The Victorian Returned Services League(RSL) presented a Festival of Empire and Remembrance. The RSL Memoriall Band played martial airs as all branches of the services and representatives from all parts if the Empire marched down the centre aisle to take their seats on the stage. The photograph depicts Mrs Elizabeth Holland, nee Brewer, who was born in Durham, England, in 1846, and died in Australia in 1923. Elizabeth had married Thomas Holland in Australia in 1864; his first wife died at sea, along with his eldest son, on their way to Australia. At the time, he had two other living children. Thomas and Elizabeth had thirteen children, all born in the Warrnambool district. Their seventh child, Mary Ann, married Frank Wicking; one of their children was Tom Wicking, who donated this photograph. Tom Wicking (1907-1995): Tom was the son of Frank Wicking and the grandson of Elizabeth Holland. He was one of the founders of Flagstaff Hill and became a life member in 1987. He donated many items of memorabilia and all of his historical papers to Flagstaff Hill after his death. A local historian, he published four books on Warrnambool History. He was given a Citizenship Award in 1981 and had a Street named “Wicking Place” in his honour in 1992 by the Warrnambool City Council. Tom was a Tour Guide for Flagstaff Hill for many years.The photograph is a record of Elizabeth Hiolland and connects her with Warrnambool's Wicking family. One of her grandsons, Tom Wicking, was a well-known local historian. He was also instrumental in the formation of Warrnambool's Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village, where his historical research records are held.Photograph of a female adult wearing a decorative hat and shawl. She had a profound influence on nursing, serving overseas throughout WWI and then later becoming "one of the first senior nurses to recognise the impact of war on minds, she set up separate units for men who had self-harmed and she pioneered nurse anaesthetists in the British Armed Forces" (from abstract). Rexona was developed in 1908 by an Australian pharmacist and his wife - Mrs Alice Sheffer, the wife of SF Sheffer, the founder of the Sheldon Drug Company. A talented physician, she wanted to give people new kinds of personal care products, with effective ingredients that also smelled good. Rexona’s first advertising campaign launched in the 1920s. Personal hygiene billboards began to spring up all over Australia touting the company name, with contests held for each town’s Rexona Baby and Miss Rexona. Some would proudly state: ‘Welcome to our town, a good Rexona Town.’ 1930s Rexona was bought by British soap maker Lever Bros, who would soon join Dutch Margarine Unie to form Unilever.In the 1960s the world met Rexona antiperspirant, later to become Sure in the UK. It was then introduced in Finland and quickly rolled out to the rest of the world. 1980s Rexona continued to expand, bringing superior sweat protection to people all over the globe. Since the 1990s Rexona products are available in varying forms including as aerosols, pumps, roll-ons, sticks and creams. This quilt was made to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the founding of Donvale Christian College. Mrs Anne Suk was one of the few women who held a place on the Board of the School in its early years. She was a member of one of the founding families. This is one of very few items to survive from the early years of the school. It was specifically created to celebrate the 25th anniversary.Machine pieced pale blue Quilt with navy and olive green borders and navy binding. School logo and swag of flowers have been machine pieced and appliqued on the quilt. The quilt has then been hand quilted with navy thread.On the back there is a label with "J.H.E. Suk" machine stitched on it. Mabel Beatrice Josephine Tully was born to John Patrick Tully and Mary Elizabeth Dole at White Hills on 16.07.1896.. Mabel lived in the family home at 61 Charleston Rd. Bendigo and was employed as a saleswoman until she married John (Jack) Killeen in 1925. Jack was a junior postal worker. Mabel's father John Tully died on 11.08.1926. In 1927 Mabel and Jack were living at 70 Abbott Street Bendigo. Mabel did home duties and Jack was employed as a postal linesman. In 1931 Mabel and Jack were living back at 61 Charleston Rd Sandhursr East. In 1937 Jack was working as a barman, and as a fruiterer in 1943. Mabel's mother died 11.01.1941. Mabel's husband Jack Killeen died on 22.06.1975 aged 79 years. Mabel died on 7.01.1987 aged 90 years.
