The photograph shows the coach owned by Mr Tom Malinn of Sardine Creek. It is in front of the Orbost Club Hotel in Nicholson Street, Orbost. On lst Juy 1926, Tom Malin took over the horse drawn coach run from Orbost to Delegate. After a few years he obtained an International 2-3 ton truck. On his first trip to Bendoc he did not carry mail, but brought Miss Cunning, the first lady head teacher and collected ballot boxes. On his next trip (March 1930) he made history as the first mailman on this route to deliver mail in a motor vehicle. (info. Bendoc History) Tom and Sophie Malinn farmed at Martin’s Creek. Sophie (nee Jensen) married Tom Malinn in 1926. Sophie’s family had run the historic “Danebo Hotel” at Martin’s Creek for many years, and in 1931, Tom and Sophie began farming at Martin’s Creek, initially cropping maize and beans. The first hotel built in Orbost was the Club in 1885, an old wooden place on the corner built for J. A. Petersen of the Mitchell Hotel Bairnsdale, now known as the Victoria Hotel. Tom Maguire, a step­son of the late Mr. Petersen, carried on the club Hotel Orbost for 5 or 6 years. The photograph shows the Royal Mail wagon outside Herbert's General Store in the main street of Orbost. This store was one of the first in Orbost, located in the lower (southern) section of Nicholson Streety. Lancelot Herbert had come to Orbost in c.1886 to become a partner in the store with Massey Coote. After Mr Coote's death in 1891, Herbert bought out the partnership. Progressively, the Herbert family went on to own many businesses in Orbost, Cann River and Noorinbee. This is a pictorial record of transport in 19th century Orbost. Mr Wehner's family was a prominent family in Orbost from the late 19th C. Hermann Wehner founded Wehner's blacksmiths at Orbost in 1889. Oswald began working with his father in 1910. In 1947, Ossie's son Tom started blacksmithing, retiring in 1991 and closing the business. The building remains in Nicholson Street, Orbost. A photograph is significant because it is of one of Orbost's blacksmiths. The Wehner family of blacksmiths (1889-1991) worked in Orbost and were the last blacksmiths operating until 1991. This book was found with other books from Orbost House. Orbost House, believed to have been established by the Macalister family around the turn of the 20th century was a boarding house in Lochiel Street, Orbost. Nowlan's Library was in the billiards saloon in Nicholson street Orbost and was owned by Lionel H. Nowlan. The joining fee was 1/- and the cost of borrowing was 3d per book. A hard back book with an illustration of a man's face and two large birds hovering above. The book has black binding. It was written by H.J. These four stamps are from George Temple's Store which was established in Orbost in 1887. This store was later purchased by the Herbert family following Mr Temple's death in May 1918.George Temple, born in Yorkshire on 26/2/1832 was of the earliest Orbost storekeepers. Temple's Store was on the corner of Ruskin and Nicholson Streets opposite the Post Office. He packed stores to the Bendoc area goldfields. The store building eventually became part of Herbert's store following Mr Temple's death in May 1918.Four rubber stamps. All have wooden handles. Two have metal seals and two have rubber seals. This item was used in Dicken's Store. Originally the Pardew Brothers store in Nicholson Street, Orbost, Frank Dicken purchased the shop business. It was a bakery and general store and was known as F.B. Dicken and Son. In 1948 they bought the shop freehold . The store remains today converted into two separate shops. The meat slicer was purchased from Henry Berry and Company a large wholesale grocers and general merchant company, first established in Melbourne in 1859.The Dicken store is a prominent Orbost building. Frank and May Dicken moved to Orbost in 1936 where Frank became manager of Pardew Brothers store in Nicholson Street. In 1945, Frank purchased the business and in 1947, formed a partnership with his son, Selwyn. The store was then called F.B. Dicken and Son. The premises are still retained by the Dicken family although the shop business was sold in 1981. (ref. In Times Gone By - Deborah Hall)A heavy commercial meat slicer which sits on bench. Frame is painted red. The tray moves as the handle turns. The main structure is cast iron. It has a circular steel blade. The chrome output tray is detachable.
