A folder containing six editions of The School Paper (numbers 738, 740, 741, 743, 744, and 746). The folder itself is made from textured, patterned beige paper and has a blue and red plaid-print label in the centre. The inner covers of the folder are made from a textured, dark grey paper, and there are remnants of masking tape on their edges. The papers have been attached to the folder via several pieces of string. The School Papers were distributed to school students monthly from 1896 until the late 1960s as supplements to the Victorian Reader. Bernard Charles Cronin (1884–1968), novelist, was born in England and came to Australia in 1890. After winning a scholarship to Dookie Agricultural College, he worked as a jackeroo in Victoria before moving to a cattle farm in north-western Tasmania. This experience and setting furnished several novels including The Sow's Ear (1933), the tale of a bitter forced marriage in a rural setting.Bernard Cronin was related tot he Ferris family and lived for a time with them at the Lemeah Guest House on Molbulk Rd. This plaque is believed to have been made by Gus Ryberg when he was a student at Emerald State School circa 1920. Gus Ryberg (1911-2000) worked tirelessly to promote Emerald's history. He was pivotal to the establishment of the Nobelius Heritage Park and the Emerald Museum.This object was made by a person who was significant in the preservation of Emerald's history.Processed timber 3 ply. Timber wall plaque featuring a kookaburra and a magpie sitting on opposite ends of a boomerang shaped tree branch. Each bird is coloured to show wings, beak, eye and tail. Prayer/hymn book owned by Ron Nicholls who was a member of St Mark's Church, Emerald, from the time he moved to Emerald with his family until he left to join the RAAF early in World War 2. From 1938 to 1940 he was an assistant propagator. The letters of reference are written by (1) Ronald Lloyd, Vicar of St Mark's, dated 16 November 1936; (2) and (3) F.G. Wood, foreman propagator, Nobelius Nursery, dated 19 August 1940 and 17 April 1941. The letter from Harcourt State School, dated 14 June 1943, is addressed to Emerald State School seeking information about Ron Nicholls, with whom he has been corresponding while Nicholls was in New Guinea with the RAAF. The foolscap sheet contains a list of names of Emerald residents included in correspondence from Ron Nicholls' mother during the war (see below under 'Other information'), and further details about Ron's life. The hand-written remnant was written by Ron Nicholls to his mother from Emerald when he was a child. The news clippings describe (1) a children's fancy dress night held at Emerald School; (2) a coming of age party held for Jack Hirst; and (3) injury received by Geoffrey Kennedy of Macclesfield, when gored by a bull.
