This Carte-de-visite (CdV) taken by renowned Wangaratta based photographer William Edward Barnes previously belonged to the donor's grandfather, Daniel Mullins who was a Police Officer stationed at Glenrowan soon after the Kelly gang siege. Today, the siege has become an important part of Australian culture and Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang (comprising of Ned Kelly, Dan Kelly, Steve Hart and Joe Byrne) has become ingrained in Australian history and mythology. A CdV is a sepia toned photograph mounted on card and is generally of a small size. This particular style was first patented by Andre Adolphe Eugene Disdéri (1819-1889) in 1854. In 1857, the CdV was introduced to England and after photographs of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family were taken using CdV in 1860 the popularity of this method reached a peak. In this photograph, eight men stand along the railway line near Glenrowan. The photo dates to shortly after 1880 and references the attempt by the Kelly gang to derail a police train in June 1880 on those very tracks. Ultimately, this plan failed and the police train was never derailed. Ned Kelly and the Kelly gang took their final stand at Glenrowan which has been immortalised through Australian popular culture.This photograph is part of the Burke Museum "Kelly album" which includes a significant collection of photographs and artefacts connected to Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang. Ned Kelly and his gang have become ingrained in Australian popular culture and thus many museums, art galleries and private collections house material connected to the Kelly story which allows the events and people to be researched and interpreted. Artefacts and photographs pertaining to the Kelly gang are particularly valuable for Australian museums. This particular photograph is significant for its connection to Wangaratta based photographer William Edward Barnes and to the Glenrowan Siege of June 1880. Taken at an unknown time, after the siege at Glenrowan, this image depicts eight gentlemen standing about the railway line near Glenrowan. This is a reference to the Kelly gang's plan to derail a train which would barrel up to Glenrowan after news reached Melbourne that Aaron Sherritt had been shot by Joe Byrne in the Woolshed Valley. This image is important for its artistic information that it can provide about the Kelly story and the fashion and streetscape of Glenrowan.This sepia coloured Carte de Visite is attached to yellow cardboard. The obverse of the photo depicts the railway line near Glenrowan around 1880s. The rails are positioned in the centre of the image and are made on an incline of earth. In the foreground are three men, two standing next to the rails and one slightly off to the right of the image. The reverse of the image is yellow card and contains printed and pencil writing. The printed writing is in the centre of the card. It reveals that the photographer was William E Barnes from Wangaratta. The ladies are wearing finery and corsages which suggests that this may have been a post-marriage celebration following the wedding of Lillie and James Morgan. Their marriage certificate records the date as 26th of April, 1969.This is a photograph of social and historic significance, being part of a sub-collection of material that provides a snapshot of the type of individuals involved in the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild and the activities carried out by that organisation. This instruction book was donated with our collection's Wertheim sewing machine accessory box. The box contains 12 accessories, the instruction book and the receipt for the purchase of a Wertheim sewing machine. The receipt was written on July 23rd 1891 by the Wertheim distributor in Melbourne, Hugo Wertheim. His business was the Wertheim Sewing Machine and Hapsburg Piano Depot, trading at 173 Williams Street, Melbourne. The purchaser was Mrs Burrowes from Burrumbeet, Victoria, a district northwest of Ballarat. She paid £6-6 (six pounds and six shillings) in cash. The receipt was signed by H. Wertheim and the other signatory looks like John A. Cherry. Hugo Wertheim (1854-1919) was an agent for his father’s cousin Joseph Wertheim, a well-established sewing machine manufacturer in Germany. He was born in Lispenhausen, Germany, and migrated to Melbourne in October 1875, where he opened a merchandising business at 39 Flinders Lane East. He returned to Germany in 1885 to marry Joseph Wertheim's daughter Sophie Emilie. The couple came back to Melbourne, and Hugo quickly established a substantial business selling sewing machines, bicycles, pianos and other mechanical devices, under brands such as Wertheim, Electra, Planet, Griffin and Hapsburg. He exhibited at agricultural shows and in 1901 at the Pan American Exposition, Buffalo, United States of America. One of his staff was O. C. Beale, who later set up his own piano business in New South Wales. Hugo continued to own 25 per cent of one of Beale's companies, which became Wertheim's Queensland business. In 1908 Hugo Wertheim opened a piano factory in Richmond, Melbourne, aiming to produce 2000 pianos and player pianos a year, predominantly using Australian materials. In laying the foundation stone, Prime Minister Alfred Deakin observed that “few men with such opportunities for a life of ease would have embarked on such an enterprise” Hugo