A committee set out certain specifications (including the crown tower), and a competition for the best design was won by architect RA Lawson. The building, constructed by Lang Brothers of Parkville at a cost of 2,170 pounds, was opened in 1898. College Church remained the only parish church in Parkville until 1934. The outstanding element is the crown tower, a choice of the first minister, the Reverend Alexander Yule. It is a copy, albeit on a reduced scale, of King's College Chapel, Aberdeen University, of which Reverend Yule was a former student. This crown tower is the only example in Victoria and is possibly unique in Australia. The church is constructed of red brick and Oamaru sandstone with a steeply pitched slate roof and parapeted gables. Windows are in the Gothic pointed arch style. The interior of the Church has a fine timber ceiling with arch braces. Two Photocopies of a pamphlet from May 1924 signed A. L Kenny about the newly built St Aloysius Catholic Church on Balaclava Road, Caulfield. The pamphlet features a detailed description of the architectural features of the interior and exterior, including Gothic spire and nuns tubrine. The pamphlet is across 6 A4 pages for both copies. Included within are several photographs, of varying sizes, of the interior and exterior of the church, a photograph of the architect Bart Moriarty and an illustration of the proposed Presbytery. A picnic organised on the first of January 1928 on the grounds of the Duckett family home, Riversdale in Hawthorn. (See Jottings 90, January 1928) Mr Duckett , an ironmaster and manufacturer. In 2017 a link with a Mrs Marjorie Duckett (nee Mclennan) in the late 20th C confirmed her role as secretary of the Altona Op Shop which provided funds to the Mission in the late 20th C. An image was also found in Ship to Shore newsletter of the MTSV.The Ducketts had links to the McLennan family also supporters of the Mission. Connections and memberships with both families identified in the records and Archive.
