This Shirley College school badge belonged to Gladys Elvira Linton, nee Richardson (b. 1891). Shirley College was a private girls' school situated in a large single-storey house in Seymour Grove, Brighton from around 1898 until 1912. The school was first run by the Misses Bird and later by Miss Elizabeth Stewart. Gladys married First World War veteran and Brighton local Richard Vivers Linton in 1919. Jessie Irene ROWE, daughter of John ROWE and Annie (nee PATERSON), married Joseph McKay ABERDEEN (a Technical School teacher) at Orbost in 1918. Her father was one of the first vestrymen of St James Church of England and her mother was a prominent church worker. It would seem an appropriate time of her marriage for Jessie to receive such a badge at the time of her marriage. John Rowe died 28-9-1920 and it is noted that Annie left Orbost in 1922. (ref. John Phillips) This badge was presented to Miss Rowe by pupils and staff of St Andrew's Church Kindergarten on April 9 1918. These three badges were issued as fund raisers on Children's Day in 1918,1919 and 1941. The Children's Flower day arose out of the League of Young Gardeners established in 1916 to assist the war effort by encouraging children to cultivate garden plots at home and at school. The Children's Flower Day included lectures and lessons at school related to garden cultivation. These are badges or pieces of insignia that would have been worn on the collar or cap of members of the Victorian Volunteer Corps. This organization was formed in Victoria in 1867 with the object of fostering in young men leadership, discipline, loyalty and initiative through training programs and community service. The Victorian Volunteer Corps was established in Warrnambool in 1868 and units were initially based at the Warrnambool State School and the Warrnambool Grammar School. Later groups were formed in other schools and competed against each other in rifle shooting competitions, marching and parade skills etc. The Warrnambool groups were trained and assisted by members of the local adult Volunteer Corps. Today cadet groups are sponsored by the Australian Army and there is revived interest in Warrnambool in school cadet groups. These insignia items have no known local provenance but are of historical interest as mementoes of the Volunteer Cadet Corps that operated in Warrnambool from the late 1860s through to the early 20th century. .1 This is a bronze-coloured metal badge with gold lettering, a crown on top, a cross with stars in the middle section and laurel leaves around the outer edges. This is a badge of the Gould League of Bird Lovers. This organization was formed in 1909 in Victoria and was initially sponsored by the Education Department of Victoria. It was named after the English ornithologist, John Gould and his wife Elizabeth. The initial aim was to encourage school children to protect native birds and their eggs. Today the aim of the group has been widened to include education for environmental sustainability. In 1967 the name was changed to Gould League and in 2006 it became Gould Group Ltd. This badge has no known local provenance but many school children in Warrnambool in the 20th century and even today have belonged to the Gould League of Bird Lovers and the badge is retained as a memento of what was once an important organization for school children in Victoria. This school had its origins in the establishment in 1913 in Timor Street, Warrnambool of the Warrnambool Technical School which later incorporated the Warrnambool Technical College. In the 1970s the Technical School section was relocated to Caramut Street, Warrnambool and in 1990 was re-named Brauer College (after a local doctor of note, Doctor Alfred Brauer, a prominent supporter of technical education in Warrnambool. The Timor Street location is now the site of South West T.A.F.E. According to the school history 'The lamp burns brightly' a special committee of the school ouncil were appointed to organise a great fete in August 1922 to raise money towards the purchase of new property in Webster/Mair Streets. "The Oriental Fair transformed the Ballarat City Hall for three consecutive days. Stalls of many types were heavily laded, and, as one reveller commented, 'The perpetual motion of the fairty floss machine, producing its quaint confection, was an object of interest and wonderment to many, and the crack of the pea rifle in the adjoining shooting gallery almost dispersed the feathery flakes of fairy floss as they issued from the magic machine'. An arochestra provided continuous music, varied at times by vocal solos, eurythmic displays and other enterainments. the fair raised the remarkable sum of 1,576 pounds."
