These sheets were issued with the book ‘The Practical Man’s Book of Things to Make and Do’ published in the 1950s by the Sun News-Pictorial newspaper. The authors were James Wheeler and W. Shum. The sheets provide simple drawings as a guide to making house additions (Summer House etc) and furniture (table desk, newspaper stand, book shelves, utility cupboard, drawer cabinet, corner cupboard). They were intended to be used by the home handyman. These sheets are of no particular historicalinterest but may be useful for display. They are a good example of the plans and information available to home handymen in the 1950s.These are six cream-coloured sheets of paper containing working drawings for making furniture and house additions. The drawings are printed in black and the headings and measurements are also in black print. The six sheets are enclosed in a brown paper folder which is somewhat creased and a little torn. the practical man’s book of things to make and do, home carpentry, warrnambool, history

North face of house viewed from the current (1990) pottery area (now pathed) The kitchen was separate from the house as a safety measure in the late 1800s. A detailed history of the site and early development of the Eltham Living and Learning Centre can be found in EDHS_04870 - Folder, Shire of Eltham Living and Learning Centre, 1996 The original property was part of Josiah Holloways subdivision of Little Eltham. It had a 70 foot frontage to Maria Street and stretched down to the Diamond Creek. John Perason, a Tanner, purchased the property in 1857 for £100 and he built a solid brick house which over the years was modified significantly by various owners and which is the basis of the present-day Living and Learning Centre. Claire Fitzpatrick and her husband Alfred, a retired chemical engineer, bought it in the early 1950's. Claire's interest in farming and animal husbandry and breeding saw her modify and establish buildings on the property to house goats and poultry with a horse stable and storage sheds for the animal food. She also built the coach house with its horse box and tack room and built an adjoining garage for their car. Structural alterations to the house were also carried out during the period of their ownership. Their house renovations removed the four fireplaces and chimneys and added a wider verandah, a fibro cement extension on the north wall requiring a doorway to be made in the brick wall for access. Part of a passage wall was removed to join the northwest room, now the "sitting room". A new jarrah floor was put in as the old one was rotten with borer. The verandahs, front and back, were re-organised in design and the front door had its leadlighting panels removed to allow more light into the house. During this period the water catchment well was filled in. This well had a concrete slab fitted onto a collar around its top. The well is 12 feet deep and 8 feet in diameter. Septic sewerage was installed and an internal toilet fitted in the house. The former northeast room was divided into bathroom/toilet and passageway with cupboards to access the extension. Kitchen stove and sink was removed (they fell apart) and a slow-combustion stove with hot water heater installed. Basins and hot water were connected to the new bathroom. In the early 1970s Eltham Shire Council, Councillors Frank Maas and Don Maling, were proposing an extended communities activities program be set up and the Commonwealth Grants Commission was approached for financial assistance to such a scheme. During 1974 a $50,000 Commonwealth Government grant was received by the Shire Council to acquire the Fitzpatrick property as part of the Shire's planning to establish an "extended community activities program". Council's Committee recommended an annual budget of $26,950 for the program and the project was named the Living and Learning Centre and in charge of the program was the first co-ordinator, Carina Hack. The activities were planned to cover "practical skills for living" and included cooking, preserving, gardening, animal husbandry, home economics, electronics, carpentry, hairdressing, making children's clothes and car maintenance. Hobbies and arts and crafts that would include amongst other future items, winemaking, music spinning and weaving and painting. 739 main road eltham, eltham living and learning centre, living and learning centre, living and learning nillumbik (eltham), main road eltham

This wood plane would have been used in the past both in industry and in the home. It is an early example of a plane and has antiquarian interest. This item has no known local provenance but is retained as a good example of a vintage tool used in the past by carpenters and handymen. This is a metal tool for planing wood. It has a rectangular wooden base and two side bars for adjusting the length and angle of the blade. The tool has several metal wing nuts and screws and a wooden handle. This exercise book contains details on the work carried out by A.Greed, a tradesman undertaking small carpentry and repair jobs in the Warrnambool region. The works completed date from 17 April 1945 to 11 October 1949. Mr Greed apparently worked mostly for the Public Works Department and had contracts for schools including Ecklin South, Panmure, Cudgee, Dennington, Mailors Flat, Grasmere, and Warrnambool Technical School and for other public buildings including the Warrnambool Court House, the Police Station and Housing Commission buildings. Other contracts included ones for the Framlingham Aboriginal Reserve, Callaghan’s Garage, the Caledonian Hotel, the Methodist Croquet Club and many private home owners. Details on the identity of ‘A. Greed’ are not known as there are several possibilities for the 1940s era. One clue is that an ‘E. Greed’ was also an employee. This exercise book is of some interest as an example of a tradesman’s handwritten details of his work as a carpenter and repair man in the 1940s in the Warrnambool area. There are many local names and businesses of interest mentioned in the exercise book. This is an exercise book with a grey cover with red binding. The dark blue printing on the front cover is enclosed in scroll patterns and the back cover has dark blue printing The cover is creased and has some ink splotches. The front cover has been stamped but the printing is now mostly illegible. The pages contain handwritten work and accounting information in black and blue ink. Some pages have been overwritten in red and black ink and pencil and there is one loose sheet. The Vana Exercise Booka.greed,, warrnambool tradesman, history of warrnambool

