Rare Kinnear Bulldog Saddle (also known as a Bulldog Poley) made by William "Billy" Kinnear of Bourke St. Melbourne. The saddle was used during the Boer War by Pte "John Peter 'Humbert' BECHAZ" No. 1437. He enlisted in the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles and was wounded at the Wilmansrust incident on 12 June 1901. He sailed home on 13 Oct 1901. According to family legend, he served in WW1 in the 29th Battalion. However if this is so, it was possibly under a different name. There is no record of a Bechaz in the 29th Battalion or indeed in any other unit with records held by the National Archives. Even though he is mentioned as serving in the 29th Battalion on the Virtual War Memorial website, this is only a cross reference to information that has been included by an outside party.Leather horse saddle with stirrups attached. Girth strap and surcingle attached. A pair of metal spurs with straps and butterflies attached to a metal loop on RH side of saddle near pommel. Until its closure Kinnear's Rope : - *was an important example of a rope making factory. *was the largest and longest continually operating producer of rope products in Victoria. * contributed to the industrial landscape of Melbourne, in particular the western suburb of Footscray as a major industrial centre. *played a role in the history of post war migration to Victoria. *had an mportant and successful role in rope and textile manufacturing in Victoria during the twentieth century. * site includes the remnant rope walk which is demonstrative of a traditional rope laying process no longer practiced and one of only two surviving such structures in Victoria. *remnant rope-making machinery is of technological significance as rare surviving examples of such equipment dating from the early twentieth century. Kinnear Ropes (Kinnears Ropeworks) was one of Victoria’s most important industrial manufacturers, a major rope, twine, fibre and synthetic‑yarn producer whose Footscray factory located in Ballarat Road opposite Droop Street operated for a full century (1902–2002). From the earliest days of Baden‑Powell, rope was one of the Scout’s essential tools. The use of rope was a foundational skill in Scouting because it taught self‑reliance, teamwork, safety, and outdoor competence. This sample Board was donated to the 3rd Sunshine Scout Group by Bill Miller who worked at Geo. Painting by Howard Arklery titled "House and Garden, Western Suburbs, Melbourne 1988".Howard Arkley (1951–1999) was one of Australia’s most distinctive and influential contemporary artists, best known for his airbrushed, hyper‑colour images of suburban houses and interiors. His work turned the everyday architecture of Melbourne’s suburbs, brick veneers, triple‑fronted homes, patterned interiors, into bold, iconic art.6987.01 - Melbourne's Western Suburbs Greeting Cards Cveta Krstevska Kinnears Ropes.jpg Cveta Krstevska working on a twisting machibe at Kinnears Ropes, Footscray 6987.02 - Melbourne's Western Suburbs Greeting Cards - Men Fishing Maribyrnong River.jpg Two Men fishing in erlier days on the Maribyrnong River 6987.03 - Melbourne's Western Suburbs Greeting Cards - Newmarket Cattle Saleyards.jpg Cattle at the Newmarket Saleyardshoward arkley

This cookery book was printed in the early 1960s for the purpose of obtaining the necessary funds for the construction of the Mount Beauty swimming pool. The advertisements within this book covers local traders of this time frame, for example, the Bogong Hotel which is no longer operational. the culinary measurements are in Imperial measures(pounds and ounces). The book has sections for continental dishes and sweets (Australian flavour), special dishes for Lent, cakes (farmhouse fruit cake), jams, marmalades (home made), marrow and apple chutney. Some of these recipes are early 20th Century related and in the 2000s are not sought after. The food "take away" lifestyle has been responsible for the demise of a lot of the recipes in this book. The swing away from home grown produce has been not only a lifestyle change but also the faster pace of living in rural areas. The specialisation and redefined development of the local produce store (previously provided everything the rural shopper needed) was a forced move due to larger and cheaper city born fresh food supermarkets. Although there are still some local produce store within the region these will in time vanish. This cookery book was produced just after Mount Beauty was released from an SEC "closed" community in 1961(see KVHS 0134) and the town then had to fend for itself. This book was compiled and produced because the town needed a swimming pool (which possible would have been provided had the SEC still been responsible). The book demonstrates the strong rural psyche of rallying together for the good of all and united for something which would be of benefit to all. The period 1961 to the 1970s was one of great change for Mount Beauty. The SEC protective cage was a blessing for some but a goal for others. The independence that was gained after the SEC left provided for a drastic "make over" in regards to the facilities provided for the "locals" and that for the tourists. An increase in tourist related industries such as snow skiing in winter, hang gliding and gliding, mountain bike rallies, bush walking and horse riding, all of which have supply outlets in the town, has provided a more cosmopolitan atmosphere. These activities and the greater interaction with populations outside of the region has reduced the "hermit" type feel of the town psyche. This recipe book consists of eighty nine pages in black and white print. It contains black and white sketches, recipes of local domestic cooks and advertisements covering local traders. The cover is approximately 280 g/m2 in weight and the pages are at 90 g/m2 in weight. The cover has a design in the style of Abstract Expressionism (period 1950-1960s) of identifiable (clock, jug, fruit, window) and abstract objects in tints of blue and shades of black. This was designed by Cheryl Ryder of the Mount Beauty High School, under supervision of Mr I Baker (Art Teacher)On the foreword(page two and page three) "Mt. This is an original letter written by Peter Adam to Edward Vidler in 1907. Peter Adam was a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool district and the letter records his life beginning with his arrival in 1854 and concluding with his connection with the Kinnear family who acquired the historic property of Allandale in 1906. The letter also refers to the sending of a photograph and a sum of money for the right to have the photograph included on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honor Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, was Secretary of the Warrnambool and District Progress league and Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures in 1907 and he proposed producing a Pioneer Honour Board as part of Warrnambool’s 60th anniversary celebrations. He contacted many of the pioneers or their families and asked for a photograph, a fee and a biography and had the Boadrd made. For many reasons, including financial ones, the Pioneer Honour Board was not seen by the Warrnambool public until the 1920s but today it is one of Warrnambool’s great treasures. This letter is original and is of the utmost importance as it gives personal information about the life of Peter Adam, a person on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honour Board and it refers to the submission of a photograph for placement on the board. This is one of only two letters that we know of that refers to the sending of a photograph and the fee charged for its inclusion on the Pioneer Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, is important in Warrnambool’s history as the person most responsible for producing the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board, one of Warrnambool’s historical treasures. This is a letter on a piece of paper folded to make four pages with three of these pages containing handwriting in black ink. The paper has been torn and mended with adhesive tape.peter adam, allansford, edward vidler, warrnambool, warrnambool’s pioneer honour board, history of warrnambool
