The subject item was made by G. Pearson and Co Ltd. of the Hope Works, Sheffield England. This company was established in 1854. By 1914 the company was manufacturing many differing types of edge tools, joiners' tools, forks and garden tools. Their specialities were hay, manure and coke forks, punches, armourers' tools etc. In 1938 the Company was styled F. G. Pearson and Co (Sheffield) Ltd and they were still making plane and other sharp edged blades as late as 1957, but by the 1970s they had gone out of business.A significant company based in Sheffield England and making tools of all types and exporting same to various countries around the world. A very unique screwdriver or turn screw possibly used by a Ship Builder, Railroad Engineer or other tradesman in need of a long reach. The handle shape or pattern indicates it could have been made by G Pearson later F G Pearson Sheffield at the Hope Works. Two copies of a seven page pamphlet titled the Elsternwick Club 1898-1984, written by E E Hackett, on the history, development and founding of the Elsternwick Club. The file also includes a five page typed manuscript of the pamphlet. Also included in the file are the Honorary Membership certificates of F Campbell and A J E Campbell, awarded for the 1986-1987 season of the Elsternwick Club. The file also includes one page of typed notes on the history of the Elsternwick Club with accompanying handwritten notes, dated 1981 and signed by Betty Snowball and C Pullman. The file also includes a one page printout of an email from Jan Brooks to the Glen Eira Historical Society, dated 19/10/2009, regarding the history of the Elsternwick Club, her family’s connection to the original club owners and general information about her family. Aesthetic: Display showing embossing and shape especially if in good conditionClear brown glass bottle with base consisting of 2 long sides (front and back) and 2 shorter sides at each end joined by two even shorter sides (as if to cut corners). Tapered sharply to form a neck and lip and then a screw top opening. Embossed on base. Used for pills or reviving salts.Base: Common Seal: 'A' with 'G' and 'M' inside top and bottom respectively. The pamphlet includes a timetable for the day’s events. 3/One six page pamphlet for a film festival organised by the Caulfield Film Society as part of the City of Caulfield Centenary Celebrations. The pamphlet includes a programme for each of the four days of the film festival, 14/10/1957, 17/10/1957, 23/10/1957 and 25/10/1957. The pamphlet also includes information about the Caulfield Film Society regarding their formation, their values, their manifesto and their officials. 4/An eight page programme for the centenary Thanksgiving Service on 13/10/1957 featuring prayers and hymns. 5/Two copies of a pamphlet regarding City of Caulfield Centenary Celebrations from 13/10/1957 to 05/11/1957 created by H.G. Book - Royal Visit 1901 - HRH The Duke of Cornwall and York
This file contains three items about the visit of Prince George Duke of Cornwall and York (later Prince of Wales, later Geroge V) to Victoria in 1901: 1/A book ‘Addresses to (His Royal Highness) HRH The Duke of Cornwall and York and to His Excellency the Governor-General the Earl of Hopetown from the Municipalities of Victoria' containing copies of the addresses from the municipalities to George and the Governor-General on the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia, and the replies of George and the Governor General. The book also contains individual cards on each municipality, including the Shire of Caulfield. The cards contain information such as date of incorporation and population, and the signatures of the Mayors, Councillors and Town Clerks of the cities, towns and boroughs, and the signatures of the Presidents, Councillors and Secretaries of the Shires. Principal Frank Lord gave an ANZAC Day address called "Live Every Day as an Anzac Day". The address started with "Our opportunity is with the children. If we failed i nthe past, lest us begin again now. You are young, and let it be your resolve to live every day as an Anzac Day, and achieve some of the things for which the men of two wars have laid down their lives. Living your days with an air of kindness and decency, you will set an example to the children, and when a country's children are made happier and finer, it will follow that the county will be a happier and finer place." Mt Lord referred to theseven and a half months' occupation of Gallipoli, and the tenacious clinging by Anzac troops to their square mile of territory. Illness, disease and death came to the confined area, but there also came a spirit of self-sacrifice and charity, and a courage whoich scorrned death and won for the Australian troops world renown. Strong men broke under the conditions, but their comrades carried them on, and the prevailing spirit among men was that the had dedicated ther lives to ensuring a decent society at home, free of tyranny. For the achievement of this, they were prepared to die. It became characteristic that when things were at their worst, men were at their best. Discipline did not come from above on Gallipoli, for the men stuck their own standards of discipline, and stuck to them. ... After the 1914-18 war, it was surprising to find head teachers who did not know children of deceased and disabled soldiers in their schools. All teachers should acquaint themselves with this knowledge, and seek assistance from children who are eligible for help from the Repatriation Department. For those pupils who do not come withing the scope of Repatriation, teachers might secure the required help from the Teachers; R.S.L. sub-branch, the Carry-on Club, for from Government Scholarships. Tool - Object, J.K. Dey & Sons, Mining Safety Lamp, c1967
The Mining Safety Lamp is used in flammable atmospheres, and consists of a wick lamp with a mesh screen enclosing the flame. It was created for use in coal mines, to reduce the danger of explosions due to the presence of methane and other flammable gases, called firedamp or minedamp. J. K. DEY & SONS was established in 1947 and manufactures Safety Lamps, Torches and Carbide Lamps. In 1967 the Mining Authority of India issued approval of the Velox GL5 Flame Safety Lamp ( Kerosene burning ) self-extinguishing type. At that time J.K. From the Argus, Friday 18 July 1879:- SAFETY MINING CAGES. The report of the board on safety mining cages was laid on the table of the Legislative Assembly fortnight The board, which has tested the following inventions Nances, Williams patent, Jackson and Middleton's patent Sesmours patent, Allans patent, and Hassan a patent, reports as follows - 1. That the preponderance of evidence given by miners and others qualified to form an opinion is strongly in favour of the adop-tion of a safety cage for general use in the mines of this colony, provided that a reliable invention can be brought forward, and its practical utility satisfactorily determined 2. That in view of the rapid increase of cage accidents, and supported by the evidence before them, the board are of opinion that some special provision should be made to check such a prolific source of danger as is shown to exist in the working of the shaft and machinery employed for winding purposes. 3. That this check could be imposed by means of such a regulation as that at present contained in the statute, i e -" Every cage used in a mine shall be fitted with special and suitable appliances to prevent its sudden fall down a shaft and also to prevent its coming into contact with the poppet heads." The board, however, consider that mine proprietors should be permitted to exercise their own discretion in the selection of safety cages, but safety hooks and balance catches must be used in connexion with every case 4.
