Kew Historical Society IncHeadwear - Brown Fur Hat, 1960s
... Brown Fur Hat......fur hats...Fur hats were a necessary accoutrement for fashionable women who wore furs. ...Circular, brimless women's fur hat....Headwear Brown Fur Hat ...Fur hats were a necessary accoutrement for fashionable women who wore furs. Typically, the fur hat might be purchased from the furrier to match the colour and often the pelt of the coat or stole, rather than from a milliner. Hats, like coats and stoles were often dyed to achieve uniformity of colour. Tastes in the colour of furs also changed over time, so hats, coats and stoles could be updated to match prevailing tastes. Until the 1960s in Australia, there were many furriers, who usually brought from Europe experience in identifying fur types. With the decline in the fur industry, these skills are noticeably scarcer in Australia today. The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. Most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women. There are however a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.Circular, brimless women's fur hat.Nilheadwear, women's hats, fur hats, furriers -

He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. His initial searches were in Belgium and Holland.(http://www3.slv.vic.gov.au/latrobejournal/issue/latrobe-84/t1-g-t7.html) Etching showing a bearded man with fur-lined hat and jacket. Pure fur felt hat manufactured by John Bardsley & Son P/L specifically for Vic Rail. ...The Port of Echuca railway platform (next to Echuca Wharf) was an integral part of moving goods from the paddlesteamers to the train carriages heading to Melbourne. Numerous railway sidings existed given the volume of goods, meaning carriages were shunted regularly. While there is no known recorded official hat as a 'Shunters' hat, such hand-crafted items weren't unusual given the often singular, long-term nature of employment during the 20th and 21st centuries.