died of chronic hepatitis in 1919 at his home in South Yarra. His eldest son, Herbert Joseph (1886-1972), continued the business. The piano factory closed in 1935, becoming a Heinz food processing plant and in 1955, GTV Channel 9 studios and offices. The Wertheim Sewing Machine Company – Joseph Wertheim (1804–1899) founded the company in 1868 in Frankfurt, Germany. At this time Joseph was the Frankfurt city delegate for the Democratic Party. At its height, the Wertheim factory employed approximately 650 workers. The company used a trademark of a dwarf holding a hammer which is known to have been used until at least 1925, however in 1909 a Star of David was also registered. In 1870 a Wertheim subsidiary was formed in Barcelona, Spain. The business imported and sold complete machines, including the English Jones machine. Locals began calling the sewing machines “las rapidas”, and the business became known as “las casa de las rapidas”. In 1915 production began of a totally manufactured Spanish Wertheim machine. Wertheim in Germany continued manufacturing machines until 1932 when the Wertheim family fled to Spain. Despite converting to Christianity from Judaism, they feared the political unrest in Germany during that time. Wertheim Spain became Rapida SA and was then the sole manufacturer of the Wertheim machines. The factory was managed by Karl Wertheim under the alias Carlos Vallin. The item is part of a donation that connected to domestic life in 1891 during the Victorian era. It is significant for connecting the Melbourne distributor of Wertheim sewing machines, Hugo Wertheim, to Victoria’s northwest district where the purchaser lived. This small, slim case was manufactured to contain reading spectacles in a secure but yet "manageable pocket or purse" environment. It was manufactured to contain reading glasses that would not exceed 12mm in thickness. The product was targeting the "professional" reader ie. accountant, lawyer, business and property managers. Because it was made for a "eyesight" specialist to contain "prescription" reading spectacles the quality had to be of a higher level than cheaper "off the shelf" ones. This case was made and used in the late 1800's and early 1900's.This case, for spectacles, holds a significant position in that it points to a time in history when rural Australian families required to travel long distances to obtain professional "eyesight" treatment which, on the whole, were only available in the capital cities (in this case Melbourne). In the pre 1960's, the greater the distance from capital cities for Australian rural folk to seek professional medical, dental, nose ,eye and throat specialists the greater the time involved resulting in the greater expense. This "isolation" brought about increased costs not experienced by city residences. The quality and durability of this case was a pre-requisite for the Kiewa Valley based resident.This slim spring lid spectacle case has a body of light steel over layered by a fine skin dyed(dark brown) leather coating. The inside, of the case, has a 1mm lip opposite the hinged end (to secure the reading spectacles within the case). The inside is fully covered by a "royal" purple felt (to provide the spectacles with a scratch free enclosure).At the outside base in gold lettering "H.B. William Ingram with possibly his wife Pamela Thomas and family members. William is second from left with pipe, the others unidentified. The family lived in Birmgham, England. William, a baker died in 1905. William and Pamela had six children; William George Grove (1861-1939), Elizabeth (1865), Evan Thomas (1867-1956), Joseph (1868-1934), Louis (1870-1941) and John (1872-1958). John Ingram learnt his trade from his father but following a quarrel with his father, he ran away and worked his passage to Australia as a ships baker. His elder brother Evan was already in Australia living in Malvern. It was here that he met Ada Key. John and Ada were married in Fremantle, Western Australia. They travelled to England then Cape Town, a family already started. They returned to Melbourne and in 1901 bought land at Research where he worked to establish an orchard and worked at night asa baker in Eltham. According to the Australian War Memorial, "The Red Cross maintained a policy of ensuring that comfort and entertainment for the wounded in hospital was onging and stated in its Gazette of December 1917 'Wherever they are, our boys will have a reminder on Christmas Day that the thoughts and sympathy of their people in far-off Australia are with them.' The boxes were usually packed in Australia and contained 'a pipe, tobacco, cigarettes, chocolate, playing cards, match-box, handkerchief and an attractive card, Australian in nature, conveying greetings from the Society.' (Gazette no 7, January 1918)." This particular example dates to 1921, after the war had ended. This machine was made in Baden, Germany, for the Ward Brothers of Melbourne, who imported machines from various manufacturers and had them branded with their Ward Brothers decals. This machine is most likely dated before 1911, when the Ward Brothers became two separate businesses, as one of the decals appears to have been deliberately removed. The case is made in an attractive design and the machine itself has decorations that are pleasant to the eye. Even the metal cover of the folding handle has a swirling design on it. The machine has