Mr Alfred Morton with his sisters, brothers and friends camping at Carrum in the 1890's. This area was later called Chelsea. Alfred Louis Morton (known as Louis) was born in Geelong in 1866, the fifth of eleven children of Mark Morton and Eliza nee Heard (married 1898). Alfred began work for the Post Office at South Yarra in the 1890s. In the late 1800s it was common for people from Melbourne and north of the city to travel to Chelsea area beaches for their holidays and many liked the area so much that, like the Mortons, they moved here permanently. In the 1890s Alfred’s sister, Mrs William Ashmore, built a weekend house at the foot of what is now Foy Avenue in Chelsea. The Morton family, including Alfred, visited the area often, camping on the foreshore during the 1890s. In 1911 Alfred moved his family permanently to a house on the corner of Morton Grove and Main Road Chelsea (now known as the Nepean Highway) on property that extended from the main road to the beach. This house was destroyed in the fire of 22 December 1913 which raged amongst the ti-tree on the foreshore between Aspendale and Chelsea. Many buildings were destroyed in this fire. The Argus newspaper reported on Wednesday 24 December that 94 houses were burnt with glowing embers blown a mile and half inland. According to the Argus but for the wide break provided by the Point Nepean Road (now the Nepean Highway) and the railway line, the scrub on the other side might have caught. The Morton children, Elsa and Ivan, attended Chelsea State School (now Chelsea Primary School) and Mrs Morton was active in the establishment of St Chad’s Church of England in Chelsea. At the age of 80 in 1945 Mr Morton was concerned about reports that English children had lost their toys due to the war and so he made (as part of a wider effort in Australia) 100 toy engines that were sent to England. This file contains two items: 1/A group of eight letters, predominantly between Hon. Secretary of Caulfield Historical Society R. Ballantyne and members of the Caulfield City Council written between 1981 and 1983, regarding the installation of a plaque in commemoration of the centenary of the Rosstown Railway. The first two letters are handwritten from R. Ballantyne to G. Calder and Carol Camy, dated 01/06/1981 and 22/02/1982. The letter to G. Calder supports a suggestion in the May edition of the CAULFIELD CONTACT for the installation of a plaque in celebration of the centenary of the Rosstown Railway, suggesting a potential site for another plaque on Curraweena Road. The letter to Carol Harry discusses the costing of the plague and a possible contribution towards this cost from the Caulfield Historical Society. The letter appears to be incomplete, having no sign off from the author. Attached to the letter is what appears to be a suggestion for the inscription of the plaque. The letters addressed to R. Ballantyne are typed and dated 12/06/1981, 24/06/1981, 14/07/19891, 17/12/1981 and 08/09/1983, from A. Craig and D.B. Hogan on behalf of City Manager G.K. Calder and City Liason Officer Carol Harry. All letters concern the commemorative plaque, with these from Carol Harry including handwritten notes which appear to be in R. Ballantyne’s handwriting. The final letter is from Mayoral Secretary Norma Polglase to Miss B. Snowball, dated 23/08/1983, inviting her to attend the unveiling of the plaque. Also included in the item are Council Committee Meeting minutes, dated 16/05/1981, broaching the subject of installing the plaque in Koornang Road. 2/Four colour photographs and two black and white copies of one of the photographs, all dated 18/09/1983 and showing the opening of the commemorative plaque in Marrara Gardens. Typewriters pre date computers and were used by office workers eg. Secretaries for documents and letter writing. An inked tape was hit by the keys as it moved along which resulted in their imprint being copied onto paper. Multiple copies were made by inserting carbon paper between sheets of paper. The original was easily identified.Used in the Kiewa Valley.Large, heavy, hard plastic two toned grey typewriter. The keys board includes symbols for inches, pounds, dollars, cents and fractions. The margins and size of paper measurements are in inches.The keyboard slopes up to a vertical plane. On top the area is flat where there is a small gap which exposes the metal keys. The cylinder that holds and enables the paper to be moved is long with controls at each end and a large lever that returns the cylinder to the left. Behind the cylinder there is a compartment. The keys hit an inked tape (black or red and black) which forms an impression onto the paper. Mechanisms, using the correct buttons, enable margins etc. to be pre set. This typewriter sits 3 cm high from a base. Vinyl deep red/black cover sits on top covering top and sides to protect the typewriter from dust. Over 1962-63, plans were drawn up for the conversion of the main building into administrative