Horrie Breeden is identified as the young man, front RHS; back RHS is Albert Dean and his wife (nee Breeden). The Breeden family came to Surrey Hills in 1905, first to Guildford Road, then Middlesex Road where Horrie Breeden lived as a boy. He sometimes used to help with milking at the adjoining Kenneally's dairy in Highfield Road. Sometimes he and his brother drove the cows from there to Schneider's property near Florence Road on the way to Surrey Hills Primary School. The cows would graze here until the boys took them back after school. At other times he would deliver milk from the Croydon Road dairy (Isherwood's or Bovill's) to St Joseph's Boys Home before school. Horrie became an apprentice in woodwork / carpentry at Vine's timber yard before serving in World War 1. Horrie's father died in 1919 and in the same year he bought 3 cows and established his own dairy on his mother's property on the corner of Goodwood Street and Boisdale Road. In the 1920s Horrie built the first house in Goodwood Street. He went on to build others in the street including his own at No 7 Goodwood Street. He did all the joinery and internal fittings for this. [Oral testimony: Horrie Breeden to Jocelyn Hall in 1979.] The clothes are suggestive of the early 1900s, so the photo may have been taken at the Breeden home in Middlesex Road, rather than at Horrie Breeden's home in Goodwood Street, Surrey Hills, established after he returned from World War 1. C & G Harding Pty Ltd opened a $350,000 crumpet-making factory in Wigg Street, Wodonga on 18th March 1977. The company director and plant manager was John Harding. They initially employed 20 local employees. At its peak the business baked hundreds of thousands of crumpets every week, producing 7,200 crumpets per hour. As well as being exceptionally popular in Wodonga, they shipped their products as far away as Sydney, The business closed in the 1990s. The Sarah Harding Baking Company originated in Richmond, Victoria. William Harding was convicted of sheep stealing in 1846 and sentence to 10 years transportation. Harding was lucky he was not sentenced a decade earlier - he trained in carpentry and arrived a free man. In 1852, he was working on the foundations of a new home when his neighbour - the wealthy politician William Highett - gave him a loan to build the Kingston Hotel in Richmond where he was the licensee in 1854. It was successful, but Harding drank and gambled much of the profits and when he slighted Highett in a card game the loan was foreclosed. The Hardings were saved by wife Margaret and daughter Sarah, the eldest of their 17 children, who started a successful crumpet business - the Sarah Harding Baking Company. The company operated for over 100 years, carried on in several locations by descendants and relatives of the original William Harding who died in Hawthorn, Victoria in 1904 after a long and colourful life. The Wodonga business was the first C & G Harding bakery to be established outside of Melbourne. This item is significant because it represents a successful Wodonga business. An advertisement for a Wodonga business. [REF: Oral testimony: Horrie Breeden to Jocelyn Hall in 1979.] In the 1990s the owner of 7 Goodwood Street discovered a branding iron under the house; this is presumed to relate to Horrie Breeden's dairy. It was donated to SHNC's collection. Horrace Bruce Breeden (7 July 1898-24 January 1988) was son of Charles Henry Breeden and Lavinia Maria Darby, both born Warwickshire; buried in Box Hill Cemetery. He was one of a large family. He married Olive Mary Romey.Black and white photo taken from the east end of Goodwood Street, Surrey Hills in 1930, looking towards Elgar and Riversdale Roads. Ronald Horace Setford was born in April 1915 at 18 Church Street, Hawthorn, at his family’s home above their decorator shop. He was the second of three sons born to Horace Turner Setford (1880-1944) and Mabel Crofts (1887-1943). He attended Hawthorn West Primary School and then Swinburne before beginning work in his family’s business ‘Setford and Son’ in October 1930. This was formalised in April 1931 when he became a carpentry and joinery apprentice. In 1934 he graduated as a grade four carpenter. Ron worked in the family business until 1964 and then worked at J S Kidd and Co Pty Ltd as a storeman until his retirement in December 1973. Ron married Grace Muriel Agnes Perrey (1915-2001) in 1936 and they first lived in Kew around 1940, at 38 Marshall Avenue. Ron served in the Citizen Military Forces as a sapper with the 9 Australian Army Transport Company, Royal Australian Engineers, signing up a week after Darwin had been bombed. He spent time in Darwin, Wayville (South Australia), Herberton and Grovely (Queensland). Afterwards he refused to eat rice, never spoke of the war, nor took part in any ANZAC day proceedings. In 1941, Ron and Grace bought their block of land at 9 Tanner Avenue, East Kew, part of the Old Golf Links Estate, for £225. It was not until December 1945 that Ron started building their home and they moved in during May 1947. Ron and Grace remained there for thirty-seven years until the house was sold to their nephew in 1984. It has since been demolished. Ron’s great passion was photography and in the early 1960s he purchased his Minolta camera. Slide evenings at Tanner Avenue were a regular occurrence. Ron made his own title slides, interval slides and end slides. As well as many holiday photos (around Australia and their world trip in 1966), he enjoyed photographing local landmarks, flowers, insects and family. One of Ron’s photography projects was to record the progress of the building of the Eastern Freeway. This was near their home, and he’d walk down to the works on a regular basis, dressed smartly, with his camera in hand. The workers thought he was an official photographer, and he was allowed on site to take his photos. In 1984, Ron and Grace downsized and moved to Bayswater. Ron passed away on 31 October 1988 at the Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood East, at age 73. His ashes were spread on his beloved rose bushes at Tanner Avenue. This note to the local milkman was associated with the milk bottle from the Wattle Park Dairy, which was purchased by Robin Kelly from a home in Surrey Hills in the 1970's or 1980's. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This ruler belonged to Louis Haeusler (b.1878) and is one of the many objects in the Haeusler Collection that represent home and farm life in early twentieth century Wodonga. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history.Wooden fold out carpenter ruler with bendable brass hinges and imperial measurements engraved into the wood.
