In 1987 (Dec. 5—Dec. 15), the Eltham College Concert Band did a tour of China. Upon return, a VHS tape was made of the tour as a memento of the occasion. Sufficient material of useable quality and content has remained to allow two DVD’s to be produced by tape to disc transfer. Disc 1 runs for 94 mins. and Disc 2 for 77 mins. Original tape ran for about three hours so not all that much has been lost. In general the video work was by Mr. Brian Maclean, year 12 Co-Ordinator at the college and is very professional for the video equipment of the day. There is a full ‘cast list’ at the end with credits for all band members and those who organised it all. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph of Lucky Star and Digby Richards along with members of their concert party, leave the Champa Museum in Danag following a visit during a rare break in the concert tour. Concerts were a fundraiser that the Association for the Advancement of the Blind first introduced in 1900, based upon the experiences of the RVIB concert tours that Tilly Aston had participated in whilst attending the school. Initially not as successful as hoped, they were re-introduced in 1911 and soon became a regular fundraiser for the fledgling organisation. The Erard Concert Grand Piano was moved into the University of Ballarat 1870 Founders' Hall in March 1996. The piano was originally brought to Australia in 1904 for a brief tour by pianist Paderewski. Known as the 'Prince of Pianists' Paderewski selected the piano for his tour in preference to all other makes. The piano was later sold, and had little use since the concert tour. This article provides a biographical overview of William Northcott, an accomplished English-born cornetist. Born in Devonshire, England, in 1811.He began studying music at age nine under the renowned cornetist Norton. He demonstrated rapid progress, leading to early opportunities in military bands. He joined the British Navy as a young teenager, initially aiming to serve on the St.Jean d'Acre during the Crimean War. He played the cornet aboard the Princess Royal and later the St. Jean d'Acre, becoming popular among officers and crew. William participated in significant events such as the Crimean War and the fall of Sebastopol before returning to England in 1856. He Continued naval service on the "Conqueror" (Mediterranean cruise, 1856–1859) and then the "Nile," where he served as leading cornet player and soloist. Accompanied the Prince of Wales on a tour of Canada, earning high praise for his performances.International Musical Caree. rAfter ten years in the British Navy, traveled to Australia to join his family and founded the Northcott Sandhurst Brass Band, introducing popular "sacred concerts." Moved to New Zealand, briefly led a band in Christchurch, and attempted gold mining before returning to music with a successful concert tour. On route to America, organized a concert in Honolulu and was hired by the local government to form and lead a band, which he developed into a respected ensemble. William arrived in San Francisco in 1871, performed as a soloist in a major benefit concert for Chicago fire victims, and gained popularity on the West Coast. Later he moved to New York City, performing with prominent groups and artists, including Henry Tissington and Mme. Parepa Rosa, and joined Carneross' Minstrels. Early Engagements (1873–1875):Solo cornetist at Congress Hall, Cape May, under Simon Hassler (summers of 1873, 1874, 1875). Performed with the San Francisco Minstrels (fall/winter 1873–74) and at the Chestnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia (fall/winter 1874). Centennial Exhibition (1876):Specially engaged to perform for several exhibitors, attracting large crowds (20,000–30,000 people daily).Played for major companies (Hook & Hastings Organ Co., Knabe Piano Co., Stieff Piano, etc.) and with the Centennial Band. Demonstrated remarkable endurance by performing multiple daily sets throughout the event.Subsequent Engagements (1877–1879): Soloist for the Permanent Exhibition (1877–79). Performed with renowned violinist Ole Bull in 1879 and impressed critics with technical feats, such as playing "America" in four octaves on the cornet.Concert Company Leadership (1891–1893): Managed and performed with his own Concert Company, recognized as one of the finest musical organizations in the country. The company featured top vocalists and instrumentalists, giving over fifty concerts in Philadelphia alone. Introduced an original comic opera, "Henrietta; or, the Power of Music," to diversify the repertoire. Northcott's career is marked by international travel, military service, musical leadership, and a reputation for both performance excellence and band organization. In 1906 Patrick Mylon started a passenger transport service in the Albury-Wodonga border area with horses and cabs. His son Jack went into business in the late 1920s, and his grandson Bernie joined the firm early in 1970. When Patrick started with the horses and cabs, each cab carried eight passengers and he always had two horses per cab. As the business expanded, Mylons used a range of buses and coaches including Reo, Chev and Bedford vehicles. Mylon Travel Centre opened at 152 High Street, Wodonga on 21 November 1992. It allowed Mylons to extend their service for holidaymakers. Mylon’s staff could help with all holiday needs, including answering questions about destinations as well as booking tours, accommodation, concert seats and express coach bookings. The new Centre had a computerised reservation system with direct link-up for world-wide reservations. During more than 100 years of service to the Wodonga region and beyond, Mylon Motorways received many awards for Excellence and tourism. This music was used by Frank Wright who had been tutored by Percy Code. Frank Wright won the Australian Open Cornet Championship using this music, and won the gold medal for the highest mark in the British Colonies. Percy Code was born in Melbourne on 03 July 1888. He started learning the violin and piano at the age of eight. Three years later his father, Edward, started tutoring him on the cornet. His first competition was in October 1902 in Ballarat's South Street Competitions. Percy Code was Musical Director of Ballarat City Brass Band from 1913 until 1921. He was Frank Wright's teacher. Code apparently lived in a large house just west of where St Peter's church (Ballarat) now stands. Percy Code toured the world as principal cornet with the 'Besses o' th' Barn Band.' He returned to Australia in 1912. Frank Wright at one stage rode his pushbike from Smeaton to Ballarat for lessons. Leaving Australia for America in March 1921 Percy Code obtained an appointment as trumpet soloist for the 70 piece San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He returned home two years later and became bandmaster to the Prahran City Band in 1925. From 1938, as part of Australia's Sesqui Centenary celebrations, Percy Code conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the ABC orchestral concerts in Sydney Town Hall. His career with the ABC came to an end in late 1951 due to poor health. Percy Code died on 17 October 1953. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The school's high profile music program has run successfully for 10 years since Mr Neil Berry, who taught students to play brass instruments, started the first concert band. Further advancements were made under former classroom teachers, Judith Curphey, who is National Artistic Director of the Australian Girls' Choir and Jan Constable, organiser of the Melbourne Youth Music Council. Annual band tours, enjoyed by the students, also help the music department's excellent retention rate.

He performed on the University's historic Erard Grand Concert piano on stage in Founders Hall, describing it as "absolutely amazing.' The instrument was 93 years old and hadn't been played for more than eighty years. An audience of 500 were entertained with pieces by Schubert and Bach for the first half of the program and Waltzes, Mazurkas, and Polonaises by Chopin after the interval. Tim Haymes is the character Smith, Karissa Clarke plays nurse Jane Oliver and Ross Larkin plays soldier Daniel Brady. A feature of the show is Lola's celebrated Spider Dance which was acknowledged many years ago by the crowd throwing gold nuggets onto the stage.
