The Kuringgai puzzle : languages and dialects on the NSW Mid Coast /? ...For almost 40 years, Michael Walsh has been working alongside Indigenous people: documenting language, music and other traditional knowledge, acting on behalf of claimants to land in the Northern Territory, and making crucial contributions to the revitalisation of Aboriginal languages in NSW. This volume, with contributions from his colleagues and students, celebrates his abiding interest in and commitment to Indigenous society with papers in two broad themes. ?Language, identity and country? addresses the often complex relations between Aboriginal social groups and countries, and linguistic identity. In ?Language, identity and social action? authors discuss the role that language plays in maintaining social identities in the realms of conversation, story-telling, music, language games, and in education. ?Language and Social Identity in Australian Indigenous Communities? will be of interest to students of linguistics, Indigenous studies, anthropology, and sociology. There are no hallmarks or documentation to indicate provenance or historical significance. This coin purse appears to have a covering made of mother of pearl. Evidence of interest from over 20,000 years ago mark Aboriginal groups in Australia as some of the first people to value the power and beauty of pearlshell, while evidence of Australian pearlshell being taken across the sea to other countries dates back as early as the 1500s. The 1850s-60s saw the beginnings of the Australian pearling industry. Following the popularisation of plastic for items such as buttons the pearlshell market waned in the mid-twentieth century but was soon after began to re-forge in Australia with a new industry of cultured pearl farms. Most of Australian's pearling industry was initially located in Western Australia and off the Torres Strait Islands. The Australian War Memorial notes on their website that many tokens made from mother of pearl were sent home to loved ones throughout World Wars One and Two from the Middle East, England, the South West Pacific, Australia and elsewhere, but that unfortunately provenance such as the manufacture and sale of many of these items is not recorded. The social history objects held in the Burke Museum's collection help to tell the stories of Beechworth's past by showing the social, cultural, and economic aspects of the town's history.A small rectangular purse with silver edging and half clasp, covered in white and cream coloured shell (mother of pearl?)A01154burke museum, social history, accessories, mother of pearl, nacre, australian industry -

However, there is a common point of confusion in Australian botanical bibliography regarding the "volumes" of this specific work. To understand what Volume 1 and the other three volumes are about, and how they differ from each other in the four-book set, it helps to look at exactly how Mueller’s project was published. Volume 1 represents Mueller's highly detailed, beautifully illustrated standalone success covering the Thalamiflorae. It differs from the subsequent "volumes" because Volume 2 was abandoned as a rare, 40-page unfinished fragment, and Volumes 3 and 4 were never written, as Mueller pivoted to assist with the broader Flora Australiensis. The Plants Indigenous To The Colony of Victoria Vol 2 Author: Ferdinand Mueller Publisher: John Ferres Government Printer Melbourne Date: 1864-1865 Further Information: Blue patterned front cover and spine with gilt lettering to spine and Library labels non-fictionThe Plants Indigenous to the Colony of Victoria is a landmark botanical work by Australia’s prominent colonial botanist, Baron Ferdinand von Mueller. Front cover "Rivergums" by Roger Webber. Back cover Ernest Buckmaster and Rober Webber painting en plein air.(Back cover) "Since the 1880s, Ringwood has quietly nurtured a vibrant artistic spirit. Drawn to its rolling landscapes, bushland reserves, and meandering streams, students from the National Gallery of Victoria once ventured here to capture its beauty on canvas. As the neighbouring suburbs of Warrandyte and Eltham forged reputations as artistic hubs, Ringwood developed a creative character of its own, shaped by art groups, schools and talented individuals. This book celebrates that legacy through the lives of seventy-six artists who have connections with the Ringwood area. More than a history, this is a portrait of a community alive with creativity." Acknowledgements: "Many artists provided material on their artistic career which was appreciated. In some profiles, it may have been possible to write a separate book on the artist's life, therefore condensing it down to a page or two was difficult. Specific credits are given after each chapter but a special thanks to Gareth Syvret and Mattie Young (Maroondah City Council), Liz Seaton, Linda Besser, Kay Scott and Les Baxter. In some instances, an image has been used from public websites, yet the copyright was not provided nor readily available.