the added bonus of a ruler along the front base. Many sewing machine manufacturers in Germany produced their machines specifically for export. A company could mass-produce its machines and give the same product several different brand names, according to their overseas buyers. There was a huge market for domestic machines as it enabled tailored clothing to be made in households at a fraction of the retail prices. Ward Brothers began in Australia in the late 1890s and early sewing machines sold by them had the three brothers on their decals. In 1911 the brothers divided into two separate firms, one operating on his own, the other two remaining together, and all still operating in Melbourne and at first still using the name Ward Brothers.This sewing machine is one of two hand-operated Ward Brothers machines in our collection that were made in Baden, Germany, and the only one that has had the three Ward Brothers on its decal, and that has front and rear slide plates. This machine represents the early domestic market for sewing machines, making it possible for the everyday homemaker to produce fashionable garments and linen ware that was affordable. The owner of this machine could work at more than one location as it was portable and did not require a large space to set up. The machine is associated with the well-known Ward Brothers of Melbourne, who sold imported sewing machines that were branded with their own name. Sewing machine, hand operated, in wooden case. The machine is painted black with gold decals, and front and rear slide plates. The wooden base of the machine has an inlaid ruler. The case has curved sides and shaped ends, decorative woodwork on corners, an inlaid diamond pattern on top, and a folding metal handle. Accessories are included. The decals include doves, inscriptions and swirls, and there is a map of Australia with two portraits of men. The machine was made in Baden, Germany, for Ward Brothers, Melbourne. The donors of the fur stole come from a local family in the Warrnambool area. They believe the fur stole is around 60 years old. The stole belonged to the donor’s mother, now deceased, who wore it to local balls and dances as an accessories and maybe for warmth too! The donors believe the fur could have been purchased in Melbourne or Toorak. The fur is likely to be from the Mustelidae family, which is the largest family of carnivorous mammals. They inhabit all continents except Australia and Antarctica. This species includes the weasel, badger, otter, marten, ferret, sable, mink, stoat (ermine) and wolverine. The fur is thick and dense close to the skin, indicating that it is the winter coat of the animal. This fur collar is representative of fashion accessories in Warrnambool and District in the 1940's - 1950'sFur stole, ladies; comprising two animals with heads and legs, stitched together to form a stole. The fur is believed to be the winter fur of animals from the mustel family and is not as soft as rabbit fur. The first head has only the nose, the second head has nose and eyes. The heads are dark brown, each animal has a dark brown stripe the length of its fawn coloured back. Tails are dark but not as dark as the head. Holeproof Hosiery was a Milwaukee, Wisconsin textile firm that was founded in 1901.With extensive advertising the brand name became recognized worldwide. The business produced men's and women's hosiery, underwear, lingerie, and men's pyjamas. Holeproof Hosiery began making nylon hosiery in January 1940, starting production on 8 of its 230 machines. The hose were made of a synthetic yarn composed of derivatives of coal and iron manufactured by Du Pont. In the late 1920s, a successful hosiery manufacturer, Staley & Staley Ltd, started making ladies hosiery under licence from the Holeproof Hosiery Company in Milwaukee, USA. The company went public in 1929 and opened the first Holeproof mill at Brunswick, Victoria in 1930, becoming the first manufacturer to produce and market Australian-made self-supporting socks. During the 1930s, Holeproof revolutionised the Australian market by promoting their products as a sought-after fashion accessory. This box of matches was up until the 1980's the major source of lighting "small" fires, mainly for cigarettes, pipes (smoking), BBQs, gas/ kerosene heaters and "clearing" rural shrub by small fires. It was not until flint based battery and lighter fluid (hand held lighters) were introduced did the need for "matches" (a more dangerous application of instant fire starters) become relegated to a lower level "demand" item. The limited quality supplied in a box could also not compete with hand held gas and "lighter fluid" lighters. Box of matches belonged to the "yesteryear" fashion accessory's most important list. Matches had become obsolete for the major stream of users as cheaper, easier to use and longer lasting "cigarette" lighters were produced.This match box of Australian make and vintage in origin, was originally manufactured by a British Match Box Company (Bryant and May in Bow London), which expanded to the Australian "Colonies". The Australian subsidiary was at Cremorne, Melbourne. It was typical of goods, which had their "founding fathers" based in "the Mother Country" (England). The early settlers in the Kiewa Valley found these matches an important necessity for not only rural life but also for the recreational "smoko".This small box of "safety" matches