A series of photographs taken from the top of the 17 storey ICI House on the edge of Melbourne's CBD. This was the first building allowed to exceed Melbourne’s height limits set in the early 1900s, which had been based on the maximum height of fire brigade ladders. ICI House opened in 1958. These photographs appear to be from c1971, based on two other tall buildings under construction. The Collingwood photograph shows the three 20 storey Housing Commission towers built between 1968 and 1971. The third tower is still under construction. Two CBD photographs appear to show the nearly completed BHP House (41 storeys) in the distance in Williams Street built between 1969 and 1972. The two storey The Hunt Club Hotel was built in 1886, replacing a much earlier single storey hotel from the 1850's, that burnt down the same year. In 1982, the City of Sunshine purchased the historic Hunt Club Hotel and surrounding land from ICI. This is an early photograph of the Black Powder Mill after the Explosive Factory was closed down, but before any restoration work took place and it was placed on the Voctorian Heritage List.Black Powder Mill (Building No. 745) - Built: 1942, to supplement output from the nearby ICIANZ plant (operating since 1935). - Function: Ground gunpowder for bombs and shells using an edge-runner mill—a technology dating back to the 16th century. - Design: - Two levels: milling equipment above, mechanical gear below. - Reinforced concrete walls and sacrificial wooden blast doors directed explosions safely toward Kororoit Creek. - Incident: In 1944, an explosion injured two workers; one later died from burns. After European settlement in the mid 1850s, the North Albion site was being used as grassland for farming and grazing. In the late 1930's, the threat of another world war in Europe was developing and the Australian Government decided it needed to increase and to be more independent in the manufacturing of munitions and explosives. The Albion site was chosen opposite the existing commercial ICI ANZ factory. ICI ANZ was chosen to design, construct and operate the new facilities. In 1940 the factory first began production of propellants for small arms and artillery that were required by the military forces during WW2. After the end of the WW2 the plant continued producing explosives and fertilizers for commercial use. The site was closed down in 1986, and the site went through an extensive decontamination and cleanup before being redeveloped into a housing estate with a shopping complex located in its center. The Black Powder Mill, built in 1942 is the only remaining building from the Albion explosives Factory. Noel Tozer is a former President of the Friends of the Black powder Mill. The Hunt Club is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Deer Park and a rare 19th‑century structure in Melbourne’s west. Its story weaves together hunting culture, early white settlement of the Deer park area, explosives manufacturing, and community arts. This video features the second celebration of the opening of The Hunt Club and Community Arts Centre on the 26th November 1988.A hotel was first located at this site in 1850's. Over the years the hotel has been called various names including the Kororoit Creek Hotel, the Barley Mow Hotel & Plough Hotel. This hotel was described as an old English style wooden building pub consisting of eleven rooms exclusive of a storeroom and kitchen. The current Hunt Club Hotel building was built in 1886 on the former site of the burnt down ruins of the original hotel. It is one of the few 19th Century buildings remaining in the district. The hotel was named by the members of the Melbourne Hunt Club who used the hotel as a base for their deer hunts after leasing land nearby of over 300 acres from Sir W. J. Clarke.​ The Hunt Club Hotel operated between 1886 and 1911.​ In 1911, the hotel became a private residence. In 1921, the Australian Explosives and Chemicals Co. Ltd (later ICI Australia) purchased the Hunt Club building. By the 1950s, the Hunt Club building was converted into a research and staff training centre. In 1982, the City of Sunshine purchased the Hunt Club building. In 1985, it officially opened as the Hunt Club Community and Arts Centre. Two-up is a traditional Australian gambling game played with two coins tossed in the air, and players bet on whether they will land two heads, two tails, or odds (one of each). It’s one of the most iconic pieces of Australian cultural history. Two-up became famous among Australian soldiers in World War I, especially at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. It was simple, portable, and boosted morale. After the war, it became a symbol of mateship and remembrance. Two-up isn’t just a game, it’s a ritual of Mateship, Luck and Chance, Remembering diggers and Community gatherings. Because of this, Two-up is legally allowed to be played in most Australian states on ANZAC Day, even where gambling laws would normally prohibit it.Two‑up has a surprisingly rich little history in Sunshine, Victoria, because of the suburb’s strong links to WWI and WWII service, the RSL, and the old industrial workforce culture where the game stayed alive long after it faded elsewhere. Two-up was played in lunchrooms at the large factories throughout the district, such as at H.V. McKay’s Sunshine Harvester Factory, ICI & Wunderlich. It was played at private gatherings in back sheds, houses, paddocks, behind buildings and hotels around Albion, Braybrook, Matthews Hill, Sunshine & Sunshine North, and informally at the early Sunshine RSL. As the game was illegal, there are many reports in the local papers of places being raided by the police and fines being imposed by the courts on players that were caught playing the game. The suburb Cairnlea was officially established in 1999. Cairnlea was built on the former Albion Explosive Factory site. The Hunt Club Hotel (Now The Hunt Club and Community Arts Centre) and the Deer Park Reserve (Now John McLeod Reserve) are two of Deer Park's iconic places, both having long history with the district. This picture shows when The Club Hotel was a standalone building with the former stables out back. The building to the right and the caretaker's house at the rear were built by ICI C1932. Deer Park State School began in 1874 as State School 1434 Braybrook but soon the school became known as the Derrimut on Kororoit Creek State School. This was soon shortened to Kororoit State School The Kororoit State School and was renamed to the Deer Park State School in 1890 when the local area's name was changed from Kororoit Creek to Deer Park. The school suffered several dramatic events due to its proximity to the ICI explosives factory. These events included the windows being blown out after lightning struck the ICI factory, the ceiling collapsed after an explosion at the ICI factory, and a fire destroyed the school in 1942. The 1940's rebuild of the school included a new red brick building with bluestone detailed used from the original building. The new building matched Percy Everett’s Education Department architectural style of the era. This school was relocated to Cairnlea in 2007 and became known as the Cairnlea Park Primary School.
