowy world of black ops - risky, rewarding and adrenaline-driven jobs that governments always deny. But wherever they are, the former elite soldiers are never far from each other, bound in an exclusive global network of brothers-in-arms."-Index, ill (plates col, b/w), maps, p.364.non-fiction"What happens to the elite, close-knit soldiers of the SAS after they leave the tight world of the military?
