A letter from Mrs M Ring to the Caulfield Historical Society, dated 14/03/1986, conveying gratitude for the information provided about the house Crotonhurst located at the corner of Hawthorn Road and Glen Eira Road, Caulfield North, and requesting information about the Langdon and Webb families and the property Lirrewa. Enclosed with the letter is a copy of a two page report on the Life of George Frederick Webb. The file also includes a seven page report conducted by Irene Victoria Anderson in 1982 on the history of the Langdon and Webb families and the house Crotonhurst. Elizabeth Avis- Box 1835-1913 was born in Sussex, married William Box in 1854 and arrived in Melbourne in 1855. William’s parents George and Mary Box and his siblings sailed with them. William & Mary at first leased land in the area of the ‘Dendy Special Survey Brighton 1841’ and then purchased the property with the pioneer cottage 1868 & 1869. William & Elizabeth established a market garden and raised 13 children. 1888 they built a larger 2nd house in front of the original cottage. William died in 1902 and Mary sold 9 acres in 1908 to W. .Snowden Anderson – it later became Joyce Park where the reconstructed Box Cottage Museum now stands. After Elizabeth died her daughters Ada and Violet lived on the 1 acre property until 1917 when August Reitman, a potter and monumental mason, leased the house and land. He established his pottery business and purchased the property in 1935. The business moved in 1953 but continued to use the cottage as a workshop/ storeroom until it was sold to Lewis Timber P/L in 1970. Elizabeth & William Box settled in the pioneer Cottage in Jasper Road East Brighton 1868 and established a market garden whilst raising their 13 children. This Cottage was reconstructed in Joyce Park, Ormond 1984 and is the home of City of Moorabbin Historical Society. William Harvie was granted a patent in 1868 for improvements in the manufacture of lamps, lanterns and lenses for ships navigation and signal lamps 1868. Production began at 222 Broomielaw street Glasgow Scotland. Another patent was issued in 1873 for additional improvements to the companies lamps. Records show that in1873 William Harvie was in partnership with Malcolm Graham & Co, grease manufacturers and rosin distillers at 50 Anderson Street Gallowgate Glasgow. It appears around this time the business was transferred to George Moffat of 128 Garthland Drive Dennistoun Glasgow to continue under the same name (William Harvie & Co at premises situated at 100 East John St Gallowgate Glasgow. It is unclear but at some point W T George & Co were one in the same with William Harvie & Co. W T George made lamps with the trade name “Meteorite” and after gaining a patent for improvements to his lamps in 1941 the patent numbers were affixed to his lamps. In the Scottish Post Office annual Glasgow Directory 1900-1902 William Haveie & Co. Ltd is listed with two addresses; 222 Broomielaw and 24 McAlpine Streets, Glasgow. In the early 20th century the business moved to Birmingham until 1983 when the company went into voluntary liquidation after a meeting was held at Newhall Street Birmingham on the 10th January 1983 for WT George and William Harvie. This meeting was for the purposes regarding the insolvency of a company as set out in Sec 294 & 295 of the companies Act 1948 as a result Harvie & Co cease production of their products.An item made by a company that was an innovator of significant improvements in the manufacture of marine signal and navigation lamps during the late 19th and 20th centuries. Lamps made by this manufacturer are now sought after collector's items that are of significant value. Navigation lamp, round ship's lamp with clear glass and a red filter, handle at top, fitted with hinged and catch section at top to service lamp. Bracket at back for hanging lamp item painted red with black handles.Black nameplate is unreadable. The first in 1936 and second in 1948, when he was invited to attend the Centenary of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Melbourne. It was not long after the first trip to Australia, and tours of Canada, the USA and Europe that Sydney MacEwan decided to become a priest, and renounced tempting radio and concert contracts. During the war he was an officiating Chaplin to the RAF Father MacEwan's normal duties as a parish priest . . . John Douglas Todd Tasmanian born in Tasmaniabut lived most of his life in Sydney. As associate artist with father MacEwan, John Douglas Todd, Sydney pianist, is making his sixth tour for the ABC and his second tour with Father MacEwan. He previously toured for the ABC with violinist Jeanne Gautier and singers William Warfield, Lord Lurgan and John Dudley. . . Programme Notes. The Duke and Duchess of York (future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, later Queen Mother) visited Australia in April/May 1927 for the official opening of Parliament House in Canberra. Before leaving Australia they passed through South Melbourne and Port Melbourne on 11 May 1927 stopping for brief civic receptions outside both town halls. The royal couple stood in their open car during both receptions. This photograph shows the royal couple standing in the car with Port Melbourne citizens and dignitaries in front of the town hall. The tall man to the left of the chauffeur is Syd ANDERSON, Town Clerk, Cr William HOWE, Mayor is to the right of the chauffeur with presumably Mrs HOWE next to him. In 1927 the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) visited Australia. The Port Melbourne Council established a Strong Post in St Kilda Road to welcome the royal couple. Standing third and fourth from left Mrs CRICHTON, holding an Australian flag, and Cr J P CRICHTON. The tall man in centre of photograph looking at the camera is S S ANDERSON, Town Clerk. Second from right is Cr William HOWE, Mayor.
