Neville Mirvane Bunning was born in Rockhampton, Queensland in 1902. He was home taught until 1916 and then was a boarder at Geelong Grammar School, Victoria until 1921. He then returned to Queensland and worked on the family property. During this time he built ceramic kilns and taught himself the required skills for ceramiic production. During the Depression he went to Sydney and set up an artist's studio. In 1934 he went to England and studied, wrote and did commission work. Achieving local success and had work acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Neville returned to Australia and became a lecturer at East Sydney Technical School until the outbreak of the Second World War. He joined the RAAF. After the War he joined the staff of the Art School of the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries until his retirement in 1964. Neville Bunning formed the Ballarat Artist's Society, a group which sponsored art and invite guests to speak to students and the public of Ballarat. He wrote a weekly column in "The Courier", the local newspaper where he encouraged people to be more aware of the trends in art. His works were included in the 1988 Australian Bicentennial Exhibition. His sympathetic understanding of Aboriginal culture is recorded in a letter written in 1937 to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Neville Bunning continued painting during his retirement. His last major exhibition was held at the Golden Age Gallery in Ballarat in 1983. He worked on the Kiewa scheme from 1948 to 1950 doing overhead line construction and maintenance plus electrical design and drawing work. It is a collection of articles, works and memoirs written and compiled by James Henry Walsh, an early resident of Ballan, that have been edited for publication by James Turner. The work was commissioned by the Friends of the Library, Daylesford and funded by Arts Victoria and the Australia Council. Poemscape: a physical anthology is a much loved site specific installation work commissioned by the Friends of the Library, funded by Arts Victoria and the Australia Council, made by Daylesford resident Patrick Jones in response to his interests in the provision of public food, the development of locavore sensibilities and the rethinking of economies of material accountability and regard. Betty was encouraged to enter a project for the "Young Farmers" by illustrating a book. She won first prize for Victoria and the book was exhibited at the Royal Melbourne Show. This resulted in Betty attaining a Manual Art Teacher's Studentship which she completed at Wangaratta Technical School. Here she learned many new skills ranging from garment design to ceramics. She also attended Melbourne Teachers College. Betty created many decorative banners, the first being for the Australian section of the World Scout Jamboree in 1948. Over her long career she was to create many other banners and commissioned work including these badges for the Australian Antarctic Research Expedition in 1982. Betty’s great body of work included landscapes, millinery, ceramics, and a bronze sculpture of her husband Vern Barberis who was a fellow schoolteacher and represented Australia as a weightlifter, winning a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. She also illustrated several books and had exhibitions in many galleries including in Albury. Peter Minko is a ceramic artist based in Bendigo, Victoria. His hand-thrown works using a fine porcelain body are usually a combination of burnished and bisque-fired ith hand-painted metallic oxides and sometimes fired a third time to apply gold or platinum to the design. He began potting in 1977 and has built a strong reputation as a porcelain artist, with work being commissioned by the Federal Government for official presentations and his designs being used by Australian Fine China for a range of dinnerware.
