The word Planisphere (Latin planisphaerium) was originally used in the second century by Claudius Ptolemy to describe the representation of a spherical Earth by a map drawn in the plane. This usage continued into the Renaissance: for example Gerardus Mercator described his 1569 world map as a Planisphere. The word describes the representation of the star-filled celestial sphere on the plane. The first star chart to have the name "Planisphere" was made in 1624 by Jacob Bartsch. Bartsch was the son-in-law of Johannes Kepler, discoverer of Kepler's laws of planetary motion. A significant item of celestial mapping used by marine navigators This particular item was made and used in the first quarter to half of the 20th centuryPlanisphere of northern hemisphere, with canvas bag. Planisphere consists of a circular star chart attached at its centre to an opaque circular overlay that has a clear elliptical window or hole so that only a portion of the sky map will be visible in the window or hole area at any given time. The chart and overlay are mounted so that they are free to rotate about a common pivot point at their centres. The star chart contains the brightest stars, constellations and (possibly) deep-sky objects visible from a particular latitude on Earth. The night sky that one sees from the Earth depends on whether the observer is in the northern or southern hemispheres and the latitude. A Planisphere window is designed for a particular latitude and will be accurate enough for a certain band either side of that. Planisphere makers will usually offer them in a number of versions for different latitudes. Planispheres only show the stars visible from the observer's latitude; stars below the horizon are not included. A complete twenty-four-hour time cycle is marked on the rim of the overlay. A full twelve months of calendar dates are marked on the rim of the starchart. The window is marked to show the direction of the eastern and western horizons. The disc and overlay are adjusted so that the observer's local time of day on the overlay corresponds to that day's date on the star chart disc. The portion of the star chart visible in the window then represents (with a distortion because it is a flat surface representing a spherical volume) the distribution of stars in the sky at that moment for the Planispheres designed location. Users hold the Planisphere above their head with the eastern and western horizons correctly aligned to match the chart to actual star positions. "Made in Germany for GEORGE PHILIP & SONS Ltd. The Anzac Book was the finest 'trench publication' produced during the Great War and was an instant bestseller when first released in 1916. Created by soldiers under enemy fire and in extreme hardship, the illustrations, stories, cartoons, and poems were intended as a Christmas and New Year diversion for soldiers facing a harsh winter in the trenches on Gallipoli. The way these young men powerfully captured their felt experiences and struggles in the trenches had a huge emotional effect on readers back home in Australia. From Desk to Dugout explores this particular moment in Australian literary and educational history and its intersections with the war at Gallipoli and the history of ANZAC.world war 1914-1918 - campaigns - gallipoli, gallipoli campaign - personal narratives

Hard Cover Book. History of The Great European War Set 1 Vol 10 Author: W Stanley Macbean Knight Publisher: The Caxton Publishing Company Ltd Clune House, 161 Surrey St, London W.C. Printer: The Standard Publishing Co. 100 Flinders St, Melbourne. Date: Various Volume Subscription Releases 1914 to 1920 Further Information: Red pictorial cloth gilt-lettered boards, each volume illustrated with a coloured frontispiece, black-and-white photographic plates, and fold-out colour maps of various fronts depending on volume(e.g. the Serbian Retreat, the Italian front etc.). Note there are two sets of this publication in the Flagstaff book collection.non-fictionThis set is a contemporary and popular narrative history of WWI, written and published while the war was still happening; the preface is dated 1914, but volumes were issued serially as the war progressed, meaning later volumes covering 1917–18 and the peace were released several years after the first. This is a common format for the period — compare rival serials like The Great War (Hammerton & Wilson) or Collier's The Story of the Great War — publishers issued 'instant history' in subscription parts to a public hungry for authoritative-sounding accounts. The volumes in this set cover the following topics during the First World War: Vol. I — Causes and Effects (1914): Its aims are to explain the political and diplomatic background to the war — the alliance system and the July Crisis — with the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. Vol. II: Continues into the opening campaigns of 1914 (per Internet Archive, 'Vol 2 of 10', contemporary account). Vol. III: Descriptions note it as continuing the story of the campaign of the Allies and their mid-war campaigns. Vol. IV: Covers 1916 and the ongoing 1915–16 campaigns; this volume contains a fold-out colour map of the Serbian Retreat and one of the Italian front, featuring the Balkan and Italian theatres of war. Vols. V–VI: Continue the general campaign narrative through 1916–17. Vols. VII–VIII: Cover the later war years, focusing on 1917–18. Vols. IX–X: These volumes cover the war's final phase and the Armistice. Publication of the last volumes continued into the early 1920s, covering the peace settlement at Versailles and its aftermath.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, book, the history of the great european war vol 1 set 1, the history of the great european war, caxton printers
