They were taken around the time of the Beauville Estate’s 65th Heritage Celebration held on 10/03/2001 and donated to the Caulfield Historical Society shortly afterwards. Photographer Bev Baxter. City of Glen Eira’s Heritage Management Plan Vol 2 p79 (this is p84 of the pdf version) – HO12 Beauville Estate and environs, Murrumbeena: The Beauville Historic Area is important at the State level as the first large housing estate undertaken by the AV Jennings Construction Co, later Jennings Group Limited, Victoria’s largest home builder. It is important also as a very early estate development incorporating a range of features other than houses and including made roads, shops and recreation facilities. In this respect it was the forerunner of the comprehensively planned housing estate of the post war era. The estate is distinguished by its aesthetic values, as is the earlier and comparable Hillcrest Estate, which are formed by a combination of restrained diversity in house styles, with the exception of no. 30 in the emerging International style, and by a landscaped garden environment. Many of her photos are held in the Society Collection. The Wodonga Post Office was constructed on the corner of Sydney Road (High Street) and South Street in 1874. It was Wodonga’s second Post Office. The original post office opened on June 1, 1856 near Wodonga Creek. This building was originally built of red brick, although it was later painted over in white. It had an attached residence in South Street and was connected to it by a door. The residence was later demolished to move the mail boxes which had faced High Street, to South Street. The brick Telephone Exchange was constructed in 1946 behind the Post Office but separated from it. It operated as a manual exchange until the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. In 1985 a new post office was opened further south in High Street. This building, greatly renovated, is now part of the Wodonga Community College. This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century. A black and white image of the 2nd Wodonga Post Office. There are 6 windows across the front of the building and the name Wodonga Post Office below a round clock. Kiewa Valley Historical SocietyPin Drawing, Brass tacks, mid to late 1900's
... Differences are still noticeable, such as the requirement of drawing pins for temporary signs and mail box commercially important "sales" notifications. ...This particular box of brass drawing pins would have been used before the introduction of cheaper polished chrome drawing pins manufactured in Asia. The box construction and label would suggest that supply of this boxes contents could have been in the early 1950's. Drawing pins or push pins were first invented in 1900 by Mr Edwin Moore. The need for a secure fastener to accommodate temporary signs and notes for domestic and commercial environments sprang up from the need to cope with an increasing faster method of presenting information on removable surfaces such as temporary notice boards. In the 1950's and later the increase in the pace of "living" brought about many time saving written communication notices. This temporary method of providing fast temporary notices is being surpassed by the computer age and mobile telephone "applications". The information spectrum of the computer age has made many "hands on" (drawing pin) applications go to the "dodo" level. This box of drawing pins is very significant to the Kiewa Valley and its region because it demonstrates that the pace in rural regions especially those that were once semi remote regions has moved at the same pace as the bigger towns and cities. Differences are still noticeable, such as the requirement of drawing pins for temporary signs and mail box commercially important "sales" notifications. The pressures that produce the "rat" syndrome, that is pressure by increased population levels infringing upon the individual's day-to-day existence is still not present in rural areas such as the Kiewa Valley. Drawing pins are still a requirement for leased accommodation (which are usually short term accommodation) for the personalisation of "home" wall decorations and shopper's "notice and information boards"This small box, similar to a "match box" (thumb activated slide, top open, cardboard container), holds brass drawing pins. These brass pins are also known as brass tacks, thumbtacks or push pins. The top of the brass tack has a "domed head" with the manufacturer's logo stamped on it. The number "2" on the bottom right of the label is the "weight" of the drawing pin. On the front and within a red border and red letters "BRASS" and below this in script form "Drawing Pins" and below this in smaller letters "Made In Germany" Below this and on the bottom left side "100" and also on the bottom but to the right "No. 2"notice and information boards, quick temporary fasteners., pins, tacts, brass tacts, domestic, decorations -
Kiewa Valley Historical SocietyBox Linen Thread, early to mid 1900's
... This box which contained linen thread, "British" made, is very significant to the Kiewa Valley because it demonstrates the conditions under which households in the late 1800's and early 1900's evolved from a "domestic repair /replacement" of damaged clothing to a consumer of recycled and shop bought clothing and linen. The ability of semi isolated rural based families to purchase "off the rack" clothing was severely affected by weather, long distance over dirt roads(poorly serviced) to large towns(shops), horse/cart or slower driven cars. The purchasing of clothing was, on the whole, from trading house "mail ...This box which once contained linen thread manufactured in Scotland and labelled "British" manufacture" was used for the repair/manufacture of clothing by professional seamstresses and those wives required to "do" repair stitching of family clothes. This box was manufactured in a period when the title "United Kingdom" was used (late 1700's early 1900's) to describe the union of Britain and Scotland. The label however can be misleading as the"British Manufacture" thread was manufactured in Scotland. The broad term "British Manufacture" was used for the benefit of those in the "colonies" of Australia and New Zealand, during a period when the "coined" phrase "best of British, or British best" was synonymous to "top quality". After World War II the need for "cheaper products" was more persuasive than the quality of the product. In rural areas this shift to cheaper "non British" goods was at a slower rate than in the cities. Goods such as clothing manufactured or altered by seamstresses were regarded as of a higher standard and therefor the use of linen thread from "Britain" was a sign of quality and reliability. The purchasing of clothing was, on the whole, from trading house "mail order" consignment orders. This red paper covered box has a white covered lid (top) with black print detailing the manufacturer and contents. This box contained 150 yds of linen thread 2 cord. A small added note pasted on one side "USUAL TWIST (s)" describing the thread's appearance. Two semicircular "finger" holes on two sides of the lid permit easier removal of the lid from the base.On the top lid: "W.&J.
