Malta Cup Donor: F. J. Corder, High Commissioner of Malta Deed of Gift: Yes The race was originally raced on handicap by all yachts on the RBYC register. This was later changed to a Combined Division Race on PHD handicap then again changed to IRC handicap. The trophy was won by Barton Harney three consecutive times and in accordance with the deed of gift the trophy was retained by Mr. Harney. In 1975 Mr. Harney re-donated the trophy to RBYC and a new deed was written allowing for ballasted yachts on the RBYC register to compete on a course of approximately 12-15 nautical miles. E. A. Franklin Memorial Trophy (Cup) Donor: Edward Alfred Franklin Deed of Gift: Yes The trophy was originally donated by past Commodore E. A. Franklin and awarded to the International Star Class. He was Commodore in 1947/50 and again in 1953/55. After his death in 1962, his son Rae Franklin changed the deed of the gift to become the E. A. Franklin memorial trophy and with the decline of the Star Class was for a short time then awarded to the Soling Class, and then to the E22 class. However, it seems to have been awarded to the Dragon class instead and perhaps the Spooks Franklin Trophy which is awarded to the E22 replaced it. First Winner: Leander, R. J. A. Linacre Memorial Trophy Donor: J. H. Linacre Deed of Gift: Yes The trophy was presented by J. H. Linacre and the Linacre family in memory of their father Jim Linacre who was a past Commodore and one of the founders of the Jubilee Class of yachts in 1935. Edwards Cup Donor: Eli (Dick) Edwards Deed of Gift: Yes The trophy was originally donated to the Victorian Yacht Racing Association for a round-the-bay race of not less than 100 nautical miles, for yachts of a length of no longer than 30 feet and no less than 20 feet. The trophy is currently raced during a Club Marine race and is awarded to the winner of Division 1 on PHD handicap. The race is held on the same day as the Secours Trophy for Division 2 and the Allee Cup for Division 3. Eli Edwards was one of the early members of the Port Melbourne Yacht Club. Artemis Trophy (Sculpured Head) Donor: Marion French Deed of Gift: Yes Marion French donated the trophy in memory of her husband Bill French, who started sailing at SYC in cadet dinghies then at RBYC in 16 foot skiffs, then building several other yachts and finally in the Division 3 yacht Artemis until his death in 1988. The trophy is named after their yacht Artemis and awarded to the winner of a Division 3 race. In 2003 it was changed and awarded to the winner of the Winter Pursuit Series, then again changed and awarded to the winner of Saturday Pursuit Aggregate Series for October to May. Frank Hutchinson Memorial Cup Donor: Lyndsay Halliday Deed of Gift: Yes Frank Hutchinson was a member of the Brighton Sailing Club as early as 1912 and became Commodore in 1941/44; he was also made an honorary life member in 1953. He was a World War I veteran and for many years conducted the clubs’ Anzac Day Services, always wearing his Light Horse Captains’ Uniform. He died in 1964 at the age of 80. The trophy was originally donated for a single-handed race, however this was changed in 1993 when it became a two-handed race and then became part of the ORCV two-hand series. Valhalla Trophy (Tray) Donor: Fred Moylan and syndicate Deed of Gift: Yes (see attachment) Fred Moylan, Even Macgregor and Ken McBriar were all past Commodores of RBYC and together with Malcolm McEachern were the owners of the yacht Valhalla. Valhalla was launched in 1910 as a cruising yawl, then in 1911 was rigged as a cutter for racing. She was 40 feet long and built for Percy Hedges, a past Commodore of RBYC. Horace Petley was also one of its crew in the early years. The Valhalla trophy was donated when the syndicate finally sold their boat and is awarded to the winner of the Division 2 summer aggregate series on PHD handicap. Charles Peel Trophy Donor: Peter Mitcheson Deed of Gift: No Peter was the nephew of Charles Peel who was one of the designers of the Jubilee class yacht first launched with Freydis BJ1 in 1935. Peter also at one time owned the Jubilee yachts Freydis BJ1 and Sylvia BJ2. Sylvia was destroyed in a collision with a ship at the mouth of the Yarra River. Alan Robinson Memorial Trophy (Cup) Donor : Keith Farfor Deed of Gift: No Alan Robinson was the navigator on Keith Farfor’s yacht Super Star. He was killed in a car accident on the banks of the Yarra River. The race is a combined division race from RBYC to the QCYC. Costello Cup Donor: H. C. Costello Deed of Gift: No The trophy was originally used in 1983 for a Spring and Summer Sunday Series. The trophy was then not used for a number of years when in 2004 it was used for a Saturday Winter Pursuit Series with extras being allowed.
