In 2016, the Cardinia Shire Council decided to replace an existing bus shelter outside the Emerald Community House (ECH) - this shelter had been decorated with mosaics - with a bus shelter compliant with the current safety regulations. This caused a strong protest by people who did not wish to lose their loved bus shelter. Protesters, supported by the ECH, completed all-night vigils and garnered considerable publicity. Eventually, the Council agreed that, although the planned bus shelter would go ahead, the mosaics from the original shelter would be saved and a shelter approximating the original would be built close to the ECH. The Emerald Football Club, also known as the Bombers, first formed in 1905. It was one of the earlier clubs in the Mountain District Football Association, which later merged to become the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League. Initially, their colours were blue and white, followed by green and gold, until they changed to the red and black we see here—which are still used today. The Bombers have claimed many premierships at numerous levels over the years. Des Gallenti played (in his estimation) 100-150 games for Emerald Football Club.This record captures a historic picture of former Emerald Football Club player Des Gallenti, who is seen in the photograph wearing Emerald Football Club's vest. Silver Springs Lodge was owned and managed by prominent Emerald residents, William and Olive Hamilton, during the 1940s and 1950s. The guest dwelling occupied stunning real estate along Emerald Lakeside. Guests were offered a variety of entertainment and access to activities including pianola, radio, swimming, tennis, riding, golf, car trips and home cooking. Weekly tariffs ranged from ₤4-10 and ₤4-15. It is believed the postcard was produced by the Valentine Publishing Co., inferred by the company's unique identifier — the letter 'V' followed by numbers — which appear on the obverse, as well as the word "Valentine's" which is printed on the reverse. This inscription is akin to examples of Valentine Publishing Co. postcards in other collections, such as the Kew Historical Society Inc. and Phillip Island and District Historical Society Inc.The record holds very strong historic significance as it speaks to the transformation of the Dandenong foothills into a popular tourist destination in Victoria. Particularly, the Silver Springs Lodge was an early tourist enterprise in region which had previously been dominated by industries of timber, gold and horticulture. The record is particularly significant for how it documents this important metamorphosis of Emerald into a key location for tourism. Furthermore, the postcard offers some research potential into the commercialisation of housing and its wider socioeconomic impacts on the local community, particularly in our current climate of short-term holiday rentals like AirBnB and Stayz.Black and white rectangular postcard printed on card. The Rose Stereograph Co. was established in the year 1880. The firm's founder, George Rose Clune, began developing photographs from his father's shoe shop located in Prahran, Victoria. George would travel to the Dandenong foothills to sell his photographs to picnic parties, thus creating a connection to Emerald and surrounding districts. The Rose Stereograph Co. first began producing stereographs. After this medium lost popularity, George switched to postcards — referred to as the 'P' series, such as this example — in 1913. The firm continued to print postcards until 1967, after which they switched to machine-manufactured coloured postcards provided by an external supplier. The Emerald Infant Welfare Centre was opened in late 1940 and is said by Graeme Butler in the Centre conservation management plan 2022 to have 'possibly been designed by Cowper Murphy & Appleford, designers of the Emerald Country Club house.' The Centre which is still in operation today, is held as an example of the governments desire for the expansion of healthcare at the time and is holds great historical significance within the community of Emerald and surrounds. Frederik Vogel who was a mechanical engineer, bought a scale factory in 1888, and created the brand name "Seca" which he had copyrighted in 1897. Goods created by Seca were being manufactured in Germany and being used on a global scale. Scales such as the item described were upon the fist products being distributed from the company.This item holds significance as it reflects the longevity of the Emerald Maternal & Child health care Centre. An original Commonwealth Savings Bank of Australia Depositor's Passbook belonging to the Emerald History Museum. This passbook was issued 15th February 1980 and features UV signature technology.Methods of banking developed significantly between the 1970's and 80s in Australia with the credit card, black light passbook signatures and later the passbook-less card based accounts and EFTPOS. While a very few passbook accounts may still exist, this item is a great reminder of the days before the convenience we now enjoy. Emerald Museum was established as a formal collecting entity in 1969 based at the Emerald Hall, acquiring material by donation from local community members. In 1988 the former Shire of Sherbrooke with the help of State Government purchased the only remaining section of the former C. A. Nobelius & Sons Nursery (VHR place details ID/H2285). By the late 1980s the collection had been relocated to a shed on the former nursery. This collection included written records of the nursery’s operations that had been maintained throughout its ownership by the Nobelius family and L. Linton. However in the damp shed, the collection’s condition deteriorated. The nursery records received extensive conservation treatment to restore their condition and are now held as a complete collection at Emerald Museum. After the Emerald community lobbied extensively for a place to house their local heritage, the Shire agreed to construct a purpose-built facility within the former nursery where it has resided since 1993.