offices and a rehabilitation centre. As the children were now located at the school in Burwood, and with funds achieved from the sale of the old factory buildings to the Alfred Hospital, the St Kilda Road building could expand room for its office workers and provide greater floor space to rehabilitation staff. The State Revenue Office (SRO) is a $5 million world-class purpose built revenue collection facility employing over 200 people. SRO relocated 40% of its operations from Melbourne to the Ballarat Technology Park, creating more than 180 employment opportunities for skilled people from the region. The Ballarat facility houses the majority of the SRO's operations capability and utilises state-of-the-art technology. The BTP was selected to host the SRO after a feasibility study revealed that Ballarat was an ideal regional centre to support this important government function. The BTP enables the SRO to be in close proximity to an existing cluster of technology based enterprises and organisations, as well as education, training and research opportunities presented to SRO staff at the nearby Federation University. This ledger was started in 1901 when ledgers and other bookkeeping methods were hand written and with nib or fountain pen application. The various ink spots on the pages of this ledger suggests that when the office worker scribed they used the nib and the owner used the fountain pen. It was not until the mid 1950s that ball point pens were discovered and used in rural areas. The owner of this rural general store was more interested in recording transactions, be it in ink or pencil than the aesthetics of a neat and tidy document. Even though in this era, the principle of neat and tidiness was instilled in workers, this was overlooked and fell away through the economics of employing one staff member to do a variety of tasks for which they may not have had the proper training. It was in the early 1900s that the rural areas such as the Kiewa Valley "had to do" with local employees who had basic training but knew their customers very well and were very respectful of age and the mores of the trading public. The respect by shop owners and staff towards their customers was greater in small rural townships and villages within the Kiewa Valley than in the larger towns and cities. Their was no rushing to get the groceries or to spend the least amount of time within the shop. The social interactions where mixed with commercial activities at a very personalised level of one on one. This closeness gave the customer the confidence that those in the commercial transactions in the shop, where looking after them. This ledger is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it lists the personal transactions of local businesses, farmers, graziers and miners. Larger accounts and other businesses had one or more pages set aside for their transactions. The words are in large freehand (Capitals 5 mm high) possibly to be read by those with poorer eyesight. The relative long distance to travel for reading glasses or specialised optometrist was overcome by writing in larger fonts. The time taken to register produce or other consumables was not critical during the period when this ledger was in use because the local population was not at the critical level where the demand was not as intense as later on when periods of tourist influx became more demanding. The lay back and relaxed attitude of the local population during this period (early 1900s) was not intense and impersonal as within the larger city shopping and commercial environment. The ability of the shop keepers to interact with their customers not only in the commercial sense but also in a social atmosphere permitted the long hand scribbling of purchases without causing any offence.This item is a cloth and suede leather covered ledger.The spine is suede leather with a red stamped "LEDGER" title. The cover is covered with a dark blue cloth and shows a faded unrecognisable pattern. Each page has light blue lines running horizontal and 90 mm apart. Each page has, from the second line going horizontal two fine 1 mm apart red line. Each page is divided horizontally by single vertical line (except for the two double lines in the centre of the page). The first division separates the month from the day.Next to these lines is an area for the description of the item being purchased. Within the central double lines are vertical lines separating the type of tender paid, i.e., pounds, shillings and pence. The last section of the page has various comments, as required by the scribe.Each page is approximately 160 g/ms. The ledger has 698 pages drawn up on both sides and page numbers of 5 mm in height. In 1910, Portland Knitting Company began in downtown Portland, Oregon, with a few hand-knitting machines above a tiny retail store. Little did founders Carl Jantzen, Roy and John Zehntbauer know that they would achieve both fame and controversy as swimwear pioneers. Producing