Gideon Nicol (1836-1908) was a seaman who came to Warrnambool in 1858. In 1865 he selected land at Mount Warrnambool . He was one of the founders of the Farnham Cheese and Butter Factory and the Garvoc Cheese and Butter Factory and was a Shire Councillor from 1879 to 1906. These items will be useful to include in the Gideon Nicol file.These are scans of two pages from a book and an illuminated manuscript. The Illuminated Address was presented to James Tonkin on March 4, 1895, honouring his extraordinary bravery in rescuing miner Owen R. Owen from suffocation in foul air at the Collmann and Tacchi Company’s No. 3 shaft in California Gully, Bendigo. Mayor John Green, J.P., of Eaglehawk presented the address and a Mining Department bravery certificate at the Mechanics' Institute in California Gully. The document was created by local resident Mr. RogersIlluminated Address presented to James Tonkin recognising bravery, when he descended into a mine three times to rescue Owen R Owen who had fallen down a mine shaft at the Collmann and Tacchi Mine in 1895. J. K. Hall was a prominent local mining figure, investor, and speaker, rather than managing daily underground shaft operations, Outside of Bendigo, J. K. Hall was heavily involved in interstate quartz-reef exploration. The Confidence Extended Gold Mine was a major historical deep-shaft gold operation located on the Garden Gully Line of Reef in Bendigo, Victoria. Operating predominantly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it played a vital role in confirming Bendigo’s global status as one of the world's richest quartz-reef gold mining fields. This petition was a formal request signed by 2,626 citizens of Bendigo urging George Lansell, a local mining entrepreneur known as the "Quartz King" to return from London to help revitalise the local gold mining industry. By 1887, Bendigo's economy had declined. Sir John McIntyre (1832-1904) was a key figure in the Bendigo goldfields, a pharmacy owner, a prominent mining investor, and a leader in local government. McIntyre served on the Sandhurst Municipal Council (starting in 1859) and held the position of Mayor of the Borough of Sandhurst for six consecutive years (1863–1868), a period coinciding with the city’s early development and significant gold production. This formal certificate was presented to Mr Peter Smalley on 29 August 1917, on behalf of the church trust as a token of esteem and recognition for his service to the church. At the time, Smalley held the significant lay position of Circuit Steward within the Methodist administration at the Eaglehawk West Methodist Church. Peter Smalley was a well-known local figure in the Eaglehawk area near Bendigo, Victoria. He worked as a jeweller and was the son of a prominent local resident. Certificate presented to N C Boucher after retiring as President of the Tramway Division of the Australian Railways Union in 1947. Signed by A J Cregan as State President and J J Brown as State Secretary. The Union seal has been applied to the item. The Union had several divisions such as guards, signalmen, shunters etc. The Tramway Division represented the tramway depots at Elwood and Sandringham. The certificate includes a photo of the Union building, a train hauled by A2 945 and an Electric Train. The Union did not represent locomotive or electric train crews, these were represented by the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Employees. James Curnow served as a key official for the Geelong Jubilee Juvenile and Industrial Exhibition in 1887. This exhibition was a major event held to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and to encourage young people in trades and the "fine arts and ornamental works". The illuminated address is authenticated by the signatures of the exhibition's committee members. The illuminated address given to Thomas Weekley on his retirement from the Great Extended Hustlers Gold Mine, was presented to the Bendigo Historical Society by a descendant of Thomas in 2014, during a commemoration of the Great Extended Hustlers mine accident of 1914, where seven men were killed. The mine disaster occurred on May 2, 1914, when a dynamite explosion killed seven miners waiting at a plat to ascend the mine. The exact cause of the explosion was unknown, and the subsequent inquiry found no one to blame. The accident is commemorated at the Hustlers Reef Gold Mining Reserve, Bendigo, on the former site of the mine. This lithographic illuminated address issued to E J Swift for his services to the lodge by the United Ancient Order of Druids (UAOD) Grand Lodge of Australia. E. J. Swift served as the Grand Secretary during a significant era when the UAOD (Melbourne) was one of Victoria's most influential friendly societies. Swift was a key figure in the development and opening of Druids House at 407–409 Swanston Street, Melbourne. He was present when the building was officially opened on 4 April 1927 by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne.The UAOD was founded in Melbourne in 1851 as an offshoot from it's English Order. The UAOD functioned as a friendly society, providing medical, funeral, and sickness benefits to its members. The illuminated address is produced by the prominent Melbourne firm Troedel & Co. Corporal Phillip Edward Cook, 4470, 46th Battalion AIF Over 300 men from the Shire of Whittlesea enlisted during WWI. One of these was Corporal Cook, son of the Rev. Richard and Elizabeth Cook, and husband of Jessie May Cook of Whittlesea. On 27 July 1915, at the age of 33, Phillip Cook enlisted in the AIF. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. Carl Roeder was a highly respected figure in the Bendigo mining community, serving 27 years as a manager in the region. Roeder was part of a wave of experienced German miners who migrated to the Bendigo goldfields, and settled in the Bendigo area (then Sandhurst) in 1862 .The Victoria Consols Mining Company was one of the major players on the famous Garden Gully line of reef, one of the richest gold-producing areas in the world. Beyond mine management, Roeder served as Chair of the Board of the VC mining company. The Artist is F. de Kock (Frederic de Kock) and was a known artist and lithographer in Sandhurst during the 1880s and was often commissioned for these high-end, bespoke illuminated addresses.Illuminated address presented to Carl Roeder. This illuminated address was given to H.H.Smith, the Warrnambool Mayor, for his work with soldiers returning to Warrnambool and district during and after World War One. On the same occasion Smith was also given an armchair by the mothers, sisters and wives of Warrnambool returning soldiers. Henry Huntingdon Smith (1857-1941) started his own bakery business in 1885, firstly near the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets and later building his own shop at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets (Monaghans Pharmacy today). Smith was one of the most admired men in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. He was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1918 to 1937 (Mayor for two terms) and served continuously on the Warrnambool Hospital Committee for 39 years. He visited patients at the Hospital twice a week. He took a particular interest in the welfare of returning soldiers and it was said that there was not a returned man or woman whom Smith did not greet on his return to the district. Smith also was a tireless worker for the Methodist Church as an office bearer and a Sunday School teacher. Smith was also Vice President in 1937 of the first Warrnambool & District Historical Society. This document is of particular interest as it is a good example of the type of illuminated address produced during the early years of the 20th century. It also shows clearly the respect and love that Warrnambool people had for Henry Smith, a great volunteer worker in the community. This is a piece of cream-coloured parchment paper with a margin ruled in black ink and handwriting in blue and black ink surrounded by red ornamental scrolls and flourishes. The paper has an address to H.H.Smith and is followed by 74 names and the date (1920). The paper is inserted into a piece of red leather cloth. This has folded edges and an ornamental gold pattern around the front edges and a gold border around the back edges. There are two holes at the top of the folder and these have metal surrounds. The backing folder is rounded at the top edges. ‘Warrnambool, 6th December 1919. To H.H. Abraham Harkness, Esq., J.P. was an influential Australian pioneer, industrialist, and civic leader who served as the Mayor of the City of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo, Victoria) for the 1882–1883 council term. He served as a local magistrate hence 'JP' (Justice of the Peace)Large wooden framed illuminated address presented to Mayor Abraham Harkness. The frame has a flowery motive on the edges, with Australian animals (possums, rosellas, duck, bilby? ) in small circles at each corner and half way vertically.
