The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 22 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. This letter was sent to Mr. Frank Tickle Esquire in Warracknabeal, in Victoria, to inform him that his son Lieutenant Frank William Tickle,M.C. 8th Battaslion, had been awarded the Military Cross. With reference to the award conferred as announced in the London Gazette dated 26th November, 1917. "For conpicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He led his company throughout with such fearless disregard of danger as to inspire his men to great effort. When they came under heavy shell fire he halted his men in shell holes, and went out to a flank and engaged the enemy with a machine gun. During the fight for the final objective he was again heavily opposed by a machine gun. He led his men forward with great gallantry and personally killed the entire gun crew and successfully captured the position. He set a splendid example of courage and determination."Letter in brown wooden frame with the Battalion colour patch attached to wooden surround under the glass.The letter has the Commonwealth of Australia emblem on the top of the page and was issued by the Department of Defence on the 17th September 1918, to notify Lieutenant F.W. Tickle's father the he had been awarded the Military Cross. It also has the citation for which the Military Cross was awarded. Temporary chapel at the Central Institute, Siddeley Street. The Institute designed by Walter Butler was inaugurated in November 1907 by Governor Northcote. Amongst the furniture are the lectern donated by Lady Northcote, the altar donated by Mrs Charles Shuter in December 1907. Both are still in use in the St Peter chapel. J D Kestner manufactured the Hilda doll from 1914. They ceased business in 1938.J D Krestner 'Hilda' baby doll with hard composite body, jointed arms and legs and porcelain head. She dates from post 1914. Her hair is short, blonde and 'frizzy'. She is wearing a cream pintucked linen dress trimmed with cream lace at the hem, sleeves and yoke. Underneath the dress is a cream cotton pintucked petticoat with a lace insert and lace trim at the hem. She has a yellow knitted singlet and knickers.
