Dennis was the son of Ioannis and Ioanna-Giannoula (Lekatsas) Varvarigos who arrived in Melbourne from Ithaca in 1914 and owned The Palace Tea Rooms, adjacent to the Palace Theatre in Bourke Street, where Dennis grew up. Dennis was a very active member of the IPS and served as president from 1960 - 1965. This book has written by a local Warrnambool resident Dennis O’Keeffe. He was a folk-singer and composer and collector of folk songs. In this book he documented for the first time the full details of the origins of the song, ‘Waltzing Matilda’, especially its connections with 19th century Warrnambool. It contains much original material. This book is significant because it was written by a well-known Warrnambool resident and tells the full story of the origins of the song, Waltzing Matilda, including its beginnings in Warrnambool in 1894. The book is signed by the author. This is a soft cover book of 294 pages. The front cover has yellow and white lettering with an image of a bushman camping in the bush with a smaller version of the same image on the back cover. Information on the book is on the back cover. The book has a preface, 17 chapters of text, a bibliography, notes and an index. There are several black and white photographs and illustrations in the book. There were many different musical bands in existence throughout the 20th century in Warrnambool, from Warrnambool City Band to Pipes and Drums as well as trumpet, mouth organ, and military bands. They officiated at many social events and parades and celebrations which were held at the time. The Camperdown Chronicle lists the Dennis King Banjo and Mandolin band as performing at such events around the 1950’s. No information could be found on the owner of this instrument, Sylvia Broomfield.An object which relates to social events in the district.001056.1 Banjo mandolin. Eight stringed instrument with dark wooden frame and pig skin front screwed in with metal surround. The Eighth Eltham Community Festival was held 16-17 October 1982. Although the Society’s parade entry did not win a prize this year, it was considered highly successful from a participation point of view. Despite some uncertainty as to just who was coming, members and friends kept appearing at the assembly area. As in the past years, members from the Victorian Folk Music Club brought their instruments along and really added to the occasion. This year concentrated on a rural theme with a tractor/trailer combination. Peter Bassett-Smith supplied the tractor for towing the float designed and assembled by Joh Ebeli on Dennis McKay’s trailer. The closing stages of the parade were marred by heavy rain. The cold driving rain provided a special problem for Peter Bassett-Smith in driving his tractor home to Kangaroo Ground as he had to choose between standing up to warm his hands on the exhaust and having his tractor seat flooded. This memorial was built in 1922 by the Mortlake Shire Memorial Committee (Chairman Cr W. T. Allen) in memory of the forty two district men who died from injuries received during WW1. Financed by public subscriptions, it was designed and built by Messrs Wooles & Carpenter of Warrnambool at a cost of four hundred and fifty pounds sterling and unveiled in the same year by the Shire President Cr G. L. Dennis who presided at the ceremonyt and invited the Premier of Victoria the Honourable H. S. Lawson to unveil the memorial in the presence of a very large crowd which consisted of the Mortlake Brass Band and local schoolchildren. A memorial fountain was original originally sited at close to the gates of the Mortake State School and was unveiled by the citizens of Mortlake to perpetuate the memory of the late Cr Thomas Montgomery. The fountain was to be erected before the death of Cr Montgomery but as he died before this happened it became a memorial. Made of bluestone and Apollo Bay and Ceres stone it was designed by Messrs Wilcox Bros of Geelong. Cr Dennis as President of the Mortlake Shire Council was the first to turn on the water and take a drink from the fountain which was later removed to the front wall of the Mortlake Swimming Baths and then just recently to the east wall of the newly constructed bluestone toilets in Market Square.Thomas Montgomery served on the Mortlake Shire Council for thirty eight years, and was a local businessman who owned the general store known as Thos Montgomery as well as being a partner in a similar store in Terang known as Montgomery and Bradshaw.AD 1922 ERECTED BY THE CITIZENS OF MORTLAKE TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF THOMAS MONTGOMERYthomas montgomery memorial fountains -
