A man and two women surround the case of the extinct Tasmanian Thylacine at the Burke Museum. They have been identified as Tim Flannery, Linda Peacock and Pam Magennis. Tim Flannery was an orator at the Kerferd Oration and spoke on "The Climate Change Challenge".This photograph is significant both socially and historically. The Kerferd Oration is held every year and speaks on topics that both challenges and encourages members of the community. In 2008 the speaker was Tim Flannery pictured in this photograph. Flannery spoke on the issue of climate change, and how we can better manage the earth and her resources. This makes this photograph particularly interesting as the Tasmanian Thylacine is extinct because of the acts of man (hunting and introduction of foreign species), this photograph therefore sends a message about climate change and subsequent extinction, which makes it a significant item to the community of Beechworth and to the Burke Museum.Coloured rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper.Reverse: 6854burke museum, beechworth, 2008, event, thylacine, taxidermy, late 2000s fashion, museum display, recreation, arts, community, 2008 kerferd oration, the climate change challenge, extinction

This photograph was taken in the Burke Museum c1970 and depicts an exhibition about the Kelly Gang. This photograph is of social significance due to its connection with the Burke Museum as well as the Kelly Gang. The Kelly Gang story is integral to the formation of an Australian identity and highlights the Irish oppression during the 1800s. Ned Kelly is an Australian icon, mythologised in Australian literature, art, folklore and history, and the Kelly Gang story permeates Australia's national consciousness. The Burke Museum is significant here also, as the image shows the importance of the Kelly Story to the Beechworth area and local identity. This photograph is also of research potential due to the great interest in the Kelly Gang history in Australia, and also for its presentation of a historical museum exhibition in Beechworth.Black and white, rectangular photograph, printed on photographic paperObverse: Beechworth/a pictorial record of the early days/and associations with the Kelly Gang Reverse: BMA03314 1997.3125/Agfaned kelly, kelly gang, burke museum, australia, museum, display, photograph, pictorial record, beechworth municipality, beechworth, exhibit, bust, clock, urn, vase, painting

This exhibit displays a collection of over 30,000 items, many dating back over 150 years. The ‘street of shops’ tell the story of the changing town and its community. This photograph is of social significance to the Beechworth area and the Burke Museum as it depicts a still-exhibiting museum display that is of value to the community. The artefacts exhibited in the photograph all have a strong connection to the Beechworth area, having been donated by members of the local community, and are of special value to that community. It is also a record of the curating work of Roy Harvey, a local historian, author and museum curator, as well as a depiction of the curating and exhibition practices of the 1990s, when the photo was taken. This is a colour rectangular photograph printed on paper.Obverse: Est London House 1856 / mantles, manchester, robes, gowns, bonnets / rundle and roberts.