a wool suit for a rowing team they began offering "bathing suits" in their catalog. Knit on sweater cuff machines, the suits became popular with swimmers. The demand increased for those "Jantzens" and the company name was changed in 1918 to Jantzen Knitting Mills. The suits were made of 100% pure virgin wool. Matching stockings and stocking cap completed the costume of the day. Early advertisements guaranteed the famous rib-stitch "gives that wonderful fit". c1930 Jantzen catalogs featured upcoming movie stars, including Loretta Young, Joan Blondell, Ginger Rogers, and Dick Powell. The item is a kerosene marine ships lamp used onboard ships and smaller vessels for general lighting and navigation the subject lamp was made by a very well known maker R C Murray of Glasgow Scotland. During the research several different addresses were found but nothing on the founder or company history. It appears RC Murray made not only marine lamps but lamps for the railways as well. The company is listed in the Scottish Post Office Directories for 1885 to 1886 as manufacturing tinsmiths, lamp makers, coppersmiths, gas fitters, bell hangers and workers in sheet iron, zinc and brass at street numbers 7, 9 and 11 Carlton Court, Bridge St Glasgow. An additional address is at 37 Cavendish St Glasgow listed for 1910, and also at Pollokshaws Road. The writer assumes the company must have moved sometime between 1886 & 1910 to these addresses. A Map drawn in 1852 that shows the 5,120 acres that formed Dendy's Special Survey of 1841. In 1840 Henry Dendy, a farmer in Surrey, England acquired a "Special Survey" from the Commissioners for Land and Emigration which gave Dendy the right to choose land in Port Phillip for the "bargain basement" price of only £1 per acre for 5120 acres, (an area of 8 square miles). The Special Survey also included the right to "the shipment of a worker for every £20 spent on land, whose free passage was paid by the Crown, equalling a total of 100 workers ". Accordingly Dendy sold his English holdings and paid the required £5120 and arrived in Melbourne in February 1841. However by this time land in the new colony was selling for £5 - £40 per acre. Because Henry Dendy possessed the order from the Colonial Office in London he was able to successfully oppose Governor LaTrobe's attempts to alter the price of the land. Dendy appointed Jonathan Were, (an entrepreneur, who had arrived in 1839), as his Manager and who later became a partner. Together, Dendy and Were decided on an area 5 miles south from Melbourne, bounded by North Road, East Boundary Road, South Road and to the west by Port Phillip Bay. Were and Dendy pitched their tents in the area now known as ' Park St, Brighton' and sank a well near the corner of 'St Andrew's St and Wells St'. By 1845 J.B Were and Company had bought almost half of Dendy's land and Were built himself "Moorabbin House" in Were St Brighton made from stone, quarried from local cliffs. It was still standing in 1924. Legend records Moorabbin is named after the Aboriginal word for ' Mother's Milk ' The soil is very fertile and well supplied with water especially in the area called 'East Brighton' - now known as Bentleigh and East Bentleigh - By 1850 the area had developed with numerous market gardens, dairy farms, fruit gardens and vineyards supplying food for the growing population of Melbourne.This Map shows the birth of the Brighton and Moorabbin area. On 18th January1859 Brighton was proclaimed a Municipality and a Borough by October 1863. Meanwhile, following a Petition, the area of East and South Brighton, incorporating Mordialloc, Cheltenham, Mentone, Sandringham and Oakleigh separated from Brighton to form the Moorabbin District Roads Board becoming the first Local Government Authority. Col. William Mair was elected as the first Chairman of the Moorabbin Roads Board. Moorabbin Shire 1871 developed further and was declared a City in1934. An ink bottle was made of glass or ceramic and typically sat on a desk. The writer would dip the pen (or quill) into the bottle to put more ink on the pen. Because they sat on a desk, ink bottles were often decorative. 'Stephens' Ink' was invented by the British physician, Dr Henry Stephens (1796-1864), who in 1832 first developed his indelible "blue-black writing fluid" that became the basis of a successful manufacturing enterprise lasting over 130 years. Stephens' ink revolutionised office life in the latter half of the 19th century saving clerical workers much time previously spent mixing powdered inks and cleaning nibs. It was indelible and non-fading. After changes to the Australian import duties on inks, a local manufacturing works was established in the early 1930s by Stephens Inks (Australia) Ltd.We have mostly dispensed with ink bottles and quills. This item is an example of early stationery equipment commonly used in schools, households and commercial enterprises. A cylindrical brown glazed ceramic bottle with a pourer lip.