has an inner "drawer" which can be slid open to reveal the "match" sticks. The small bowl shaped phosphorous at one end of a "match" is the fire starter(phosphorus) which when lit would "flare" up and provide a small flame. George Gotardo Foletta (1892-1973), hosiery and knitwear manufacturer, was born on 30 January 1892 at Northcote, Melbourne, eldest son of Victorian-born parents Henry Gotardo Foletta, a stonemason of Swiss extraction, and his wife Gertrude, née Bright. Madame Weigel who migrated to Melbourne in1877 with her husband Oscar; began publishing in 1878 and distributed paper patterns of the latest fashions, throughout Australia and New Zealand, She and Oscar became the first commercial manufacturers of paper patterns in Australasia, and to publish Weigel's Journal of Fashion (1880-1915) and Madame Weigel's Journal of Fashion (1915-1950). Madame Weigel had an enormous following of women who used her patterns across the generations, and across the life cycle from babies to 'matrons'. Madame Weigel died in 1940 aged 92 years. This sturdy, deep hat box has been carefully constructed to give the contents utmost protection in the roughest of travel conditions. At the same time, attention to detail and quality of materials makes the box an attractive, desirable and useful piece of luggage. The supports inside the hat box show that the hat’s brim dipped at the front and back in the popular 1920s Homburg or Derby style. The hat box was likely to have been purchased, complete with its fashionable hat and personalised with the initials ‘G.M.’. The five shipping labels on the hat box tell that the owner traveller overseas with it on more than one occasion. The owner had first travelled with the shipping line Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Company, and may have been one the first Australian passengers in 1932, as the remnant of label on the base reads Sydney. The owner later voyaged under the company’s new name of P & O. and travelled from at least one of the voyages from Melbourne to London The square label, with “P & O” and red printed “M” in centre of circle, refers to alphabetical organisation of baggage by surname, connecting the owner ‘G.M.’ to the owner’s voyage with P & O. The P & O shipping line’s early beginnings started with the partnership of London ship broker Brodie McGhie Willcox and Scottish sailor Arthur Anderson in 1822. The partnership was joined by Irish shipowner Captain Richard Bourne in 1835 and they began operation as the Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Company with a service between London- Spain - Portugal. In 1932 the company expanded to include Australia with its passenger services departing from Sydney; in 1840 the company was incorporated. After various take-overs of other shipping lines and businesses, it operated under the name P & O. JOHN BRUSH The hat box was made by Australian saddle designer and maker, John Brush, Sons & Co. Brush began his saddlery trade in Roma, Queensland, His designing process included consulting with the men who rode and worked the horses. He was described in the Sydney Morning Herald of December 15, 1897, as a leading Sydney saddler, well known and reliable, with every kind of English and Australian saddle on view. John Brush established his business in 1840, operating from 371 George Street Sydney. A catalogue from that era jointly advertises John Brush (371 George Sty Sydney) and Butlers & Brush (432-4 Queen Street Sydney), both under the name of Edward Butler & Co. Pty. Ltd. The catalogue included saddlery, harness equipment, riding wear and travel goods, and strongly promoted the Wienkek made saddles, which he distributed Australia wide. John Brush, So & co. advertised its ‘new’ address in 1887, as 403 George Street Sydney. In 1898 Brush made a side-saddle for a customer, a design popular with gentlewomen of the era. The business was still operating over 100 years later, producing a catalogue in the 1950s.This early 20th century hat box is significant for being one of a kind in our Collection. Its fitted design shows the shape of the hat, dating it from the 1920s men’s fashions. The hat box is significant for being a high quality hat box made in Sydney, Australia by prominent and successful early colonial saddler and leather goods business, John Brush, Son & Co. The labels on the outside of the hat box are also significant, representing the prosperous lifestyle of an Australian traveller who purchased quality goods and cared for them. The traveller was able to depart from firstly the Port of Sydney and later the Port of Melbourne. Hatbox, oval shape, brown leather, strong, sturdy construction, six pieces, and metal lock on base. Wide lid, then tapers to a narrower base that has a red leather trim. Brown velvet fabric lining inside and covers some accessories. Other internal accessories are trimmed with plain red paper and blue and white striped paper. The lid has two attached leather tabs and a leather handle and underneath it has a drawstring liner and oval, gold-lettered maker’s label. The internal oval box has a leather retention strap and brim support. Separate moulded brim support is included. A detached leather strap with catch is inside the base. Inscriptions are stamped on the lid, printed on the maker’s label, attached as printed paper labels to the lid, sides, and under the base. Maker is John Brush, Son & Co. of Sydney.
